Appendix C – Replacing I/O Boards
This appendix covers the procedure to replace or add an Input/Output (I/O) board in an Optima SD
enclosure.
The number of input and output signals an enclosure can switch is determined by the number and type of
connectors on each board and by the number of boards. An Optima SD 3 RU enclosure holds two or
three double boards. An I/O board can be replaced or an I/O board can be added to an enclosure with an
empty board slot to expand a system’s capabilities.
Expansion boards (e.g., APWeb) can also be added to an enclosure. For installation instructions for an
expansion board, see the chapter for the specific board.
Important: Replacing or adding boards should only be done by personnel trained to handle ESD
sensitive parts and assemblies.
Items Required
I/O board
Phillips #1 screwdriver
ESD wristband and cord with alligator clip
Configuration Requirements
When a board is replaced with the same type of board, the configuration file does not need to
be updated.
When a new board is added to a previously empty board slot, the configuration file must be
updated. A CD has been included with an updated configuration file, which must be uploaded
to the system (see page 74) for the new board to work.
ESD Warning: To avoid ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) damage to sensitive components, make sure
you are properly grounded before touching any internal Optima SD materials. Use an ESD
wristband and cord with alligator clip attached to a good ground source.
Before starting:
Unplug the power cord on the rear of the enclosure.
Label and disconnect all cables (including the link cable between enclosures).
If the enclosure is in a rack, remove it and place on the work surface.
