Appendix G - Bandwidth
As different networks have different characteristics and different amounts of bandwidth
available, the AXIS 250S’s video and audio settings may need to be adjusted to suit the
prevailing conditions.
The Video Bit Rate
The video bit rate describes how much video data is transferred per second, and can be
configured from 0.25 - 8 Mbit/s. Whether or not you should use the available highest rate
depends on the answers to a few questions:
Does your application actually need a video stream at the highest quality? Try viewing the
live video stream and uploading MPEG-2 files using several different bit rates. Using the
lowest acceptable bit rate is recommended.
Are there other bandwidth-dependent services running on the same network? Will the bit
rate used by the AXIS 250S cause problems for these services?
How many clients are likely to be viewing the video stream at any one time? The maximum
number of viewing clients on a 100 Mbit switched local area network is 3.
Image Quality vs Bit Rate
The quality of the video stream in relation to the bit rate can be roughly illustrated by the
graph below.
