IGES Log Files
During the translation process, the software creates
log files containing detailed information about
the processing of the model. This information
includes er ror messages and entity-mapping
statistics. You can use this log file to understand
what occurred during the translation.

3ds Max file name, with the extension of .xli
(input) for import, and .xlo (output) for exp or t.

Name of the file processed.
Number and sever ity of errors encountered,
a description of them, and an explanation of
what can be done, or what was done to the data
in error . (The software attempts to fix many
errors itself.)
Summary of entities processed.
List of the entity types encountered and those
created.

IGES files are used to import and export
NURBS objects to and from 3ds Max (and other
programs that support this file format). For more
information, see Overview of IGES in 3ds Max
(page 3–558).
In some cases, when you import an IGES file, the
translat ion doesn’t produce exact replicas. To
understand what happens to each entity when
it’s translated, review the IGES import table (page
3–561).
3dsMaximportsanobjectcontainingmultiple
surfaces as a single NURBS object. To work with a
single surface of the object, detach it in sub-object
NURBS and work w ith only that object. This
releases the rest of the object from memory. For
more information, see NU RBS (page 3–559).
When you import IGES files, 3ds Max c reates a
log file containing detailed information about the
processing of the model. The name of the file has
the form of filename.xli.Formoreinformation,
see IGES Log files (page 3–560).
Note: 3dsMaxcreatesandusesafewtemporary
filesduringtranslation. Temporaryfilescan
be large. If there has been a computer or IGES
translation failure and temporary files remain on
your system, they might need to b e removed to free
up disk space. For storage of these temporary files
in Windows, 3ds Max uses the directory specified
by the TEMP env ironment variable, or the current
directory if TEMP is n ot set.
