Op tion al Wint er Pump Ca re
You can safely run your waterfall over the entire winter, with
certain precautions being taken, or you can shut it down
and use the pump to maintain the opening we mentioned
previously. Leaving the pump running throughout the winter
can create outstanding ice sculptures along the stream and
waterfall. Take caution, though, in the build-up of ice, which
may cause water to channel out of the pond. If this happens,
we recommend that you shut down and disconnect the pump
and store it for the remainder of the extreme cold season. To
protect your pump, store it in a frost-free area and submerged
in a bucket of water to keep the seals lubricated. It should
be ready to go in the spring. Remember, if you do leave your
waterfall running, evaporation will still happen, so you will still
need to add water to your pond, even in the winter months.

If you can grow crabgrass and dandelions successfully,
then you can grow aquatic plants too. Growing aquatic
plants is so simple there’s only one thing to remember
… green side up and brown side down. In other words,
the foliage end of the plant points up towards the sky,
while the roots go down into the soil or gravel substrate.
Growing beautiful plants is that easy and only requires
the following:

Full sun (some will tolerate shade)
•

Aquatic plants are not only beautiful to behold, but
they provide a necessary function in maintaining a
healthy ecosystem in the water garden. They remove

algae. They also provide shade, food, and protection for
