SPI (serial peripheral interface)
Not standardized.
Supported by many devices such as A/D and D/A chips.
I2S (Inter-IC, Integrated Interchip Sound)
Used to interconnect audio devices together.
I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit)
Multi-master, low speed with addressability.
UART (Univeral asynchronous receive/transmit)
Dates from the 1920s. Has been somewhat updated.
Uses pre-agreed upon clock rate.
There are many, many more. Some are even “one-wire” and self clocking.
