CHAPTER 1 Avid Media Composer Products Site Preparation This guide provides information about preparing your site for the installation of Avid Media Composer products hardware for Release 8.0. By following these site preparation guidelines, you can help ensure a successful installation and avoid delays in getting your system up and running.
2 Site Planning You need to be aware of environmental, electrical, size, and weight requirements as you choose the location for your system. Be sure to meet the narrowest range of specifications in the following tables. For example, the Avid iS MediaDrive can operate in an environment of 32°F to 120°F (0°C to 49°C), but the digital linear tape (DLT) drive should only operate in an environment of 50°F to 104°F (10°C to 40°C).

8 System Planning This section discusses your system setup. It presents information on clearance and the access you need to install and service your system. It also discusses system components and physical layout. Clearance and Access Install the system in a location that provides at least 12 inches (30.5 cm) of air clearance in front of and behind the system. Maintain 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1 cm) of clearance between components.
9 Physical Layout A possible layout for each system is described and illustrated in the following sections. n The Avid PCI Extender and the Power Macintosh G3 platform can be rack mounted. See the Avid PCI Extender Rack-Mount Installation Instructions for details. Media Composer Layout Figure 1 shows a possible physical layout for a Media Composer system with additional peripheral components.

Preparing a Network The Ethernet network for your Avid systems can be either a standalone network or an existing in-house network. The network can be either 10BASE-T or 100BASE-T.
12 Avid is not responsible for installing or troubleshooting cables that you do not buy from Avid. Avid also does not provide network services and strongly suggests you use a local service provider to install and set up network connections. Connecting to a Network You can connect your Avid system to a network in several ways: • You can connect one or more systems to a new or existing Ethernet network to transfer files and communicate between systems. In this case, the Ethernet can be of any class.
13 Check List Prepare for equipment delivery by performing any of the following tasks that are pertinent to your setup. Avid System Note the name and telephone number of your authorized Avid support provider here, in case you need assistance before, during, or after installation.
