Customize menu > Preferences > mental ray panel
Inter face
General group
Enable mental ray Ex tensions—When on, enables
certain features that provide additional support for
the mental ray renderer. When off, these features
do not appear in the interface. Default=off.
Thesearethefeaturesenabledasmentalray
extensions to 3ds Max:
mental ray Connection rollout (page 2–1461) for
materials (Material Editor)
mental ray Light Shader rollout (page 2–1345)
(Modify panel for lig hts)
Wa rning: If you have assigned shaders and adjusted
their settings using the menta l ray Connection rollout,
turning off Enable mental ray E xtensions will lose all
these assignments and settings. The same applies to light
shader a ssignments.
Rendering group
Show Br a ck et s on Cur r ent B ucket s—Displays white
selection brackets at the corners of the bucket
currently being rendered. Default=on.
Show Visua l Final G ather Progr ess—When on,
the rendered frame window (page 3–5) displays
acoarseimageofthefinalgatherpointsasthose
points are being calculated. This prov ides visual
feedback of the final gather solution in progress.
Default=on.
If you prefer that the final render directly ove rwrite
the previous one in the rendered frame window
for comparison purposes, turn this off.

before rendering the rendered frame window (page
3–5) turns to a gr ay shade by clearing every other
scanline. This makes it easier to see the progress of
rendering. On the other hand, it ca n make it more
difficult to see the effect of small changes to the
model or the view. D efault=on.
