Surface Preparation
Remove all loose paint, dirt, oil and grease leaving the surface clean and dry. All
major cracks, joints and seams smaller than 1/2" should be filled with Blue Max
Trowel-Grade. Do not use any silicone caulking materials. Make sure the surface is
as smooth as possible, before applying Peel & Stick Seam Tape.
Roof Fabric Application with Contouring Roof Fabric
After the seam tape has been primed the next step is
to prime the whole surface with Elasto-Barrier until
you have a smooth surface. Once cured you are now
ready to embed the roof fabric for long term
strengthening of the properly drained roof surface.
Contouring Roof Fabric (CRF250) is 42 inches wide by
75 feet long. It is a flexible polyester with the
appearance of fiberglass cloth, which reinforces, adds
strength, prevents splitting and reduces movement
of the surface. Lap lines are printed onto the fabric to
help guide consistent overlapping to make your
surface water tight. Overlap the Contouring Roof Fabric from bottom to top, as
you would apply shingles. One may butt the rolls of roof fabric together (not
recommended). If you choose to overlap there may be a minimal seam
depending on the desired final topcoat application. Do not use roofing fabric on
gravel roofs.
Step One: After you have prepped the surface
smooth with one to two coats of Elasto-Barrier you
are now ready to embed the Contouring Roof Fabric.
Starting at one end, pour out a liberal amount (about
one gallon to start) onto the roof surface of
Elasto-Barrier. Work in manageable increments
suitable for your working conditions until you are
comfortable increasing the amount of area to be
coated. Using a roller or push broom, spread the
coating out in a path slightly wider than the roll of
roof fabric. Next unroll the roof fabric over the wet
coating path by hand or use your roller/push broom. Once the roof fabric has
covered the wet coating, use your roller/broom to press the fabric into the wet
coating. Smooth out any folds or wrinkles, while spreading any excess coating that
comes up through the fabric onto the fabric. The fabric will absorb a large amount
of the coating during this application. Cut any excess fabric with a utility knife or
scissors to use on the next path.
Step Two: For the next path of roof fabric repeat
step one by pouring out more Elasto-Barrier. To help
guide for even application, use the 2 inch lap lines on
the roll of fabric. Overlap continuously for a
watertight application, including the start of a new
roll. Repeat this process until the entire surface is
completely covered with fabric. Allow the embedded
fabric layer to completely dry for a minimum of 24
hours for the best results depending on weather
conditions.
Step Three: To complete the roof fabric application
process, apply an additional coat of Elasto-Barrier on
top of the fabric layer, filling in any remaining pinhole
openings. The goal here is to have the roofing fabric
completely encapsulated with all pinholes filled and
have a final thickness of 30 mils of coating (about the
thickness of a dime). Use all the remaining coating to
complete the process of three gallons per 100 square
feet of roofing surface. Apply an Ames’ premium
topcoat product when dry (See Ames’ topcoat
products application instructions).
Weather & Drying Guidelines
Elasto-Barrier is best applied between 50˚ to 90˚F (10˚ to 32˚C) with less than 50%
humidity on warm, dry surfaces. For exterior applications always
follow the Ames Weather Rule: Apply when the surface is warm to the touch, the
sun is in the sky, the streets are dry, and no inclement weather is forecast for 24
hours. Allow two to eight hours to dry between coats depending on weather
conditions. For the best result, we recommend a minimum of 24 hours between
coats. Low temperatures, high humidity, evening, and morning dew may require
increase drying/curing time. During hot summer months, the coated surface may
have a slight tack until top coated. Allow for adequate drying and curing time.
Ames Research Laboratories is not responsible for any wash off that may occur
due to inclement weather.
Estimated Coverage
Standard coverage rate for Elasto-Barrier is 1 gallon per 100
sq. ft. per coat. Rough or unsmooth surfaces may require
additional coats. For the best results, it is suggested that a
minimum of 5 combined coats be applied. Three coats of
undercoat/primer with two coats of topcoat. More coats
equals longer life.

What is Elasto-Barrier
Elasto-Barrier is a waterborne, liquid, dual-rubber undercoat sealer used
primarily on roof and deck waterproofing applications. This highly elastomeric
coating is specially developed to work as an undercoat or primer for many of
Ames protective and decorative specialized topcoat products. When used
together this dual-rubber technology is specially formulated; to help renew,
reconstruct, revitalize, and extend the life of properly drained roofs and decks. As
a liquid, it flows into cracks and crevices and sets up as a tough durable rubber
to seal leaks, wherever they occur. Easily applied by simply pouring out onto the
surface and spreading with a brush or roller. For larger applications,
Elasto-Barrier is sprayable with a commercial airless sprayer. It cleans up easily
with water, because it is a water based product. Elasto-Barrier stretches up to
1000%, expands, and contracts to resist cracking and peeling. It has excellent
bonding to torchdown, corrugated metal, weathered EPDM*, built up tar roofs,
rolled roofing, RV's, mobile homes, tar and gravel roofs, rusty metal, walls,
gutters, roof decks and so much more. Ames’ products are especially effective in
saving old tar roof systems and significantly outperforming asphalt emulsion
roofs 10 to 1. Elasto-Barrier is low VOC, environmentally friendly and can be used
with potable water applications.
