22.4 A motor shall be acceptable for the particular
application, and shall be capable of handling the
maximum normal load of the appliance without
resulting in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to
persons.

22.5 A motor winding shall resist the absorption of
moisture as evaluated by the Humidity
Conditioning Test, Section 53.

22.6 With reference to 22.5, film-coated wire and wire
employing cotton over film coating are not required
to be additionally treated to prevent absorption of
moisture in an appliance not intended to be
exposed to the weather – see 48.3.1 – 48.3.3. A
treatment of the winding is required when the
appliance is to comply with the requirements in
48.1.1, 48.1.2, and 48.3.1 – 48.3.3.

22.7 A brush holder assembly shall be constructed so
that when a brush is worn out – no longer capable
of performing its function – the brush, spring, and
other part of the assembly is retained to the degree
which does not result in:
a)An accessible dead-metal part becoming
energized; and
b)A live part becoming accessible.

22.8 Motors for use in unattended areas shall be tested
in accordance with Section 178, General, and
Section 179Ai, Performance.
