1066 Chapter 9: Surface Modeling
using t he current reference coordinate system (page
1–443).
Push/P ull V alue—Determines the direction and
maximum extent of a single application of the
push/pull operation. Positive values “pull” vertices
out of the object surface, and negative values
“push vert ices into the surface. Default =10.0.
A single application is defined as painting (that
is,draggingonceormoreoverthesamearea)
without lif ting the mouse button.
Tip: Yo u c a n u s e Alt to switch between pushing
and pulling w ith the same value while painting.
For example, if you’re pulling with a va lue of 8. 5,
press and hold
Alt to start pushing with a va lue
of -8.5.
Brush SizeSets the radius of the circular brush.
Onlyverticesinsidethebrushcirclearedeformed.
Default=20.0.
Tip: To change the brush radius interactively,
release the mouse button, press and hold
Shi f t +Ctr l +left mouse button, and then drag
the mouse. This also works with all other
painter-interface features in 3ds Max such as Skin
> Paint Weights and VertexPaint.
Brush StrengthSets the rate at which the brush
applies the Push/Pull value. A low Strength value
applies the effect more slowly than a high value.
Range=0.0 to 1.0. Default=1.0.
Tip: To change the brush strength interactively,
release the mouse button, press and hold
Shift +Alt +left mouse button, and then drag
the mouse. This also works with all other
painter-interface features in 3ds Max such as Skin
> Paint Weights and VertexPaint.
Brush OptionsClick this button to open the
Painter Options dialog (page 1–960),whereyou
can set various bru sh-related parameters.
Co mmi tMakes any deformation changes
permanent, “baking” them into the object
geometry. After using Commit, you can no longer
apply Revert to changes up to that point.
Cance lEliminates all changes since t he initial
application of Paint Deformation or the most
recent Commit operation.

Be veling involves first extruding and then scaling
the extruded polygon(s). Us e these settings for
beveling polygons in Interactive Manipulation
mode.

Group—Beveling takes place along the average
normal of each contiguous group of polygons. If
you bevel multiples of such g roups, each g roup
moves along its own averaged normal.
