Accelerometer The ARCHOS is equipped with an accelerometer which allows the screen to automatically switch its orientation when you rotate the device. When the device turns on, wait for the ARCHOS and Android™ logos to appear. • While the ARCHOS is on, holding down on the Power button will display a window with a list of options: - airplane mode: cuts the WiFi and Bluetooth connections. - buttons mode: buttons will appear on the right side of the screen.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 Introduction > P. Home Screen 1. These are the default Android™ shortcuts (Web “Browser”, “EMail”, “Contacts”, etc.). Tap on an icon to open the corresponding application. You can customize the Home screen by adding/removing shortcuts and widgets, changing the wallpaper, etc. 2. Applications Tab: Tap on this icon to reveal all the Android™ applications installed on your ARCHOS (games, various tools, etc.). You can copy them onto the Home screen by pressing and holding on their icons.

Tap on “Wallpaper” then choose from the list. Changing the Settings From the Home screen, tap on the Menu icon , tap on “Settings” and choose a category: “Wireless Controls”, “Sound & Display”, “Date & Time”, etc. For more information on the different settings, see: Main Settings. using the touchscreen Your ARCHOS is equipped with a touchscreen.

Do not subject it to heat, keep it ventilated (especially when connected to a computer). Keep it away from water and excessively humid areas. Keep it away from high electromagnetic fields. Do not open it up. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Opening will void your warranty.
MANUAL V2.0 |5 Using the File Browser > P. 10 Using the file Browser The ARCHOS File Browser gives you the possibility to navigate the file system of your ARCHOS internal memory. In the Home screen, tap on the applications tab, on the right side of the screen, and tap on “File manager” to enter the File Browser. You will see two panels: • The one on the left is the panel that you usually use to navigate through your device’s internal memory.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 Using the File Browser > P. 11 FILE Browser Menu Items Note that some of the above menu items may not appear if they are not available for the highlighted file or folder. “Info” - displays a message box with information about the highlighted file. “Select mode” - activates the selection mode, which allows you to select the folders and files you want to copy, move or delete, by just checking their corresponding boxes (which appear on the left of the folders/files).

|5 Making a WiFi Connection > P. 13 MANUAL V2.0 Making a WiFi Connection When you do not need the WiFi or Bluetooth connections, remember to deactivate them in order to save battery power. First of all, you need to configure a WiFi network. For this procedure to work, you need to be in a WiFi zone that will allow you to connect to it. Every time the ARCHOS is in range of a network that you have already configured once, it will attempt to make a connection.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 Making a WiFi Connection > P. 14 • When the WiFi is enabled, the ARCHOS will connect automatically to your configured networks when they are in range. • If the ARCHOS finds a network that has never been configured, it will display a notification icon in the top left corner of the interface. Drag the top bar downwards to reveal the notification message and tap on it to view available WiFi networks.

You can also access the web browser by tapping on the applications tab, on the right side of the screen.

Enter the address with the virtual keyboard. Select “Go” to open the website in the current window. “Bookmarks” - will open the “Bookmarks” manager. You will see three tabs: “Bookmarks”, “Most visited”, and “History”. - “Bookmarks”: Here you can see your list of bookmarks. Just tap on one of them to open it in the current window.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 The Internet Features > P. 17 • For this to work, you will need a WiFi connection and Windows Media® Player 11 or higher installed on your PC*. • This is especially useful when you have a large library of music and video and you cannot fit it all onto the internal memory of the ARCHOS. • The ARCHOS uses the UPnP (Universal Plug-and-play) standard to stream shared media files from your PC’s Windows Media® Library.

