Checking Lines for HF Signals starting the ARGUS w/ wrong mode of operation starting the ARGUS w/ correct mode of operation no active data service detected on the line active data service detected on the line (might be ADSL) In order to check the lines for HF (high frequency) signals which might be resulting from active data services, the ARGUS 3uPLUS needs to be booted in POTS monitor mode. In order to do so, please follow the instructions on the left.

3. Testing ISDN Access Lines Placing Calls (ISDN S/T or U) different ISDN services S/T interface U interface To place a phone call now, simply press the handset key and follow the menu as outlined. Different telephone numbers and types of services can be selected. Confirming these a connection will be established. During a call the B channel used (B01), type of service (Telephony ISDN), and destination number are shown.
Answering Calls Calls on ISDN S/T and U Interfaces incoming call during the call call cleared by near end S/T interface call cleared by far end U interface When receiving a call either on the S/T or on the U interface, the ARGUS indicates this with the menus displayed on the left. The number of the caller will be displayed as well as the TON (type of number) and NP (numbering plan). Having ACCEPTed the incoming call, a conversation can be held. In the end one can press the CONT.
Entering the Number of the Access Line In order to be able to perform a self call, a bit error rate test, and others, the telephone number of the access line connected to needs to be entered. When operating in ISDN BRI S/T interface mode, the steps as outlined below need to be followed.
4. Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT) – BERT in Self Call pressing key (9) selection of service selection of B channel To perform a BERT (bit error rate test) enter the single test menu and choose BERT start. Use the cursor keys and select the own number in order to perform a self call. As with a regular phone call, after confirming the type of service (ISDN Telephony) and B channel (*), any channel), the BERT will be started. By default, the time for testing is 1 min and the bit pattern is 2^11.
Setting the Time of the BERT The default time for conducting a BERT is one minute. If an error occurred during this period the time needs to be increased to 15 minutes. and the test needs to be repeated. The BERT time can be set in the menu as outlined on the left side. Finally confirm the time set by pressing either the confirmation key or the right soft key.
5. Testing POTS Access Lines – Placing a Phone Call To be able to place a POTS phone call the interface needs to be switched from ISDN BRI to POTS. This can be done by entering the access menu and selecting POTS interface and POTS terminal subsequently. To place a POTS phone call now, simply press the handset key and follow the menu as outlined. The telephone number can be entered directly or can be called up from the phone book by pressing “MEM”.
Testing POTS Access Lines – Monitoring a Phone Call To place a POTS phone call now, simply press the handset key and follow the menu as outlined. The telephone number can be entered directly or can be called up from the memory by pressing NO.. When operating in the POTS monitor mode, the conversation on the line can be observed. The ARGUS displays the voltage (when "off hook"), the number of the caller (if CLIP is supported) and the DTMF characters dialed by both telephone subscriber.
6. 2-wire Copper Test (Measuring R/C) When starting the ARGUS 3uPLUS and operating it in the copper test modus, either the loop resistance or loop capacitance can be metered. To be able to do so, the line voltage needs to be 0.0 V.
7. Setting of Power Mode – Line Feeding The ARGUS 3uPLUS can be fed by batteries but also by the line power of the S/T bus interface. This ensures an increased operating time. To enable this feature, please follow the steps outlined on the left. In the end, confirm the selection “also retr.” and return to the main menu by pressing (escape soft key) multiple times. “also retr.
Battery Maintenance The submenu namely „accu servicing“ provides the user with battery maintenance features. They help to increase the life time of the rechargable batteries inside of the ARGUS. The batteries can be charged or discharged manually. Alternatively, the they can also be charged during the opertation, as one is used to with cell phones.
