To begin the ranging process, the WMU transmits a ranging request to the WMTS. Upon
receipt, the WMTS sends a ranging response back to the WMU. Once initial ranging is
completed, a similar ranging process occurs periodically to continuously adjust frequency,
timing and power level.
5.3.4 IP Layer Establishment
Once timing, frequency, and power are set, the WMU must establish IP connectivity. The IP
address is established by use of a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), which
assigns an IP Address to the WMU. DHCP is administered by either the operator or some
other service provider.
5.3.5 Registration
The registration process begins with the WMU downloading a configuration file from the
server through the use of TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol). This file contains operating
information for the WMU, such as downstream and upstream frequencies, etc. These service
provisioning items are taken into account when the subscriber initiates wireless modem
service.
