What is Ames’
®
Liquid Granite
®
?
Ames’® Liquid Granite® is a strong, water-base, liquid acrylic plastic,
elastomeric coating fused with a multi-color blend of decorative chips.
It seals and protects by substantially increasing the strength of the
surface through adhesion. The resulting finish is a beautiful seamless
floor or wall with a semi-gloss 'granite-like' appearance that is
waterproof and slip-resistant. Both professional and DIY painters can
restore old and worn surfaces to better than new condition with Liquid
Granite.
Liquid Granite is a high performance architectural coating ideal for
floors, porches, patios, walkways, stairways, wheelchair ramps, decks,
roof decks, basement walls, and laundries. It has many other decorative
applications on concrete, metal and wood that is only limited by your
imagination.
Liquid Granite is a one-component, strong resurfacer which may be
applied to most any shape or contour using a trowel or squeegee. It has
excellent adhesion and bonds permanently to most types of sound
substrate including wood, concrete, metal, asphalt and fiberglass. Liquid
Granite fills small cracks and imperfections in floors and walls. It
penetrates, seals, and reinforces concrete floors and helps restore
eroded concrete. It provides a waterproof, slip-resistant surface that is
extremely durable and easy to clean.
Liquid Granite is environmentally safe and user friendly. It dries rapidly
for minimal down time, is low odor, non-flammable and water clean-up.
It is chemical resistant and easy to clean.
Application Suggestions
Applying Liquid Granite is a creative process. Application rate and
method will vary depending upon the condition and type of surface.
Some surfaces may require priming with Ames’ Super Primer™, Super
Elasto-Barrier®, or Blue Max® Trowel Grade. For additional application
tips and suggestions, please visit our website: www.amesresearch.com.
Do-It-Yourself in 3 Easy Steps
1. Surface Preparation
Be sure that surfaces are clean and dry before the coating application.
Caulk all cracks greater than 1/8" wide with Blue Max Trowel Grade.
Install adequate drains to drain flat roofs. Shot blast concrete in severe
situations as needed. Always run a test patch first in an inconspicuous
area. This is to ensure that there is proper adhesion and drying, and that
the product performs to your satisfaction. Check our website at
www.amesresearch.com for the latest updates before proceeding with
the application.
2. Seam Tape Cracks, Joints and Seams
Surfaces with joints, cracks, flashings, vents, parapet wall flashings or
where two unlike surfaces come together require seam tape. We
recommend Ames' Peel & Stick™ Seam Tape (PS250, PS450 or PS650)
to provide some additional strength and reinforcement on these
surfaces. Prime all surfaces generously with Super Elasto-Barrier
prior to setting the Seam Tape in place. (See Seam Tape label for
instructions.) Apply a liberal topcoat of Super Elasto-Barrier over the
Seam Tape and allow to cure. Smooth concrete surfaces may need to
be primed with Super Primer for better adhesion. Some surfaces may
require priming with both Super Primer and Super Elasto-Barrier.
3. Topcoat with Liquid Granite
Apply Liquid Granite to the surface. We recommend 1 to 2 coats of
Liquid Granite as needed to properly seal the surface for a watertight
system. A trowel works best when applying Liquid Granite.
Horizontal / Flat Surface Application Suggestions
One may start applying Liquid Granite by pouring 1 to 2 quarts of the
product onto the surface to be coated. We recommend working in
small manageable increments as to let the applicator reach the whole
section being covered. This suggested area would be roughly 2 feet
wide by 6 feet long. Decrease this area if you are working in direct
sunlight on a warm day as the coating’s dry time will be faster. Spread
the Liquid Granite evenly with a 8" to 12" trowel. After a uniform coating
has been applied you can smooth out the surface with a large
cement/concrete trowel to give it a smooth finish. You may also
sprinkle a little water on the Liquid Granite or wet your trowel to help
aid in creating your smoother finish. Then just repeat this process until
the desired area is completed and let it cure. A second coat may be
required depending on application thickness and uniformity.
Vertical Surfaces Application Suggestions
Liquid Granite may be applied to a vertical surface using a large trowel
as you would apply stucco to a wall. Or you may use a drywall mud
taping knife. After a uniform coating has been applied you can smooth
it out with your trowel to give it a smooth finish. You can sprinkle a little
water on Liquid Granite or wet your trowel to help aid in creating your
smooth finish. Then just repeat this process until the desired area is
completed and let it cure. A second coat may be required depending
on application thickness and uniformity. Tip: apply a light initial coat to
provide “traction” for a second coat. This will help prevent “sag”.
Application Tools
Liquid Granite may require one or more of the following:
Coverage
Standard product coverage is approximately five gallon per 100 sq. feet
per coat. Rough surfaces may require additional coating. Most surfaces
will only require one coat. Second coat may be required in some
applications.
Wood Decks
Sand or wire brush any areas that have loose material or are dirty. Prime
as much of the wood surface as possible with Super Elasto-Barrier liquid
rubber primer and sealer. On new deck construction, when possible,
apply Super Elasto-Barrier to all surfaces, sides and ends of the wood
before constructing deck. Allow to dry. Topcoat with one or more coats
of Liquid Granite and allow proper drying between coats.
Plywood (Decks and Ramps)
Seam tape and seal all seams, joints, flashings or drip edges with Super
Elasto-Barrier and Seam Tape. Use outdoor, waterproof, 1/2-inch or
better plywood. Prime entire surface with one or more coats of Super
Elasto-Barrier and allow to dry. On new deck construction, apply Super
Elasto-Barrier to all surfaces, sides and ends of the board before
constructing deck. Ames’ Contouring Roof Fabric™ (CRF-250) is
generally used in roof deck applications. Topcoat with one or more
coats of Liquid Granite.
Concrete Surfaces
Concrete surfaces should be wire brushed or pressure washed to
remove any loose dirt or debris. Do not apply Liquid Granite over damp
or severely decomposing concrete. Repair the concrete and allow to
cure for up to 30 days prior to application of Liquid Granite. Concrete
should be approximately 6 inches above ground water. Apply Super
Primer on areas with heavy use and in commercial applications.
Topcoat with one or more coats of Liquid Granite. Areas where standing
water may occur may require annual maintenance or cleaning.
Some surfaces may require maintenance because of potentially severe
weather conditions or excessive wear and tear. Other surfaces may
require priming with Super Elasto-Barrier. For roof deck applications see
our roof deck specifications.
Cleanup, Storage & Disposal
Clean tools and small spills with water. Store
unused product in its original can, tightly
sealed and protected from freezing. Dispose
of this product in accordance with local, state,
or federal requirements.
Weather & Drying Guidelines
For exterior applications Liquid Granite is best applied between 50
to 90 degrees F (10 to 32 degrees C) on warm dry surfaces. Be sure
humidity is less than 50% and dew point and temperature have a
good spread. Liquid Granite will begin to dry in 30 minutes to 2
hours depending upon thickness of application and weather. It
continues to cure for up to 2 weeks. Liquid Granite may be recoated
when it is dry to the touch.
IMPORTANT: For exterior applications check your local weather
forecast and follow our Ames’ Weather Rule: apply when the streets
are dry, the sun is in the sky, and no inclement weather is forecast for
24 hours. The best work window during winter months is usually
between 10 am and 2 pm. Low temperatures, high humidity and
evening and morning dew will require increased drying/curing time.
