This chapter gives a general description of ASUS P2-P5G41/ P4-P5G41. The chapter lists the system features including introduction on the front and rear panels, and internal components.
1.1 Welcome! Thank you for purchasing the ASUS P2-P5G41/P4-P5G41! The ASUS ������������������������������������������������������������������ P2-P5G41/P4-P5G41������������������������������������������������� is an all-in-one barebone system with rich home entertainment features. The system comes in a stylish casing and powered by an ASUS motherboard that supports the Intel® Prescott, Smithfield, Cedarmill, Kentsfield, Conroe, Wolfdale, and Yorkfield processors.

This switch allows you to adjust the system input voltage according to the voltage supply in your area. If the voltage supply in your area is 100-127V, set this switch to 115V. If the voltage supply in your area is 200-240V, set this switch to 230V.

Chapter 2 Starting up This chapter helps you power up the system and install drivers and utilities from the Support CD.
2.1 Installing an operating system The ASUS P2-P5G41/P4-P5G41 supports Windows® XP / Vista Operating Systems (OS). Always install the latest OS version and corresponding updates to maximize the features of your hardware. 2.2 • To ensure that the OS work properly, install the drivers included in the Support CD. • Motherboard settings and hardware options vary. Use the setup procedures presented in this chapter for reference only. Refer to your OS documentation for detailed information.
2.3 Support CD information The support CD that comes with the system package contains the drivers, software applications, and utilities that you can install to get all the system features. The contents of the Support CD are subject to change at any time without notice. Visit the ASUS website at www.asus.com for updates. 2.3.1 Running the Support CD Place the Support CD into the optical drive. The CD automatically displays the Drivers menu if Autorun is enabled on your computer.
2.3.2 Drivers menu The Drivers menu shows the available device drivers if the system detects installed devices. Install the necessary drivers to activate the devices. ASUS InstALL - Installation Wizard for Anti-Virus and Drivers Utility Installs all of the drivers and anti-virus software using the installation wizard. Norton Internet Security 2009 Installs Norton Internet Security 2009. Intel Chipset Inf Update Program Installs the Intel® chipset inf update program.
2.3.3 Utilities menu The Utilities menu shows the applications that the motherboard supports. ASUS InstAll - Installation Wizard for Utilities Installs all of the utilities using the installation wizard. Acrobat Reader 8 Installs the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader that allows you to open, view, and print documents in Portable Document Format (PDF). ASUS Update The ASUS Update utility allows you to update the motherboard BIOS in a Windows® environment.
2.3.4 Manual menu The Manual menu contains a list of supplementary user manuals. The manuals are in Portable Document Format (PDF) format. Install the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader from the Utilities menu before opening a manual. 2.3.5 ASUS Contact information Click the Contact tab to display the ASUS contact information.
2.3.6 Other information The icons on the top right corner of the screen give additional information on the motherboard and the contents of the Support CD. Click an icon to display the specified information. Motherboard Info Displays the general specifications of the motherboard. Browse this CD Displays the Support CD contents in graphical format.
Technical Support Form Displays the ASUS Technical Support Request Form that you have to fill out when requesting technical support. Filelist Displays the contents of the Support CD and a brief description of each item in text format.
2.4 ASUS AI Manager ASUS AI Manager allows you to launch AI Disk, AI Security, and AI Probe easily. 2.4.1 Installing AI Manager To install AI Manager on your computer: 1. Place the Support CD into the optical drive. The CD automatically displays the Drivers menu if Autorun is enabled on your computer. If Autorun is NOT enabled on your computer, browse the contents of the Support CD to locate the ASSETUP.EXE file from the BIN folder. Double-click the ASSETUP.EXE to run the CD. 2.
Click to switch between a full-screen AI Manager window and the Quick bar. Click to keep AI Manager in the taskbar. Click to close AI Manager. 2.4.4 Main Launch AI Disk, AI Security, or AI Probe from the Main menu. Click the small triangle to open or close the Main menu. Click to open/close the Main menu AI Disk AI Disk allows you to easily clear the temporary IE files, IE URLs, IE cookies, IE history list, Recycle Bin, and recently opened files list.
AI Security AI Security allows you to set passwords to lock your removable storage devices such as a USB flash disk and CD/DVD disk, which ensures more security for your data. To lock a device: 1. If you are using AI Security for the first time, key in a password consisting of up to 20 alphanumeric characters. 2 Confirm your password. 3. Key in your password hint (optional). 4. Click OK. 5. Select the device you want to lock, then click Apply.
6. Key in your password, then click OK. The device you selected cannot be accessed without the password. To unlock a device: 1. Deselect the device you locked, then click Apply. 2. Key in your password, then click OK. To change your password, click Change Password and follow the onscreen instructions. AI Probe AI Probe automatically detects the motherboard and CPU temperatures, CPU fan speed, and CPU voltage. It also allows you to adjust these values manually.
2.4.5 My favorites Add your favorite applications to the My Favorites menu. To add an application: 1. Click Add and then select from the succeeding screen the application you want to add to the My Favorites menu. 2. Click Open. The application you selected is added and its icon appears. Right-click an icon in the My Favorites menu to open, delete, or rename the corresponding application. Double-click an icon to open the corresponding application.
2.4.6 Support The Support menu displays links to the ASUS international website, online technical support website, online download support website, and contact information website. 2.4.7 Information The Information menu displays the general information of your system, motherboard, CPU, BIOS, memory, and other devices installed.
Chapter 3 Motherboard info This chapter gives information about the motherboard that comes with the system. This chapter includes the motherboard layout, jumper settings, and connector locations.
3.1 Introduction The P2-P5G41/P4-P5G41 barebone system comes with an ASUS motherboard. 3.3 1. Jumpers Clear RTC RAM (CLRTC) This jumper allows you to clear the Real Time Clock (RTC) RAM in the CMOS. You can clear the CMOS memory of date, time, and system setup parameters by erasing the CMOS RTC RAM data. The onboard button cell battery powers the RAM data in the CMOS, which includes system setup information such as the system passwords. To erase the RTC RAM: 1. Turn OFF the computer and unplug the power cord. 2. Move the jumper cap from pins 1-2 (default) to pins 2-3.
2. USB device wake-up (3-pin USBPW1-4, USBPW56) Set these jumpers to +5V to wake up the computer from S1 sleep mode (CPU stopped, DRAM refreshed, system running in low power mode) using the connected USB devices. 3.4 1. Connectors Serial ATA connectors (7-pin SATA1, SATA2) These connectors are for the Serial ATA signal cables for Serial ATA drives. • Install Windows® XP Service Pack 1 before using Serial ATA drives. • When using the connectors in IDE mode, connect the primary (boot) hard disk drive to the SATA1 connector. 3. CPU Fan connector (4-pin CPU_FAN) The fan connector support cooling fans of 350mA~2000mA (24W max.). Connect the fan cable to the fan connector on the motherboard, ensuring that the black wire of each cable matches the ground pin of the connector. Insufficient air flow inside the system may damage the motherboard components.

