Chapter 1 Symphony and Avid Composer Products Site Preparation This guide provides information about preparing your site for the installation of Symphony or Avid Composer Products hardware used with the Apple Dual 1-GHz PowerPC G4 Mini-Tower platform (G4 platform). By following these site preparation guidelines, you can help ensure a successful installation and avoid delays in getting your system up and running.
Site Planning Site Planning You need to be aware of environmental, electrical, size, and weight requirements as you select the location for your system. Be sure to meet the narrowest range of specifications in the following tables. For example, the audio I/O device (888 I/O™) can operate in an environment of 50°F to 104°F (10°C to 40°C), but the Meridien™ I/O box should only operate in an environment of 50°F to 95°F (10°C to 35°C).
Chapter 1 Symphony and Avid Composer Products Site Preparation You should also make sure the site meets the specifications in Table 1. It shows the environmental requirements for the major components of the system. Table 1 Operating Temperature Operating Humidity Storage Temperature Storage Humidity Power Macintosh® G4 50°F to 95°F (10°C to 35°C) 5% to 95% noncondensing –40°F to 116.
Site Planning Electrical Requirements Select your site with these electrical requirements in mind: • Make sure there is adequate power for each system component. This prevents the need for extension cords. • Make sure your site is away from major electrical equipment such as motors, air conditioners, or elevators. • Make sure the location is not subject to static electrical buildup. • Plug only your Avid equipment into the power strip.
Chapter 1 Symphony and Avid Composer Products Site Preparation Component Dimensions and Weight Table 3 lists the dimensions and weight of the system components. Make sure the surfaces where you place the equipment can accommodate the equipment’s size and weight. Table 3 Component Dimensions and Weight Component Height Width Depth Weight Power Macintosh G4 17.0 in (432 mm) 8.9 in (227 mm) 18.4 in (468 mm) 42 lb (19.1 kg)a Avid PCI Extender 7.0 in (178 mm) 19.0 in (483 mm) 17.
System Planning System Planning This section discusses your system setup. It presents information on clearance and the access you need to install and service your system. It also discusses system components and physical layout. Clearance and Access Install the system in a location that provides at least 12 inches (30.5 cm) of air clearance in front of and behind the system. Maintain 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1 cm) of clearance between components.
Chapter 1 Symphony and Avid Composer Products Site Preparation Installing Equipment in a Rack Some parts of Avid systems (for example, a MediaDock LVD) can be installed in a rack. When you install equipment in a rack you must take the following precautions: 18 • Elevated Operating Ambient Temperature — When installed in a closed or multiunit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment might be greater than the room ambient temperature.
System Planning Physical Layout A possible layout for each system is described and illustrated in the following sections. n The Avid PCI Extender and the Power Macintosh G4 platform can be rack mounted. See the Avid PCI Extender Rack-Mount Installation Instructions for details. Symphony or Media Composer Layout Figure 1 shows a possible physical layout for a Symphony or Media Composer system with additional peripheral components.

Check List Prepare for equipment delivery by performing any of the following tasks that are pertinent to your setup.
Chapter 1 Symphony and Avid Composer Products Site Preparation If your equipment configuration requires running long cables (to install components in different rooms, for example), install these cables before the Avid equipment arrives. Provide telephone access to allow a direct dial-in line for the client modem and easy access to Avid Customer Support. A telephone line for each client is recommended.
