How do I detect and prevent DKA?
DKA is a condition that happens when a severe lack of insulin causes
the body to break down fat to use as energy. To avoid DKA make
sure you check your blood sugar often, 2-4 times a day. Routine
checking helps identify DKA before it develops.
Common causes of DKA are illness and high blood glucose. It
results because there is not enough insulin in the body to control
blood glucose. If you are at risk for DKA check the IDD Status on
your Remote often to ensure it is delivering insulin.
Signs and symptoms of DKA:
• Extreme thirst
• Frequent urination
• Feeling tired
• Nausea, vomiting, or
abdominal pain
• Diculty breathing
• Fruity odor on breath
• Confusion
• High blood glucose levels
• High ketone levels
in the urine