ATX power connectors (24-pin EATXPWR, 4-pin ATX12V) These connectors are for ATX power supply plugs. The plugs from the power supply are designed to fit these connectors in only one orientation. Find the proper orientation and push down firmly until the connectors completely fit.
7. Digital audio connectors (4-1 pin SPDIF_OUT, SPDIF_OUT1) P5Q8L SPDIFOUT GND +5V SPDIFOUT GND +5V These connectors are for additional Sony/Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) ports. Connect the S/PDIF Out module cables to these connectors, then install the modules to slots opening at the back of the system chassis. SPDIF_OUT SPDIF_OUT1 P5Q8L Digital Audio Connectors 8. Chassis intrusion connector (4-1 pin CHASSIS) This connector is for a chassis-mounted intrusion detection sensor or switch.
10. Optical drive audio-in connector (4-pin CD) This connector allows you to receive stereo audio input from sound sources such as a CD-ROM, TV tuner, or MPEG card.
3-10 Chapter 3: Motherboard info
Chapter 4 BIOS setup This chapter tells how to change the system settings through the BIOS Setup menus. Detailed descriptions of the BIOS parameters are also provided.
4.1 Managing and updating your BIOS The following utilities allow you to manage and update the motherboard Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) setup. 1. AFUDOS: Updates the BIOS in DOS mode using a bootable floppy disk or USB flash disk. 2. ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3: Updates the BIOS using a floppy disk, USB flash disk, or the motherboard Support CD when the BIOS file fails or gets corrupted. 3. ASUS EZ Flash 2: Updates the BIOS using a floppy disk or USB flash disk during POST. 4.
Windows® Vista environment 2. a. Insert a formatted, high density 1.44MB floppy disk into the floppy disk drive. b. Click c. Right-click Floppy Disk Drive, then click Format. d. Select the Create an MS-DOS startup disk checkbox. e. Click Start. from the Windows® desktop, then select Computer. Copy the original or the latest motherboard BIOS file to the bootable floppy disk. 4.1.
1. Copy the AFUDOS utility (afudos.exe) from the motherboard Support CD to the bootable floppy disk you created earlier. 2. Boot the system in DOS mode, then at the prompt key in: afudos /o[filename] The [filename] is any user-assigned filename which consists of up to eight alphanumeric characters for the main filename and three alphanumeric characters for the extension name. 4.1.3 ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 utility The ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 utility is an auto recovery tool that allows you to restore the BIOS file when it fails or gets corrupted during the updating process. You can update a corrupted BIOS file using the motherboard Support CD, a floppy disk, or USB flash disk that contains the updated BIOS file. • Prepare the motherboard Support CD, a USB flash disk, or a floppy disk containing the updated motherboard BIOS file before using this utility.
Recovering the BIOS from the Support CD To recover the BIOS from the Support CD: 1. Remove any floppy disk from the floppy disk drive, then turn on the system. 2. Place the Support CD into the optical drive. The utility displays the following message and automatically checks the floppy disk for the original or updated BIOS file. Bad BIOS checksum. 4.1.4 ASUS EZ Flash 2 utility The ASUS EZ Flash 2 feature allows you to update the BIOS without having to go through the long process of booting from a floppy disk and using a DOS‑based utility. The EZ Flash 2 utility is built in the BIOS chip so it is accessible by pressing + during the Power-On Self-Test (POST). To update the BIOS using EZ Flash 2: 1. Download the latest BIOS file from the ASUS website at www.asus.com. 2.
4.1.5 ASUS Update utility The ASUS Update is a utility that allows you to manage, save, and update the motherboard BIOS in Windows® environment. The ASUS Update utility allows you to: • Save the current BIOS file; • Download the latest BIOS file from the Internet; • Update the BIOS from an updated BIOS file; • Update the BIOS directly from the Internet; and • View the BIOS version information. This utility is available in the Support CD that comes with the motherboard package.
Updating the BIOS through the Internet To update the BIOS through the Internet: 4-10 1. Launch the ASUS Update utility from the Windows® desktop by clicking Start > Programs > ASUS > ASUSUpdate > ASUSUpdate. The ASUS Update main window appears. 2. Select Update BIOS from the Internet option from the dropdown menu, then click Next. 3. Select the ASUS FTP site nearest you to avoid network traffic, or click Auto Select. Click Next.
4. From the FTP site, select the BIOS version that you want to download. Click Next. 5. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the updating process. The ASUS Update utility is capable of updating itself through the Internet. Always update the utility to get all its features. Updating the BIOS through a BIOS file To update the BIOS through a BIOS file: 1. Launch the ASUS Update utility from the Windows® desktop by clicking Start > Programs > ASUS > ASUSUpdate > ASUSUpdate.
4.2 BIOS setup program This motherboard supports a programmable firmware chip that you can update using the provided utility described in section 4.1 Managing and updating your BIOS. Use the BIOS Setup program when you are installing a motherboard, reconfiguring your system, or prompted to “Run Setup”. This section explains how to configure your system using this utility. Even if you are not prompted to use the Setup program, you can change the configuration of your computer in the future.

