Update group
By default, B ooleans are updated whenever you
change the operands. A scene that contains one
or more complicated, animated Booleans can
impede performance. The update options provide
alternate methods to improve performance.
Always—UpdatesBooleansimmediatelywhen
yo u change an operand, including the original
object of an instanced or referenced B operand.
This is the default behavior.
When Rend eri ng—Updates Booleans only when
you render the scene or click Update. With this
option, viewports dont always show curren t
geometry, but you can force an update when
necessar y.
Manually—UpdatesBooleansonlywhenyou
click Update. With this option, the viewports
and the render output don’t always show
current geometry, but you can force an update
when necessary.
Update—UpdatestheBoolean.TheUpdatebutton
is not available when Always is selected.

Use objects with different materials assigned to them. >
Create pa nel > Geometry > Compound Objects > Object
Type rollout > B oolean > Pick Boolean rollo ut > Pick
Operand B button > Selec t object in the viewport that
is operand B.
When you use Boolean operations w ith objects
that have b een assigned di fferent materials,
3ds Max displays the Material Attach Opt ions
dialog. This dialog offers five methods for
handling the materials and the material IDs (page
3–969) in the resultant B oolean object.
Note: If operand A has no material, and operand
B has a material assigned, the Boolean dialog lets
youchoosetoinheritthematerialfromoperandB.
If operand A has a m aterial assi g ned and operand
B has no material assi gned, the Bo olean object
automatically inherits materials from operand A.
