1 CHA PTER 1 Product Overview Features and Benefits The LongView£ and LongView Companion£ Keyboard/Video/Mouse (KVM) extenders allow you to extend the distance between your server and your VGA monitor, PS/2 keyboard, PS/2 mouse, stereo speakers, microphone and serial port device. All of these signals can be extended up to 500 feet (152 meters) using a single inexpensive and commonly available CAT 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable - the type used in most Local Area Networks.
2 LongView x30 Series Installer/User Guide High resolution video The LongView and LongView Companion extenders support SVGA resolutions up to 1600 x 1200. See Appendix C for further details. Serial port The LongView and LongView Companion extenders can extend a server’s serial COM port to the desktop for use with devices such as touchscreens, modems or serial printers. Both models autoconfigure for any COM data rate up to 19.2 Kbps.

4 LongView x30 Series Installer/User Guide Safety Precautions To avoid potential video and/or keyboard problems when using Avocent products, please observe the following precautions: • If the building has 3-phase AC power, ensure that the server and monitor are on the same phase. For best results, they should be on the same circuit. • Use only Avocent-supplied cable to connect servers and KVM switches. Avocent warranties do not apply to damage resulting from user-supplied cable.

Chapter 2: Installation 7 To install a LongView transmitter: 1. Power down the server that will be included in your LongView extender system. 2. Unplug the peripherals (keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers with built-in amplifiers, microphone and serial device if applicable) from your server. 3. Prepare locations for your LongView extender equipment, server and peripherals. Place the transmitter near your server. Place the receiver near your monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and microphone. 4.

Chapter 2: Installation 9 WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to your equipment: - Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. The grounding plug is an important safety feature. - Plug the power cord into a grounded (earthed) outlet that is easily accessible at all times. - Disconnect the power from the unit by unplugging the power cord from either the electrical outlet or the unit. Chapter 2: Installation 11 DIP switch settings • Mouse movement: Switch 1 controls whether the mouse will activate a user during sharing mode. When this switch is On, the user must use the keyboard to activate the server. When this switch is Off, a user may take control of the server by moving the mouse. The default setting is Off. • Time-out Settings: Switches 2 and 3 control the time-out settings for the active user. When the active user has timed out, either user may take control of the server.
12 LongView x30 Series Installer/User Guide Configuring privacy settings for your LongView Companion extender The three position slide switch on the front of the LongView Companion transmitter is used to configure your privacy options. The privacy switch enables two users to share the server or allows you to lock out either the remote or local user. Appendices Appendix E: Troubleshooting Table E.1: Troubleshooting No status light Verify that the unit is turned on. Check the power cable. Turn off the unit and check the fuse located under the power cord connector. Contact Technical Support. No keyboard or video Check POWER indicators on the transmitter and receiver. They should be lit. If not, check each wall-mount power supply. Contact Technical Support. No video Ensure that the transmitter's video input cable is connected to the server.

Re-test the mouse by connecting it to the server and rebooting the server. If the mouse does not operate when plugged directly into the server, replace the mouse.
Appendices 23 Appendix F: Advanced Questions Is there anything I should do to optimize the video quality for my particular cable? LongView extender automatically tunes its circuits to optimize video performance for your specific cable length. However, for optimum performance at the maximum distances, particularly for high video resolutions, Comtran 2819 cable is recommended. CAT 5 cables have different twists-per-inch rates for the four pairs of wires within a cable to reduce crosstalk.

Appendices 25 Appendix G: CAT 5 Cable For optimal video, particularly at maximum distances, LongView extender works best with Comtran 2819 cable. This cable should be terminated to the EIA (TIA) 568B standard, which is commonly used for 10BaseT Ethernet. Sending KVM signals over a single CAT 5 cable limits LongView extender to a 500 foot range. There is not a specific limit on LongView extender refresh rates, but only rates to 80 Hz are specified. Refresh rate affects maximum extension distance.