The ARCHOS icon should appear in the window, with a warning symbol next to it*. * ATTENTION: the first time you set your sharing options, it might take a couple of minutes for your PC to display the ARCHOS icon. 5. Select the ARCHOS icon and click on the Allow button. 6. To modify your sharing settings, click on Settings. You can, for example, enter a name for your shared media files.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 The Internet Features > P. 19 Browsing OTHER COMPUTERS ON the Network • When you are connected to a Windows® network, you can browse* the shared folders of other computers in the network, using the ARCHOS File Browser. • Connect the ARCHOS to your WiFi network (see Making a WiFi Connection). • In the Home screen, tap on the applications tab, on the right side of the screen, and tap on “File Manager” to enter the File Browser.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 The Internet Features > P. 20 watching web tv In order to be able to watch numerous Internet TV channels, directly on your ARCHOS, you will need to register your device. 1. First connect to a WiFi network*. 2. From the Home Screen, tap on “Media Club”, then choose “Web TV”. 3. The “Web TV” interface is organized by category, such as “Location”, “Genre”, “Favorites”, etc. Browse the categories to find the channel you want to watch.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 PLAYING VIDEO > P. 21 Playing Video From the Home screen, tap on the “Video” icon, then select “Internal Storage” to display all the videos and folders stored in your device’s Video folder. You can resume the last-played video file, if it was interrupted before the end. BROWSING THROUGH YOUR VIDEOS • The “Video” browser allows you to navigate through the Video folder of the ARCHOS internal memory. • You can go back one level in the interface by tapping on the Back icon .

A confirmation screen will pop up. “Create Bookmark” - creates a shortcut (on the Home screen, in the “Video” menu) to the highlighted video. “Bookmark” - “Resume”: will resume playing the highlighted video from the bookmark. - “Clear”: will remove the bookmark from the highlighted video file. “Bookmark” only appears in the menu when a bookmarked video file is highlighted.

Only one bookmark per file is allowed. - to resume playing a video from a bookmark, go to the Home screen, in the “Video” menu, and you will see your bookmarked video. You can also go to the “Video” browser and highlight the bookmarked video file. Select the “Bookmark” menu item, then choose “Resume” (“Clear” will remove the bookmark from the video).

This will be repeated indefinitely. “Shuffle” - plays all the videos of the current folder randomly.

Creating Compatible Video Files with Your Computer If some of your videos don’t play on your ARCHOS, you may need to convert them to a compatible format: • The easiest way to do this is by using Windows Media® Player 11 or higher to transfer videos to your ARCHOS.

This allows you to browse your internal memory, view your photos or surf the Web while listening to music. You will be able to access the music playback screen directly from the notification area. To stop the song, tap on pause in the music playback screen and then tap on Home.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 PLAYING MUSIC > P. 31 “PlayMode”, “Repeat & Shuffle” - the following table explains how the audio player will work according to the settings you chose in “PlayMode” AND “Repeat & Shuffle”. - An icon shows the current modes in the Music playback screen. “PlayMode” “Repeat & Shuffle” “Single” “Normal” - plays the current song and then stops. “Repeat” - plays the current song repeatedly. “Normal” - plays all the songs of the current folder one after the other, and then stops.

This is your queued track, which will be played after the current track. - you can only queue one track at a time. - plays the first few seconds of each track. You can define the length to play in “Intro duration”.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 PLAYING MUSIC > P. 33 Playlists • A playlist is a list of audio tracks that the music player will automatically play one after the other. • On your ARCHOS, you can play, create and edit as many playlists as you want. Note: when you delete a playlist, you are only deleting the list and not the music itself. Playing a Playlist • In the Music Library, highlight the “Playlist” line and open it. • Highlight a playlist and open it.

Highlight the track you want to move, select the “Track” menu item, then choose “Move”. Now highlight the position to which you want to move the track and validate. “Playlist” - “Clear”: clears the current playlist. - “Shuffle”: randomly shuffles the order of the songs in the current playlist. “Save playlist” - “Save”: saves the current playlist to the Playlists folder.

You can now add, shuffle, move or remove tracks within the playlist, using the appropriate menu items. The available menu items will vary according to which panel you selected (see: Playlist Menu Items). 4. After you have made the changes you want, select the “Save playlist” menu item and choose “Save” to save the playlist.

