Chapter 49: Plug-In and Hardware Inserts 1095
Plug-In Formats
There are three plug-in formats supported by
Pro Tools (DSP, Native, and AudioSuite), two of
which can be used as real-time inserts, as follows:
DSP Plug-Ins
Provide real-time plug-in process-
ing using DSP-based processing with HDX sys-
tems only.
Native Plug-Ins
Provide real-time plug-in process-
ing using host-based processing.
AudioSuite Plug-Ins
Provide non-real-time (ren-
dered), file-based processing plug-ins for
Pro Tools.
Depending on your Pro Tools software, real-time
plug-ins can be used as follows:
HDX Systems
DSP and Native plug-ins can be used on audio,
Auxiliary Input, Master Fader, and Instrument
tracks.
Pro Tools Host-Based Systems
Native plug-ins can be used on audio, Auxiliary In-
put, Master Fader, and Instrument tracks.
Viewing Inserts
Both the Mix and Edit windows can be configured
to show or hide inserts A–E and F–J. Plug-In win-
dows provide complete access to plug-in controls.
To show (or hide) inserts, do one of the following:
In the Mix window (or Edit window), select
View > Mix Window (or Edit Window) > Inserts
A–E
or Inserts F–J.
Select Inserts A–E or Inserts F–J from the Edit
Window or Mix Window View selector.
For information on using AudioSuite plug-ins
in Pro Tools, see Chapter 42, “AudioSuite
Processing.”
With HDX systems, Native plug-ins may
use additional voices and introduce extra
latency based on the HW Buffer Size. See
“Inserting Native and DSP Plug-Ins on
Tracks” on page 1098.
For tips on maximizing Native plug-in per-
formance, see “Configuring
Pro Tools Software System Settings” on
page 90.
