AC Power Plugs
While speaker cables need to maintain perfect integrity
across the entire audio band, power cables only have to be
“perfect” in a much narrower band. The amount of energy
transferred and the size of the associated magnetic elds
put AC power cables and speaker cables in a class of their
own. It’s not surprising that AC power and speaker cables
are subject to many of the same distortion mechanisms,
and benet from many of the same damage-minimizing
design elements and techniques.
AudioQuest’s entry-level power cords utilize semi-solid
conductors that maintain constant position over the length
of the cable, minimizing magnetic interaction among the
semi-solid strands. Most of AudioQuest’s power cords,
however, use solid conductors, which completely eliminate
this distortion. Superior metals minimize distortion in
all applications, so AQ’s power cords use the same, low-
distortion, high-performance metals found in AQ’s signal-
carrying audio cables. AudioQuest’s Noise-Dissipation
System (NDS) is employed in NRG-4 and up. Typical AC
power cable shield systems absorb and then drain noise
and RF energy to component ground, which modulates
and distorts the critical “reference” ground plane. NDS’s
alternating layers of metal- and carbon-loaded synthetics
“shield the shield,” absorbing and reecting most of this
energy before it reaches the layer attached to component
ground.
The wall plugs on AC power cables are a crucial material
element as well … While many of AQ’s wall plugs are
Gold-Plated, AQ’s top-tier AC power cables use Hanging-
Silver, a process in which the pure-copper plugs are
submerged (“hung”) into a vat of extreme-purity silver
(rather than the conventional “barrel” plating in a drum
tumbler). The result is a very thick, Direct-Silver Plate with
no performance-degrading intermediary materials (such
as nickel). NRG-500 Wall Plugs use Hanging Gold directly
over pure Purple Copper, while NRG-1000 Wall Plugs use
Hanging-Silver directly over pure Red Copper.
Low-distortion AC power cables improve the performance
of all AV system components. They also make just as much
dierence on both the input and output of power-line
conditioners.
