You may register up to a total of six Expansion Handsets to this telepnone system.(Model 5800 handset sold separately). Additional handsets will be assigned Handset 2, Handset 3, Handset 4, Handset 5, and Handset 6.
Wall Installation 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Connect the power cord and telephone line cord to the underside of the base, as shown (figure a). Position the mounting bracket as shown (figure b). Feed the short telephone line cord through the hole in the center of the mounting bracket (figure b), align the bracket with the base, and slide into the hole on the base as shown (figure c). Lock the mounting bracket in place (figure d).
91-5431-10-00_ATT5870_R0JUN040 2/5/03 4:03 PM Page 6 Spare Battery/Power Failure Backup INSTALLATION INSTALLATION You can buy a spare handset battery (AT&T Battery 2401, SKU# 91077, sold separately) and keep it charged in the base at all times. In the event of a power failure, a fully charged battery in the spare battery compartment will allow you to make and receive calls from the cordless handset only for up to 21/2 hours. The spare battery will fully charge in 24 hours.
Belt Clip You may choose to use the optional belt clip with your handset. Headset You can use this telephone hands-free when you install any industry standard 2.5 mm headset (purchased separately). For best results use an AT&T 2.5 mm headset. Plug the headset into the jack located on the left side of the handset (under the small rubber flap). Do not force the connection, but make sure the plug fits securely.
FEATURE SETUP – HANDSET Feature Setup Menu FEATURE FEATURE SETUP SETUP –– HANDSET HANDSET Press the softkey under MENU to enter the Feature Setup menu. Use or to choose features, then select to save your choice. OK NOTE: If you wait more than 20 seconds without pressing a key, the handset returns to the idle screen. NOTE: If you receive an incoming call while in feature setup, the phone automatically exits the menu to let you take the call.

During a call, you can adjust the quality of the sound. Pressing repeatedly will cycle you through four different responses. NOTE: The mid-boost setting is hearing-aid compatible. BASS – Low frequency sounds enhanced. S MID – Mid-range sounds enhanced.
Adjust the volume of the handset ringer. Setting the volume so that no bars show on the graph turns the ringer off. 1 Press MENU , then until the screen highlights HANDSET SETTINGS. OK . 2 Press OK 3 Press when RINGER VOLUME is highlighted. The screen displays RINGER VOLUME OK 4 5 Press or to hear samples of ring volumes. OK Press to save the displayed setting. NOTE: Ringer Volume and Vibrate settings are independent. Adjusting Ringer Volume does not affect Vibrate.
Ringer Melody FEATURE FEATURE SETUP SETUP –– HANDSET HANDSET The Ringer Melody sets which ringer you hear when you have an outside call. The Ringer Melody default setting is #01; there are eight Ringer Melody selections. 1 Press MENU , then until the screen highlights handset settings. Language Setting FEATURE FEATURE SETUP SETUP –– HANDSET HANDSET You can set each registered handset so the display appears in English, Spanish or French. The default setting is ENGLISH.
FEATURE SETUP – BASE Ringer Volume 1 2 O M Make sure the base is not in use. Pressing and holding , then press VOL + or VOL - to adjust the ringer volume. Each time you press + or - you will hear how loud the setting is.To turn the ringer off, press until you hear no tone.

You will hear a special tone when you reach the highest or lowest setting. Speaker During a conversation, press VOL + or VOL - to adjust the base speaker volume. Stand the handset on a flat surface (not in the base) and continue your conversation. NOTE: For best performance, use the handset speakerphone in a quiet location with the handset facing you from no more than four feet away. TELEPHONE OPERATION Handset 1 2 N Press P/F to connect to the new call when you receive a call-waiting signal. Press P/F again to return to the original call. NOTE: Use P/F to access other phone company subscriber services, as described by your provider.

The other party will be unable to hear anything on your end. The screen displays MICROPHONE MUTED R 2 To return to two-way conversation, press MUTE again. Base Press M on the base to prevent the other party from hearing you, the MUTE light goes on. Press M again to return to two-way conversation.

If the clock feature is on, this message will be displayed for five seconds, then return to the clock display with H on top of the screen. After five minutes, the handset will ring to remind you there’s a call on hold. If you do not answer the ring, the call will be disconnected. ML 1 2 While on a call, press HOLD .
Temporary Tone Dialing If you have dial pulse (rotary) service, you can change from dial pulse to touch tone dialing during a call. 1 Make the call, and wait until it is connected. 2 Press t. Keys pressed after this send touch tone signals. 3 After you hang up, the phone automatically returns to dial pulse (rotary) service.

