Pillarbox/Letterbox
When the Pillarbox/Letterbox option is selected,
the picture scales to create the largest possible im-
age without cropping, while maintaining the origi-
nal aspect ratio of each video clip. When this op-
tion is selected and you have video media with
mixed aspect ratios on the online video track, or
video that does not match the aspect ratio of the
video window, there will be visible black borders
around video that uses a smaller aspect ratio than
the Video window. Additionally, this option can
result in a significant increase in CPU usage. If you
encounter performance problems, consider using
the
Stretch option.
Scrubbing the Video Track
Pro Tools lets you scrub video directly on a video
track. When scrubbing on a video track, only the
video scrubs (no audio plays). Video scrubbing is
displayed in the Video window. If video hardware
is connected, you can choose to scrub video with
external video monitoring as well as in the Video
window.
When scrubbing audio with a video track online,
both audio and video scrub synchronously.
To scrub a video track:
1 Select the Scrubber tool.
2 Click in the video track and drag the Scrubber.
Shuttling the Video Track
Shuttle Lock mode lets you use the numeric key-
pad to shuttle a video track and one or two audio
tracks forward or backwards at specific speeds.
Numbers 0 through 9 provide progressively faster
speeds, as follows:
To stop shuttling, press 0.
To increase the speed progressively towards nor-
mal speed, press numbers 1 through 4.
To shuttle at normal speed, press 5.
To increase the speed progressively faster than
normal speed, press numbers 6 through 9.
Only the main video track is shuttled. When multi-
ple audio tracks are selected, only the first two
tracks are shuttled.
To play the video track with the shuttle lock:
1 With Pro Tools Ultimate, make sure the Opera-
tion preference for Numeric Keypad mode is
not set to Shuttle (see “Operation Preferences”
on page 108).
2 Make sure the Video Online button in the video
track you want to scrub is set to an online (blue)
status.
3 With the Selector tool, click in the audio track
where you want playback to begin. To shuttle on
two tracks, Shift-click in a second audio track.
4 Press the Control (Mac) or Start key (Windows)
and a number on the numeric keypad: 0–9 (9 is
fastest, 5 is normal speed, and 0 stops shuttling).
Once Shuttle Lock mode is initiated, Fast Forward
and Rewind become highlighted in the Transport
window.
5 Press additional keys to change the playback
speed, or press Plus (+) or Minus (–) to switch
the playback direction (plus for forward, minus
for backward).
For information on enabling (or disabling)
video scrubbing with video hardware, see
“Enable Hardware During Scrub” on
page 1357.
To scrub with finer precision, press the Com-
mand key while scrubbing.
