Data Logging
9.1 Overview
Data logging is used to gather system relevant data and store it for later retrieval. Several Morn-
ingstarproductswillperformbasicdataloggingtoonboardmemory.Pleaserefertospecicprod-
uct documentation for information on the internal logging performed by these units.
For more advanced logging, (i.e. specifying what data values to be logged, and at what interval)
the use of either MSView
TM
, a custom designed MODBUS
TM
application, or a 3rd party data ac-
quisition service is necessary.
9.2 MSView
TM
The MSView
TM
software has the capability of performing high-resolution data logging for any
numberofvariablesavailableinthesystem.Loggingintervalsarecustomdenedbytheuser
andcanbespecieddowntoaminimumofonesecond(meaningdataiscollectedatamaxi-
mum rate of once per second).
While logging, MSView
TM
continuouslysavestheloglein.csv(commaseparatedvalues)for-
mat. This very common format is compatible with nearly all spreadsheet and database programs.
If you are using a controller with the capability of logging to onboard memory, MSView
TM
will ex-
tract this data from the controller every time you establish a connection to it.
9.3 MODBUS
TM
Application
Morningstar controllers use the MODBUS
TM
protocol to communicate with 3rd party hardware,
such as PCs and PLCs. A programming savvy user can create applications which will talk to
Morningstar controllers using MODBUS
TM
and retrieve system information from the unit.
Morningstar products capable of communications with a 3
rd
party device have corresponding
MODBUS
TM

brief overview of the protocol, the functions supported, and data register locations for the model
you are using.
