can’t deselect the current object, nor can you select
other objects. To leave sub-object edit ing and
return to object-level editing, click t he top-level
name of the object in the modifier stack, or click
the high lighted sub-object level.
Click the top-level object name to exit sub-object editing.

These methods assume t he object ha s sub-object
levels. If the object has no sub-object levels (for
example, a primitive such as a sphere), the + icon
isnotpresent.Inthatcase,youneedtocollapse
the object or apply an Edit modifier b efore you can
edit its sub-object geometry.
1. Select the object you want to edit.
2. Apply an Edit Mesh modifier (optional,
depending on the object you select).
3. Open the Modify p anel.
4. On the modifier stack display, click the +
icon to expand the object’s hierarchy.
5. On the stack display, click to choose a level of
selection, such as vertex, edge, face, and so on.
Tip: For some kinds of objects, such as editable
meshes, shaded viewports don’t display
sub-object selections. If this is the case,
right-click the viewport label and choose
Wireframe or Edged Faces view .
Tip: For a detailed selection, you might want to
zoom in on the object.
6. Click one of the toolbar selection buttons, and
then use the same selection methods you’d use
on objects to select the sub-object components.
Or from the quad menu > Transform quadrant,
choose one of the selection methods and select
the sub-object components.
There are two alternat ive ways to go to a sub-object
level:
Select the object and go to the Modify
panel. Then right-click the object, and use the
quad menu > Tools 1 (upper-left) quadrant >
Sub-objects submenu.
Choose the selection level using buttons
in the Modify panel’s Selection rollout, if one is
present for the ty pe of object you’re editing.
Tip: Once you’re at a sub-object level, the INSERT
keycyclesthroughthelevelsofotherkindsof
sub-objects.
To exit sub-object selection mode, do one of the
following:
•Inthestackdisplay,clickthehighlighted
sub-object name or the top-level name of the
object.
If the object has a Selection rollout, click to turn
off the button of the active sub-object level.
Right-click the object, and then i n the Tools
1(upper-left)quadrantofthequadmenu,
choose Top-level.
Open anothe r command panel. This turns off
sub-object editing.
If you think youve turned off sub-object editing
but top-level object selection is still not restored, it
might be due to the following reasons:
