Turn To Poly Modifier 875
Procedure
Ex ampl e: To pr event inter i or v er ti ces f rom being
passed up the stack:
1.
Create an NGon in wireframe mode: Create
panel>Shapes>Splines>ObjectTyperollout
>NGon.
2. Open the Modify panel and convert the
NGon to an editable mesh by right-clicking
the stack display and choosing Convert to >
Editable Mesh.
3. In the stack displa y (or in the Selection rollout),
choose the Polygon sub-objec t mode.
4. Choose E dit > Object Proper ties to display the
Object Properties dialog.
5. Turn on Vertex Ticks. Choose OK to close the
dialog.
6. Click Cut under the Edit Ge ometry rollout, and
makeacutfromonesideoftheNGontothe
other. Notice that an interior vertex now exists.
Note: DoingthisonanNGondoesntalways
generate an inte rior vertex.
7. Apply the Turn To Poly modifier: Modify panel
> Modifier List > Turn To Poly. Notice the
interior vertex clears.

Keep Polygons Convex—D o es not join across edges
if the resulting polygon would not be convex.
"Convex" means that you can connect an y two
points in the polygon with a line that doesn’t go
outside the polygon. A polygon is not convex if
you can draw a line between vertices and that line
lays outside of the polygon.
Problems that can occur w ith non-convex
polygons include the fact that changes in the
geometry of the input object can result in a
different topology for the Turn To Poly result.
For instance, in a box, if you drag one of the top
cornersacrossthemiddleofthetopface,thebox
becomes non-convex. Turn To Poly would then
seethisastwotrianglesinsteadofonequad,and
the number of points in the result would change.
Limit Polygon Size—Limits the number of sides to a
polygon so that the surface is better defined. For
exam ple, you might want to produce a polymesh
of triangles and quads, or one composed of all
