Style dialog toolbar
The toolbar cont ains a row of icon-based tools
in the form of buttons, many of which can be
activated by a keypress as well as the mouse.
In such cases, the key press In the following
descriptions, each tool’s name is followed by its
keyboard shortcut in square brackets. The tool
descriptions are grouped by function, as in the
toolbar.
Selec tion methods
Each guide hair has 15 segments and 14 vertices
(there ’s an additional, non-selectable vertex at the
root); for a tool to affect a guide, at least one of its
ver tices must be selected. To select vert ices using
Select mode, exit Brush/Drag mode (if necessary)
by pressing ESC, choose a selection mode, and
then drag in the Style window. Then use Brush or
Drag mode to style the selected guides.
Youcannotselectguidesbyclicking;youmust
drag. Selected vertices are m agenta in color,
selected guides are various shades of yellow-green,
andunselectedguidesaredarkred.
To select vertices in Br ush/Drag mode, choose a
selection mode, position the mouse where you
want to start selecting, press and hold X (add to
selection) or SHIFT+Z (replace selection), move
themouseintheStylewindow,andthenrelease
the key. As you move the mouse, the selection area
is shown by a circle at the mouse cursor. In Select
mode, to add to an existing selection, hold CTRL
as you drag. To subtract f rom a selection, hold
ALT as you drag.
TheStyleinterfaceoffersfourdifferentselection
modes. You can grab gu ides by the endpoints,
or you can select all the vertices at once (Whole
Strand). The t ype of selection has a great deal of
influenceoveratoolseffectonthehairguides,
because Hair is constantly applying IK and
constraints. Thebestwaytogetafeelforthe
differences is to practice using the various selection
methods with functions such as Translate.