4.2.4 Menu items The highlighted item on the menu bar displays the specific items for that menu. For example, selecting Main shows the Main menu items. 4.3 Main menu When you enter the BIOS Setup program, the Main menu screen appears, giving you an overview of the basic system information. Refer to section 4.2.1 BIOS menu screen for information on the menu screen items and how to navigate through them. 4.3.3 SATA 1/2 While entering Setup, the BIOS automatically detects the presence of SATA devices. There is a separate submenu for each SATA device. Select a device item then press to display the SATA device information. SMART Monitoring [Auto] Enables or disables the S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology) capability of your hard drive. This features allows your system to report read/write errors of the hard drive and to issue warnings when a third party hardware monitor utility is installed. 4.3.5 System Information This menu gives you an overview of the general system specifications. The BIOS automatically detects the items in this menu. 4.4 Advanced menu The Advanced menu items allow you to change the settings for the CPU and other system devices. Take caution when changing the settings of the Advanced menu items. Incorrect field values can cause the system to malfunction. Ratio CMOS Setting [Auto] Sets the ratio between CPU Core Clock and the FSB frequency. Configuration options: [Auto]. If an invalid ratio is set in CMOS then actual and setpoint values may differ. Key in ratio numbers directly. C1E Support [Enabled] Allows you to enable or disable Intel CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) function, a CPU power-saving function in system halt state. When enabled, the CPU core frequency and voltage will be reduced during the system halt state to decrease power consumption.
The following item appears only when you installed an Intel® Pentium® 4 or later CPU that supports the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® Technology (EIST). Intel® SpeedStep® Tech [Enabled] Allows you to use the Enhanced Intel® SpeedStep® Technology. When setting this item to [Enabled], you can adjust the system power settings in the operating system to use the EIST feature. Set this item to [Disabled] if you do not want to use the EIST. Configuration options: [Enabled] [Disabled] 4.4.
Memory Remap Feature [Enabled] Enables or disables the remapping of overlapped PCI memory above the total physical memory. We recommend that you set this item to [Enabled] when you install 4GB memory. Configuration options: [Enabled] [Disabled] DRAM Frequency [Auto] Selects the DRAM frequency. Configuration options: [Auto] [667 MHz] [800 MHz] Configure DRAM Timing by SPD [Enabled] Allows you to enable or disable configurating DRAM Timing by SPD.

4.4.5 PCI PnP The PCI PnP menu items allow you to change the advanced settings for PCI/PnP devices. The menu includes setting IRQ and DMA channel resources for either PCI/PnP or legacy ISA devices, and setting the memory size block for legacy ISA devices. Take caution when changing the settings of the PCI PnP menu items. Incorrect field values can cause the system to malfunction.
4.5 Power menu The Power menu items allow you to change the settings for the Advanced Power Management (APM). Select an item then press to display the configuration options.
