450 Chapter 20: Managing Scenes and Projects
When the drawing is linked to 3ds Max, that
camera and its target appear in the scene named
Camera:viewname and Camera:viewname.Target.
Light S ources
Draw ing files, exported from Revit, can contain
light sources, however, they do not export with the
DWG or DXF files. What does get exported is the
3D mesh geometry representing the light fixture.
Therefore, when you import or link the drawing to
3dsMax,thelightobjectisstrictlygeometry,not
an actual light source like a spotlight or omni light
that you can adjust.
These pieces of geometry are still usefu l in that you
can use them as reference points for placing and
aligning lights you add in 3ds Max.
DXF Files
Along with the ability to export DWG files, Revit
canalsoexporttotheDXFfileformat.Theonly
difference is in how they handle drawings that are
linked (RVT links) to the Revit drawing.
When exporting to DXF, the linked drawi ngs are
automatically bound to the drawing. Therefore,
whileexportingtoaDWGhonorsthelinked
drawings and treats them as AutoCAD xrefs, an
exported DXF file will not have xrefs. Instead, the
linked drawings are converted to blocks.
Theresultingsceneorganizationwillbeslightly
different when linking or importing a DXF as
opposed to a DWG, but only w hen RVT links are
present in the dra wing.

TheFileLinkManagerandDWG/DXFImporter
have many settings that you c an adjust s o you
get the b est results when linking or impor ting a
dra wing that you’ve exported from Revit. In this
section, you’ll find some recommended settings
that you can use when linking or importing
your DWG files. These settings are found on the
Basic File Link Settings dialog (page 3–429),the

Use the R evit Pr eset
3ds Max includes a preset named Revit”thatyou
can use when using File Link to link a dr awing t hat

of the following suggested settings turned on by
default. Or, you can use the Revit preset as a basis
for your own customized Revit preset containing
the sett ings you prefer.
The Revit preset can b e assigned from the Preset
list on the Attach panel of the File Link Manager
(page 3–422).Youcanedit the preset (page 3–438)
by choosing the Revit preset shown on the Presets
