5.1 Basics of Lighting Engineering
Good lighting and good illumination are the basic requirements for people to act
safely and to prevent accidents at working places or during leisure activities.
Type of Room Nominal Lighting
Storage rooms 100
Canteens 200
Toilets 200
Sanitary rooms 500
Floors 150
Offices 500
Technical drawing office 750
Conference rooms 500

Traffic routes in buildings, (stairs) 100
Traffic routes in buildings (transport belts) 100
Further standard values are listed in DIN EN 12464-1 or in special table books.
The above mentioned values are understood as standard values. They always refer
to general conditions with horizontal working surfaces at a height above ground of
0.85 m, for traffic routes at a height above ground of max. 0.2m (middle line).
References are valid for a mean ageing condition of a lighting system.
The objective of calculating illumination levels is to determine the number of lamps
necessary and, thus, the required wattage. Although a detailed calculation of illumi-
nation values is not feasible within the constraints of this leaflet, it is possible to pro-
vide the reader with a simple, approximate example, using the watt rule (please refer
to calculation example).