INTERCOM FROM [PARTY NAME] You have an intercom call from [PARTY NAME], for example HANDSET 2. Once an intercom call is underway, the handsets will show the icons of the participating parties. LOW BATTERY The handset battery is low. EXTENSION IN USE Another phone on this line is in use.

On steady with one or more numbers next to it, indicating which extensions are using the line. For example, 12 indicates that Handset 1 and Handset 2 are on an outside call. Intercom indicator On steady with the extension numbers currently on an intercom call. For example, 02 indicates that the Base and Handset 2 are on an intercom call.

INTERCOM OPERATION Intercom Calls If you have more than one handset (AT&T 5800, purchased separately) registered with your 5870 base, you can make intercom calls between handsets. From Base to All Handsets 1 2 Press on on the base. All handsets will ring. From Base to Selected Handset 1 2 Press on the base. Press the number of the handset you want to reach (for example 3). From Handset to Base 1 2 3 Press MENU INTERCOM OK Press Press OK press , then press until is highlighted. .

Conference Calling From the Handset INTERCOM OPERATION 1 2 If one handset is already on a call, you can connect a second handset to the call by pressing P on the second handset — OR — If you are on an intercom call and have a second call on hold, press P to add the held call to the conference call. Disconnect either or both handsets by pressing O. From the Base 1 2 37 If one handset is already on a call, you can connect the base to the call by pressing K on the base.
PHONE BOOK This telephone can store up to 50 telephone numbers and names. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 16 characters. Store a Number and Name in Phone Book 1 Enter the number you want to store. The screen displays the number you enter. To delete a digit, press O/C; to clear the screen press and hold O/C. 555 0123 2 Press MEM . Name, number, time and date information can all be stored, if they are sent with the call. Calls are automatically stored in the order they are received, with call “1” stored as the most recent call.

Callers using a touch tone phone can select the mailbox in which their messages will be recorded by pressing 1, 2 or 3. All other messages will be recorded in Mailbox 1. About Announcements ANSWERING SYSTEM OPERATION • • • • • 51 You can record up to two different announcements — one for normal answering and one for when you’ve set the system to play the announcement only.
RecordYour Announcement NOTE: If you have assigned different mailboxes to different people, be sure to tell callers in your announcement to press 1, 2, or 3 to leave a message in the appropriate mailbox. Press m until you hear “Change announcement.” 2 Press After you hear “Now recording” followed by a beep, speak toward the base to record an announcement up to 90 seconds long. 3 Press any PLAY/STOP button to stop recording. The system plays back your recorded message.
Answering System Feature Setup ANSWERING SYSTEM OPERATION You can set up one feature at a time, or you can set up a feature and then move on to set up another feature. 1 Make sure the answering system is on. 2 Press and release m until you hear the system announce the feature you want to set. Refer to the Feature Summary chart on page 54 for a description of the features and your choices. 3 Press c to hear the feature’s settings.

While the message plays, the message window displays the number of the message.
Adjust Playback Volume Press VOL + or VOL - to adjust the base speaker volume while playing back messages. Call Screening/Intercept 1 2 3 Make sure the answering system and call screening are on, and set the message playback volume control above level 1 so you can hear the caller’s message. If you decide to take the call, press P on the handset or K on the base.

The system beeps once and then announces the number of new messages. 3 Enter a remote command (see “Remote Access Commands” on page 60).

NOTE: Talk time and standby time may vary depending on operating conditions. BATTERIES Battery Indicator Ten to fifteen minutes before the battery charge gets too low to operate the handset, an empty battery icon ( ) will flash on the screen, you’ll hear three short tones, and the screen will display LOW BATTERY.

In the event of a power failure, a fully charged battery in the spare battery compartment will allow you to make and receive calls from the cordless handset only for up to 2 1/2 hours. BATTERIES The spare battery will fully charge in 24 hours.
Replace the Handset Battery Pack 1 BATTERIES 2 Install the handset battery. Use only AT&T Battery 2401, SKU# 91077. Charge the handset battery. • Place the handset in the base. • Charge the battery for at least 12 hours. After the first charge, the battery will charge in eight hours. a) Remove battery compartment cover by pressing on the raised spot and sliding downward. 63 b) Align the contacts and place the battery pack in the battery compartment.

PROBLEM SOLUTION If you hear noise or interference when using the phone: • You may be out of range. Move closer to the base.

The answering system clock is not set automatically with incoming Caller ID IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY information.
