Terminology
Alveolar ridge: situated behind the incisors.
Tip of the tongue: the extremity of the tongue.
Blade of the tongue: situated behind the tip of the tongue.
Front of the tongue: situated between the blade and the centre of the tongue.
Centre of the tongue: the middle of the tongue.
Back of the tongue: inner extremity of the tongue.
Vocal chords: muscles situated either side of the larynx whose movements determine voice production.
Glottis: opening between the vocal chords.
Uvula: fleshy elongated part situated at the extremity of the palate.
Velum (soft palate): muscle situated on the upper part of the mouth which extends the hard palate rearwards.
Palate (hard palate): hard upper part of the mouth.
