CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SELECTION OF THE FR-540 (FAMILY RADIO) It is one of the most sophisticated and reliable two way family radios available.
FEATURES Your FR-540 Family Radio is a portable, easy to use, two-way radio that you can carry almost anywhere. It is skillfully constructed to give you reliable communications for many different applications. The FR-540 is ideal for use around the house, in your boat, on hunting and camping trips, on the ski slopes or at the mall.
PERFORMANCE Your transceiver will achieve its maximum operating range when communicating with other transceivers in a flat open area with no trees or buildings obstructing its signal. Range may be up to two miles under such conditions. Obstacles such as buildings, trees or mountains will tend to reduce the transceiver’s effective range.

1. Power Button (PWR): Press and hold this button for 2 seconds to turn the transceiver on or off. 2. Push-to-Talk Button (PTT): Press to transmit. Release to receive. 3. LCD DISPLAY AND OPERATION The FR-540 is equipped with an LCD display to indicate its settings and functions. When the radio is on, pressing any button will illuminate the display for 5 seconds. BATTERY INSTALLATION Your FR-540 requires three “AAA” alkaline cells or three rechargeable “AAA” cells. Alkaline batteries will provide the best performance from your transceiver. Remove the battery cover by rotating the belt clip away from the battery compartment. Slide the battery cover downward while applying pressure at the its grooved section. Observe the polarity symbols inside the battery tray when installing the batteries. CAUTION: Incorrect battery installation can damage the unit.
USING YOUR FR-540 Turning the Transceiver On and Off (PWR) Pressing the PWR button (1) for 2 seconds will activate the unit. The speaker will sound a beep tone to confirm the transceiver’s activation. In addition, the transceiver will perform a 1-second power-on self-test, whereby the LCD display will show all functional items, including a test of the 2-digit channel display (88 ), plus a test of the 2-digit CTCSS channel code display.
FUNCTIONS Function Select (F) Button Pressing the Function button will allow selection of frequency channels, as well as selection of the various unit functions. Each press permits selection of the desired channel (1–14), up to 38 CTCSS channel codes, beep tone, scan, VOX and Dual Watch functions. This button also activates the Key lock feature when pressed and held for more than 2 seconds. Channel and CTCSS Selection Press function button until large two-digit channel display flashes.

While in Scan mode, the unit will pause on any active channel for 5 seconds, and then proceed to the next higher channel. The unit will scan channels 1–14 for activity and scanning will continue until the PTT, monitor, or call button is pressed. VOX Function This feature enables you to have hands-free conversation.
To Transmit 1. Set the desired primary channel. 2. Press and hold the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button while speaking slowly and clearly in a normal voice, approximately 2 to 3 inches from the microphone. 3. The transmit indicator ( ) will illuminate while transmitting. 4. Release the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button when you finish speaking to receive incoming signals. To Receive. 1. Set the desired channel. 2. Adjust the volume control to the desired listening volume by using the up and down buttons. 3.
WARNING n Remove the batteries from the transceiver if it is not expected to be used for long periods. This will eliminate the possibility of battery acid leaking from the batteries and corroding the transceiver. n Avoid exposing the unit to water or extremes of temperature. n Do not use this device in or near a mining facility, which uses remotely triggered explosives or in areas labeled “Blasting Area”. Les obstacles, tels que bâtiments, arbres ou montagnes tendent à réduire la couverture effective de l'émetteur-récepteur.

L'AFFICHEUR À CRISTAUX LIQUIDES ET SON FONCTIONNEMENT Le FR-540 est doté d'un afficheur à cristaux liquides permettant de visualiser les réglages et les fonctions de l'appareil. Lorsque la radio est allumée, presser une touche quelconque éclaire l'afficheur pendant 5 secondes.
MISE EN PLACE DES PILES Votre FR-540 est alimenté par trois piles alcalines « AAA » ou par trois batteries rechargeables « AAA ». Les piles alcalines vous permettront d'obtenir les meilleures performances de votre émetteur-récepteur. Retirez le couvercle du compartiment des piles en faisant pivoter la pince de ceinture de façon à l'écarter du compartiment des piles. Faites coulisser le couvercle vers le bas tout en appuyant sur la partie striée.
UTILISATION DE VOTRE FR-540 Allumer et éteindre l'émetteur-récepteur (PWR) Une pression de 2 secondes sur la touche PWR (1) met l'appareil sous tension. Le haut-parleur émet une tonalité d'avertissement pour confirmer que l'appareil est sous tension. L'émetteur-récepteur effectue par ailleurs un autotest de mise sous tension de 1 seconde, par lequel l'afficheur à cristaux liquides affiche l'ensemble des pictogrammes des fonctions.
FONCTIONS Sélecteur de fonctions (F) Une pression sur cette touche vous permet de sélectionner les canaux de fréquence ainsi que les diverses fonctions de l'appareil. Chaque pression vous permet de sélectionner le canal voulu (de 1 à 14) et jusqu'à 38 codes de canaux CTCSS, ainsi que les fonctions Tonalités d'avertissement, Exploration, Fonctionnement commandé par la voix (VOX) et Double écoute.

Verrouillage des touches Cette fonction permet d'éviter de modifier accidentellement les réglages de l'appareil. Lorsque le verrouillage des touches est activé, seul le poussoir d'émission (PTT) est opérant. Pour activer le verrouillage des touches, pressez la touche de fonction (F) pendant plus de 2 secondes jusqu'à ce que l'icône de verrouillage des touches ( ) s'affiche. Pour désactiver le verrouillage des touches, pressez la touche de fonction pendant plus de 2 secondes jusqu'à ce que l'icône s'efface.
AVERTISSEMENT n Retirer les piles de l'émetteur-récepteur lorsque celui-ci ne doit pas être utilisé pendant une période prolongée. On évitera ainsi les fuites d'électrolyte pouvant provoquer la corrosion de l'émetteur-récepteur. n Éviter d'exposer l'appareil à l'eau ou à des températures extrêmes. n Ne pas utiliser cet appareil dans ou à proximité d'une exploitation minière où l'on fait exploser des explosifs à distance, ni dans des zones qualifiées de « zones de dynamitage ».
