General-Purpose
Adapter

glare Condition that occurs when a user tries to call out on
a loop-start trunk at the same time that another call
arrives on the same trunk.
GPA (General-Purpose Adapter) Device that connects an
analog multiline telephone to optional equipment
such as an answering machine or a fax machine.
ground-start trunk Trunk on which the communications system, after
verifying that the trunk is idle (no ground on tip lead),
transmits a request for service (puts ground on ring
lead) to the telephone company central office (CO).
Group IV (G4) fax
machine
A fax unit, offering 400 by 100 dots per inch (DPI) in
fine mode, that can operate at any speed for commu-
nication with a Group III (G3) fax machine or another
Group IV (G4) fax machine.