Where to use
Used for both properly drained commercial and residential applications. Metal
roof applications include: Corrugated Metal, Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings,
Rusty Metal, Tin, Aluminum, Standing Seam, and R Panel. Properly drained Flat
Roofs and Roof Decks including: Tar Roofs, Fiberglass*, Concrete, Modified
Bitumen, Rolled Roofing, Plywood, Weathered EPDM*, TPO*, Foam*, and Vinyl*.
Roofing components including: Vents, Skylights, Flashing and Chimneys*. On
roofs that collect ponding water the National Roofing Contractors Association
considers ponding water on any type of roof unacceptable. See the NRCA
roofing and water proofing manual. *Requires Super Primer*
Preparation
Read all labels and instructions before beginning. Surface has to be in savable
condition, clean and dry with proper drainage. To clean, pressure wash, if
possible, with pure water only. Do not use any soaps or detergents to clean the
surface. On hard to clean metal surfaces, vinegar may be used with scrubbing
and then rinse with fresh water. Be sure the surface is clean and completely dry
before the application of the coating.
Always run a test patch first in an inconspicuous area to ensure that proper
adhesion and drying occurs. Make sure that the product performs to your
satisfaction. Check our website at www.amesresearch.com for the latest updates
before proceeding with the application. All instructions are suggestions only and
not guidelines due to all applications are unique and beyond our control. The
user must test the surface to determine the suitability of the Ames’ product and
the surface to be coated. The user accepts that responsibility with their purchase.
The Problem
Why do roofs leak? Tremendous expansion and contraction caused by extreme
temperature fluctuations, wind, storm damage, ice, snow and UV rays from the
sun all take their toll on roofing materials. These conditions break down roofing
materials over time causing leaks. Old oil based roofing systems, including hot
tar, rolled roofing, shingle, composite and asphalt are susceptible to failure due
to these conditions. Ames’ products can help change all that.
The Solution
Elasto-Barrier undercoat will literally glue the surface back together. This liquid
elastomeric coating will expand and contract with the roof, making a water tight
membrane that seals and stops leaks. Top coating with Maximum-Stretch, Ames‘
Iron Coat or Snow Seal will form an impenetrable seal which reflects up to 98%
of the sun's harmful UV rays. Reflective coatings will extend the life of the roof by
reducing heat transfer into the building. A cooler roof surface will resist cracking,
peeling and drastically save on energy cost during those hot summer months.
Ames’ new technologies have surpassed other elastomeric coatings with the
advantages of better adhesion, durability and lifespan. On new construction all
wood and plywood can be coated on all sides prior to installation.
General Application
Pour the coating out and spread liberally with a roller, paint brush, or soft-bristle
push broom. Work the product until it is smooth and has is uniform thickness.
Once a film starts to form move on so the product does not skin over which can
create an unintended texture in the coating's finished appearance. The dark grey
color undercoat will dry quickly on a hot day with direct sunlight. Only re-coat
after the first coat is fully dry. Drying time depends on the thickness of
application and weather conditions. In most instances, the minimum application
is two primer coats with a rate of one gallon, per 100 square feet, per coat. One
to two topcoats are required.
Application Tools. You may need one or more of the following:
For large commercial jobs, 275 gallon totes and 55 gallon drums are available by
special order. For assistance with special order items, call 1-888-345-0809 or
email productservices@amesresearch.com. Commercial sprayer specifications
are located on our website at www.amesresearch.com.
Step One: Remove all loose dirt, gravel, moss and debris from the roof surface,
carefully pressure wash and let completely dry.
Step Two: Apply seam tape where needed (See seam taping instructions). Prime
liberally with two to three coats of Elasto-Barrier until the roof surface is smooth
and sealed. Weathered EPDM roofs, first prime with Super Primer prior to
applying Elasto-Barrier. Roof must be completely smooth and sealed prior to
installing Contouring Roof Fabric (See Roof Fabric Applications).
Step Three: Topcoat with one to two coats of Maximum-Stretch, Ames’ Iron
Coat or Snow Seal as needed to complete the application. The minimum
application is five gallons per 100 square feet. For additional and further
specifications, visit www.amesresearch.com.
Seam Taping with Peel & Stick Seam Tape
Hot or cold temperature changes causes roofs, walls or decks to expand and
contract. Over time, cracks and leaks can develop. Seam taping provides
reinforcement over areas prone to splitting, such as seams or joints and creates
a "bridge" that ties the surfaces together so water can't seep through. All surfaces
with joints, cracks, flashings, roof vents or where two unlike surfaces come
together should be seam taped. Use seam tape over edges and shape it to fill
corners, then depending on application, coat liberally with Elasto- Barrier. Peel &
Stick Seam Tape comes in a variety of widths and lengths to meet your projects
needs including: PS250: 2"X50'; PS450: 4"X50'; and PS650: 6"X50'.
