Chapter 60: Working with Video in Pro Tools 1357
Pro Tools Video Preferences
The Video section of the Pro Tools Operation
Preferences provides the following options:
Enable GPU
Pro Tools video processing is done on the GPU
(Graphics Processing Unit) in order to free up the
CPU for Pro Tools audio and MIDI. If you are us-
ing a slower GPU and encounter poor video play-
back, you may want to disable this option and have
the video processing done on the CPU.
Prevent Tearing
When enabled, Pro Tools buffers video to prevent
visual artifacts with horizontal movement in situa-
tions where video sync does not match the screen
refresh rate. This options is not available when the
Enable GPU option is disabled.
Enable Hardware During Scrub
When selected, the Enable Hardware During Scrub
option lets you monitor video using video hard-
ware (such as Avid Mojo DX or Nitris DX video
peripherals) while scrubbing. When this option is
disabled, you can only monitor video in the
Pro Tools Video window while scrubbing. If you
experience performance issues when scrubbing
video while monitoring video using video hard-
ware, disable this option.
Play Start Latency
If you are working on a slower computer, set the
Play Start Latency setting to a higher value. The
range is from
1-Shortest to 5-Longest.
Video Tracks
Video tracks let you add or import video to the
Timeline, as follows:
Pro Tools lets you add or import one video track
per session, with a limit of one video playlist and
one Avid or QuickTime video file on that track.
Pro Tools Ultimate lets you add multiple video
tracks to the Timeline, with multiple video play-
lists and multiple video files per track.
Pro Tools Ultimate lets you mix QuickTime and
Avid video tracks in the Timeline (but not on the
same video track).
To create a video track in Pro Tools, do one of the
following:
Use File > Import to import a video file.
Drag a video file to the Timeline.
Use File > Import > Session Data to import a
session or AAF sequence containing a video
track.
For more information, see “Importing Video into
Pro Tools” on page 1367.

Pro Tools Ultimate:
1 Choose Track > New.