Photo Viewer To view a picture, highlight the corresponding thumbnail and open it.

|5 MANUAL V2.0 VIEWING PHOTOS > P. 40 Photo Viewer SETTINGS • In the Photo mode, you can access the Photo viewer settings screen via the “Settings” menu item. • Use the left/right arrows to select a different setting for a parameter. “Picture Pause” - defines the time that each picture will be displayed during a slideshow. “Transition” - defines the transition effect to be used between two pictures. There are several cool effects that you can choose from.

Windows Media® Player: copy your pictures using Windows Media® Player 11 or higher: Use Windows Media® Player 11 or higher (Sync tab) to synchronize your computer’s pictures to the ARCHOS. See Putting Files onto the archos for more details. 2.

Connecting the archos to a computer 1. Connect the supplied USB cable to the ARCHOS. 2. Plug the USB end of the cable into your computer. 3. The ARCHOS will turn on and ask you if you want to connect it or not. Choose to connect it.

Copy your media files (videos, music, photos) with Windows Media® Player 11 or higher: The Synchronize button in Windows Media® Player is a one way ‘sync’ button. It will add video, music and photo files to your ARCHOS. It will give you the possibility to have the same digital media on your ARCHOS as you have in your Windows Media® Player media library. 1.

Tap on it to reveal the list of sub-parameters. • When a check box appears on the right of a parameter, tap on it to enable or disable this option.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 main settings > P. 45 “Bluetooth” - tap on this line to enable or disable the Bluetooth connection. “Bluetooth settings” - allows you to set up your device’s name (the name that will appear on your different Bluetooth devices), make it discoverable or hidden, scan for Bluetooth devices in range, etc. - The list of Bluetooth devices in range will appear at the bottom of the “Bluetooth settings” screen, so that you can pair and connect them to the ARCHOS.

If this does not work or if you cannot access the touchscreen settings, you can force the touchscreen calibration (see: System Recovery).
|5 MANUAL V2.0 main settings > P. 47 “TV Format” - choose between the “NTSC (USA)” and “PAL (Europe)” systems (select the one that is compatible with your country’s television system). - choose between “4/3”, “16/9” or “Wide screen” - the format used by your television set to display images. - if you choose the “HDMI” TV connection mode, the following parameters will appear: “VGA 4/3 (640x480 60Hz)”, “480p 16/9 (720x480 60Hz)”, “576p 16/9 (720x576 50Hz)” or “720p 16/9 (1280x720 60Hz)”.
|5 MANUAL V2.0 main settings > P. 48 “Format internal storage” - formats the internal memory (erase all data, media files, and licenses) “System storage” “Available space” - displays the amount of free space available on the system memory (the memory used to store the Android™ applications). “Factory data reset” - erases all data on the device. Your device will be reset to its factory configuration.

For this to work, you only need a connection to a WiFi network. See Making a WiFi Connection. 1. From to the Home screen, tap on the Menu icon , select “Settings”, and choose “About device”. 2. Tap on the “Firmware update” button. 3. The ARCHOS will search on-line for a new firmware.

TV Snap-on Digital TV receiver which allows you to watch and record digital TV (DVB-T) directly on your ARCHOS. Car Mount Allows you to mount your ARCHOS on your windshield in order to use it as a car GPS. Your product features a built-in GPS receiver. |5 MANUAL V2.0 troubleshooting > P. 53 troubleshooting resetting your ARCHOS • In the event that your ARCHOS freezes operation, you can force the device to shut down by holding the Power button for 15 seconds. • Only if the Power button does not reset your device, then should you use the “pinhole reset” button, located on the back the device, next to the USB port, or at the bottom of the product, on the left side (depending on which model you have).
|5 MANUAL V2.0 troubleshooting > P. 54 “Format Disk” - formats the internal memory. - all data (music, photos, videos, etc.), licenses and settings are erased. “Check Disk” - checks the internal memory and attempts to fix errors, if any. - does not erase any data. “Force Touchscreen Calibration” - use this option if the touchscreen does not respond correctly and if you cannot access the touchscreen settings (see: Touchscreen Problems). - follow the instructions on the screen.