1 CHAPITRE 1 Présentation du produit Caractéristiques et avantages Les systèmes d’extension KVM (clavier, moniteur et souris) LongView® et LongView Companion® permettent d’accroître la distance entre un serveur et un ensemble pouvant comprendre un moniteur VGA, un clavier PS/2, une souris PS/2, des haut-parleurs, un microphone et un périphérique sur voie série.

Aucune installation ou configuration logicielle n’est nécessaire. Les systèmes d’extension LongView et LongView Companion se raccordent au serveur de la même façon qu’un périphérique standard.

Chapitre 2 : Installation 9 AVERTISSEMENT : Pour éviter d’endommager le matériel et écarter tout risque d’électrocution : - Ne retirez pas la prise de terre. Cette prise est un élément de sécurité essentiel. - Branchez le cordon d’alimentation à une prise reliée à la terre et facilement accessible à tout moment. - Coupez l’alimentation de l’unité en débranchant le cordon d’alimentation au niveau de la prise ou directement sur l’unité. Chapitre 2 : Installation 11 Réglages du micro-interrupteur • Mouvement de la souris : l’interrupteur 1 contrôle l’activation de l’utilisateur en cas de mouvement de la souris en mode partagé. Si cet interrupteur est sur « On », l’utilisateur doit utiliser le clavier pour activer le serveur. Si cet interrupteur est sur « Off », l’utilisateur peut prendre le contrôle du serveur en déplaçant la souris. Le réglage par défaut est « Off ».
12 Guide d’installation et d’utilisation du LongView série x30 • Moniteur local : l’interrupteur 7 indique si un moniteur est présent sur la voie locale de l’émetteur LongView Companion. Le cas échéant, cet interrupteur doit être réglé sur « Off ». Dans le cas contraire, ce micro-interrupteur doit être réglé sur « On ». Le réglage par défaut est « Off ». • Mise à jour FLASH : l’interrupteur 8 permet de contrôler la mise à jour FLASH du système d’extension LongView Companion.

Connectez un câble UTP CAT5 standard (pouvant mesurer jusqu’à 150 m de long) à la voie marquée Remote I/O située à l’arrière de l’émetteur. Nous vous conseillons d’utiliser un câble Comtran 2819, Belden 1583A ou Belden 1585A pour obtenir une qualité vidéo optimale à une distance maximale.

Annexes 21 Annexe E : Dépannage Tableau E.1 : Dépannage Le voyant d’état est éteint Vérifiez que l’unité est sous tension. Vérifiez le cordon d’alimentation. Éteignez l’unité et vérifiez le fusible situé en dessous du connecteur du cordon d’alimentation. Contactez le service d’assistance technique. Pas de clavier ou de vidéo Vérifiez les voyants d’alimentation de l’émetteur et du récepteur. Ils doivent être allumés. Dans le cas contraire, vérifiez la source d’alimentation murale.
22 Guide d’installation et d’utilisation du LongView série x30 Pas de souris Assurez-vous que le câble de la souris est connecté à la voie adéquate sur le récepteur puis redémarrez le serveur. Pour vérifier de nouveau la souris, connectez-la directement au serveur puis redémarrez celuici. Si, une fois connectée au serveur, la souris ne fonctionne toujours pas, remplacez-la.
Annexes 23 Annexe F : Questions techniques Comment optimiser la qualité vidéo obtenue avec un câble spécifique ? Le système d’extension LongView configure automatiquement ses circuits afin d’optimiser les performances vidéo en fonction de la longueur du câble utilisé. Cependant, pour optimiser ces performances à une distance maximale, notamment pour les hautes résolutions vidéo, nous vous recommandons d’utiliser un câble Comtran 2819.

Annexes 25 Annexe G : Câble CAT 5 Pour obtenir une qualité vidéo optimale, en particulier aux distances maximales, il est recommandé d’utiliser un câble Comtran 2819 avec le système d’extension LongView. Ce câble doit être raccordé conformément à la norme EIA (TIA) 568B, généralement appliquée pour les réseaux Ethernet 10BaseT. La transmission de signaux KVM via un câble CAT 5 unique limite la distance d’extension du système LongView à 152,4 m.
