Add media to a project
Add media to a project overview
After you create a project, you typically import media les to create a composition. All media
types—movie clips, still images, and audio les appearing in the File Browser, or other media
items appearing in the Motion Library—are added to your project using the same methods. To
learn about the File Browser, where you access les on your disks, see File Browser overview on
page 30. To learn about the Library, where you nd the content built into Motion, see Library
overview on page 35.
Note: Layered Photoshop les have additional import options available from the drop menu. See
Layered Photoshop les on page 170.
Add and remove les
You can add media les to a project using the File Browser or the Import command in the File
menu. In most cases, the File Browser is more convenient and gives you more control over
how the resulting objects appear in the project. You can add les to a project individually or
in groups.
Note: Although you can add iTunes and iPhoto les via the File Browser, it’s better to add them
via the Music and Photo categories in the Motion Library. When you add iTunes and iPhoto les
via the Library, you can browse for les using the playlist or photo album features available in
iTunes and iPhoto. For more information, see Add iTunes and iPhoto les from the Library on
page 183.
Add media les to a new group
1 If the Create Layers At setting in the Project pane of Motion Preferences is set to “Current frame,”
move the playhead to the frame in the Timeline where you want the rst frame of the le
to start.
Note: If the Create Layers At setting is set to “Start of project,” this step is unnecessary because
imported les are placed at frame 1.
2 Select media les in the File Browser.
3 Do one of the following:
Make sure no group is selected, then drag the les into the Canvas, placing them at
any position.
Make sure no group is selected, then click the Import button to add the les to the center of
the Canvas.
Drag the les into the empty lower area of the Layers list.
