About This User’s Manual You are reading the Disney Netpal User’s Manual. This User’s Manual provides information regarding the various components in the Disney Netpal and how to use them. The following are major sections of this User’ s Manual: 1. Knowing the Parts Provides information on the Disney Netpal’s components. 2. Safety Precautions The following safety precautions will increase the life of the Disney Netpal. Follow all precautions and instructions. Except as described in this manual, refer all servicing to qualified personnel. Disconnect the AC power before cleaning. Wipe the Disney Netpal using a clean cellulose sponge or chamois cloth dampened with a solution of nonabrasive detergent and a few drops of warm water and remove any extra moisture with a dry cloth. vi DO NOT place on uneven or unstable work surfaces.
SAFE TEMP: This Disney Netpal should only be used in environments with ambient temperatures between 5°C (41°F) and 35°C (95°F) INPUT RATING: Refer to the rating label on the bottom of the Disney Netpal and be sure that your power adapter complies with the rating. DO NOT carry or cover a Disney Netpal that is powered ON with any materials that will reduce air circulation such as a carrying bag. DO NOT use strong solvents such as thinners, benzene, or other chemicals on or near the surface.
Transportation Precautions To prepare the Disney Netpal for transport, you should close the display panel to protect the keyboard and display panel. For the model that comes with a hard disk drive, you should turn it OFF and disconnect all external peripherals to prevent damage to the connectors when you prepare for transport. The hard disk drive’s head retracts when the power is turned OFF to prevent scratching of the hard disk surface during transport. Never transport it while the power is still ON.

1 Microphone (Built-in) The built-in mono microphone can be used for skype, voice narrations, or simple audio recordings. 2 3 Built-in Camera Display Panel 4 Power Indicator The power indicator lights when the Disney Netpal is turned ON and blinks slowly when the Disney Netpal is in the Save-to-RAM (Suspend) mode. This indicator is OFF when the Disney Netpal is turned OFF.
Wireless/Bluetooth Indicator This is only applicable on models with built-in wireless LAN/Bluetooth. When the built-in wireless LAN/Bluetooth is enabled, this indicator lights. 5 Power Switch The power switch allows powering ON and OFF the Disney Netpal and recovering from Save-to-RAM (Suspend) mode. Press the switch once to turn ON and hold it to turn OFF the Disney Netpal. The power switch only works when the display panel is opened.
Bottom Side Refer to the diagram below to identify the components on this side of the Disney Netpal. The bottom side may vary in appearance depending on model. 1 2 3 The bottom of the Disney Netpal can get very hot. Be careful when handling the Disney Netpal while it is in operation or recently been in operation. High temperatures are normal during charging or operation. DO NOT use on soft surfaces such as beds or sofas, which may block the vents.
1-6 1 Memory (RAM) Compartment The memory compartment provides expansion capabilities for additional memory. Additional memory will increase application performance by decreasing disk drive access. The BIOS automatically detects the amount of memory in the system and configures accordingly. There is no hardware or software (including BIOS) setup required after the memory is installed. Visit an authorized service center or retailer for information on memory upgrades for your Disney Netpal.
Right Side Refer to the diagram below to identify the components on this side of the Disney Netpal. 1 1 2 3 4 5 Memory Card Slot The built-in memory card reader can read MMC/SD cards. 2 USB Port (2.0/1.1) The USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is compatible with USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 devices such as keyboards, pointing devices, cameras, and storage devices, connected in a series up to 12Mbits/sec (USB 1.1) and 480Mbits/sec (USB 2.0). Also, the USB supports hot-swapping function.
Left Side Refer to the diagram below to identify the components on this side of the Disney Netpal. 1 1 2 3 4 LAN Port The eight-pin RJ-45 LAN port (10/100M bit) supports a standard Ethernet cable for connection to a local network. The built-in connector allows convenient use without additional adapters. 2 1-8 USB Port (2.0/1.1) 3 Microphone Jack The microphone jack is designed to connect the microphone used for Skype, voice narrations, or simple audio recordings.

This indicator is OFF when the Disney Netpal is turned OFF. 2 Battery Charge Indicator The battery charge indicator (LED) shows the status of the battery’s power.
Keyboard Usage Special Function Keys The following defines the colored hot keys on the Disney Netpal’s keyboard. The colored commands can only be accessed by first pressing and holding the function key while pressing a key with a colored command. Some function icons appear in the Notification area after activation. The Hot Key locations on the function keys may vary depending on model but the functions should remain the same. Follow the icons whenever your hot key locations do not match the manual.
LCD/Monitor Icons (F8): Toggles between the Disney Netpal’s LCD display and an external monitor. Task Manager Icon (F9): Initiates the Task Manager to view the application process or terminates applications. Crossed Speaker Icon (F10): Mutes the speaker. Volume Down Icon (F11): Decreases speaker volume. Volume Up Icon (F12): Increases the speaker volume. Num Lk (Insert): Toggles the numeric keypad (number lock) ON and OFF. Allows use of a larger portion of the keyboard for number entering.

