Name of problem
The 5601D, 5602D, 5602SW, and 4602SW IP telephones report PoE Class 1, although they are Class 2
devices.
Products affected
4600 Series IP Telephones – Series 4601, 4602D, 4602SW, and 560X Series IP Telephones
Problem description
The 5601D, starting with serial number 05GM05021115; 5602SW, beginning with 05GM04006001; and 5602D, starting
with 05GM13005005; IP telephones when registering with a layer 2 ethernet switch for PoE IEEE 802.3af, will report that
they are Class 1 devices, but electrically are Class 2 devices. This may cause issues, depending on the layer 2 ethernet
switch in use. All 4602D IP telephones starting with serial number 05GM12000001 and all 4602SW IP telephones starting
with serial number 05GM04000001 also report as Class 1 devices when registering to a layer 2 ethernet switch, although
they actually are Class 2 devices.
Resolution
This issue has been addressed in manufacturing with the following starting serial numbers: The 5601D telephone with a
serial number of 05GM27000001 or greater will report as a Class 2 device. The 5602D telephone with a serial number of
05GM19004738 or greater will report as a Class 2 device. The 5602SW telephone with a serial number of
05GM25005001 or greater will report as a Class 2 device. The 4602SW telephone with a serial number of
05GM20000001 or greater will report as a Class 2 device. A workaround is to manually administer the class of power on
the layer 2 switch. If this ability is not available on the ethernet switch, replace the telephone under warranty, if and only
if, the ethernet switch does not have the capability of adminstratively configuring for Class of power.