Powering on your Disney Netpal These are only quick instructions for using your Disney Netpal. 1. Connect the AC power adapter 2. Turn ON the Disney Netpal Damage may occur if you use a different adapter to power the Disney Netpal. You may damage both your battery pack(s) and the Disney Netpal with a faulty AC-DC adapter.
First-time Startup For the first time you start your Disney Netpal, the Windows wizard will launch automatically and lead you through setting up your preferences and some basic information. It allows you to configure how you want your child to use this Disney Netpal, including programs which they can and cannot use and a safe environment for your children when they go online. Enter your desired master password in the Password field and enter again in the Confirm Password field. Click OK to continue. • Password Reminder Question is optional. It functions to give you the correct password in case you forget yours.
2-8 10. Click CREATE NEW USER. 11. Enter a user name and a password for the account of your child and select a picture for the account. Click OK to continue. 12. Select from two options for users desktop environment. The first option Disney Desktop is recommended for kids, and it includes kid-friendly applications, parental controls and restrictions. The second option Standard Desktop allows users to access Windows. Click NEXT to continue.
13. Click a desired program in the All PROGRAMS field to add to the APPROVED PROGRAMS field. Click NEXT to continue. Click an unwanted program in the APPROVED PROGRAMS field and select Remove This Title to remove the program. You can add or remove programs to or from the approved list whenever you want to. 14. In the APPROVED PROGRAMS field, select the application that you want to restrict access to and tick the specific day and time that you would like to implement the application usage policy.
Disney Desktop Disney Desktop is a kid-friendly user interface that makes your Disney Netpal ready for playing games, learning and school.
All Programs You can add your favorite programs to the desktop or open the programs here. Personalize Desktop Theme Change the desktop theme you like. Gadgets Select the gadgets you would like to use and place them on the desktop. Trays Select your style of the desktop tray.
Files & Documents You can see all your files here. Sorting the files by Name, Size, Type and Changed makes you locate the desired files more easily. Or simply enter the file name in the search box and search it directly.. System Manager System Manager allows you to manage your Disney Netpal, and the programs running on it. It also displays the current system resources.
ASUS EeePC Tray Utility The preloaded ASUS EeePC Tray utility allows you to turn off some devices to minimize the power consumption and helps you adjust the display resolution easily. Enabling and Disabling Devices To disable or enable devices 1. Right-click the ASUS EeePC Tray Utility icon in the Notification area and the utility shows the available options: Disable WLAN: Turns on and off the wireless LAN connection. Disable Blue Tooth: Turns on and off the Bluetooth connection.
Adjusting the display resolution Click the ASUS EeePC Tray Utility icon in the Notification area to adjust the display resolution. Select the resolution based on your needs. The CRT-related options are unavailable when there is no connected external monitors. When you select LCD 1024 x 768, move the pointer to scroll up and down the screen. Scroll up to see the top of the screen. Scroll down to see the bottom of the screen. You need not scroll up and down the screen when you select LCD Compress Mode.
Network Connection Configuring a wireless network connection 1. Double-click the crossed wireless network icon Notification area. in the If the wireless connection icon does not show in the Notification area. Activate the wireless LAN function by pressing + ( + ) before configuring a wireless network connection. 2. Select the wireless access point you want to connect to from the list and click Connect to build the connection.
Local Area Network To establish a wired network, follow the instructions below: Using a dynamic IP: 2-16 1. Right-click the network icon with a yellow warning triangle on the Windows® taskbar and select Open Network Connections. 2. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties. 3. Click Internet Protocol 4. (TCP/IP) and click Properties. Click Obtain an IP address automatically and click OK.
Using a static IP: 1. 2 3. 4. 5. Repeat the step 1–3 of Using a dynamic IP to start the static IP network configuration. Click Use the following IP address. Enter the IP address, Subnet mask and Gateway from your service provider. If needed, enter the preferred DNS Server address and alternative address. After entering all the related values, click OK to build the network connection. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if you have problems connecting to the network.
Browsing web pages After you finish the network setup, click Internet Explorer on the desktop and start enjoying net surfing. Visit our Disney Netpal homepage (http://eeepc.asus.com) to obtain the latest information and register at http://vip.asus.com for full service of your Disney Netpal.

ASUS Update The ASUS Update is a utility that allows you to manage, save, and update the Disney Netpal BIOS in Windows® environment. The ASUS Update utility allows you to: • Save the current BIOS file • Download the latest BIOS file from the Internet • Update the BIOS from an updated BIOS file • Update the BIOS directly from the Internet, and • View the BIOS version information.

Super Hybrid Engine Super Hybrid Engine offers different power modes. The assigned instant key toggles power savings between various power saving modes. The power saving modes control many aspects of your Disney Netpal to maximize performance versus battery time. The selected mode is shown on the display. To change the power mode • Click Start > All Programs > ASUS > SuperHybridEngine > SuperHybridEngine. • Press Instant Key 3 repeatedly to switch power modes.

Disney Mix Central Disney Mix Central is a multi-media application that gives you access to music, pictures, and videos. You can also purchase and download content from the online media store. Follow the onscreen instructions to register or click Cancel to continue. The registration is voluntary. 4. The main control panel appears.
Viewing images Click the Camera icon on the top and browse your pictures. Watching videos Click the Video icon on the top to select videos to watch. Shopping online Click the Shopping bag icon on the top and start shopping online .
Disney Pix Disney Pix is a tool for you to editing your pictures. To launch Disney Pix 1. 2. 3. Double-click the Disney Pix 3.1 shortcut on the desktop. A Pix 3.1 Registration screen appears. Follow the onscreen instructions to register or click Cancel to continue. The registration is voluntary. 4. The main control panel appears. Drawing and editing pictures You can use the tools on the left to draw a picture directly on the blank sheet.
Browsing albums You can easily open and browse your albums. Creating Bobble Head videos and postcards You can put yourself, your friends, and your family into videos and postcards with fun special effects. Then share the fun.
Disney Theme Hyperdesk provides two sets of Disney themes and allows you to easily change your desktop and icons. Double-click Disney Theme to start to chage your Disney Netpal appearance. Applying Hypersuite 1. 2. 3. Click Hypertheme, Icon Set or Wallpaper to select a desired theme. Click the check mark button before each option to turn it off if you do not want to apply some specific theme. Click it again to turn it on. Click Apply Hypersuite to apply your selected theme.
Radio Disney Radio Disney offers you the coolest songs by Disney stars and interviews of your favorite stars 24 hours a day worldwide. Listening to Radio Disney 1. Double-click RadioDisney on the desktop. Ensure that your Disney Netpal has connected to the Internet. 2. The Radio Disney playback appears and connect to the Radio Disney automatically. You can see the information of the song playing at the time, including the title, artist, album, ect.. Move to adjust the volume Click to PLAY or PAUSE 3.
Last 10 Songs Click the LAST 10 SONGS tab to see the last ten songs playing on Radio Disney. Lyrics Click the LYRICS button to see the lyrics of the song playing on Radio Disney. Skins Click the SKINS tab to change the skin of the Radio Disney playback.
Support DVD information System Recovery 4 Support DVD & System Recovery
Support DVD information The support DVD that comes with the Disney Netpal package contains the drivers, software applications, and utilities that you can install to avail all the features. Running the support DVD Insert the support DVD in the external optical drive. The DVD automatically displays the Drivers menu if Autorun is enabled in your computer. If Autorun is NOT enabled in your computer, browse the contents of the support DVD to locate the file ASSETUP.EXE from the BIN folder.
Drivers menu The Drivers menu shows available device drivers when the system detects installed devices. Install the necessary drivers to activate the devices. Utilities menu The Utilities menu shows the applications that the Disney Netpal supports. Contact Click the Contact tab to display the ASUS contact information. Other information The icons on the top right corner of the screen provide additional information on the Disney Netpal and the contents of the support DVD.
System Recovery Using the Support DVD The Support DVD includes an image of the operating system, installed on your system at the factory. The Support DVD provides a comprehensive recovery solution that quickly restores your system to its original working state, provided that your system drive is in good working order. Before using the Support DVD, copy your data files to a USB storage device or to a network drive and make note of any customized configuration settings (such as network settings). 1. 2.

Boot Booster The Boot Booster item in BIOS setup helps shorten your Disney Netpal bootup time. However, you MUST disable this BIOS item before you change any Disney Netpal components or perform system recovery (from USB flash disk, external optical drive or hidden partition).
