4. Choose the “quietest” channel for your wireless network
Inlocationswherehomesorofficesareclosetogether,suchas
apartmentbuildingsorofficecomplexes,theremaybewireless
networksnearbythatcanconflictwithyours.UsetheSiteSurvey
capabilitiesofyourWirelessLANUtilitytolocateanyotherwireless
networks(seepage16ofthismanual),andmoveyourWirelessRouter
(orAccessPoint)andcomputerstoachannelasfarawayfromother
networksaspossible.
Experimentwithmorethanoneoftheavailablechannels,inorderto
findtheclearestconnectionandavoidinterferencefromneighboring
cordlessphonesorotherwirelessdevices.
5. Secure connections, VPNs, and AOL
Secureconnectionsareconnectionsthattypicallyrequireausername
andpassword,andareusedwheresecurityisimportant.Secure
connectionsinclude:
• VirtualPrivateNetwork(VPN)connections,oftenusedtoconnect
remotelytoanofficenetwork
• The“BringYourOwnAccess”programfromAmericaOnline
(AOL),whichletsyouuseAOLthroughbroadbandprovidedby
anothercableorDSLservice
• Moston-linebankingwebsites
• Manycommercialwebsiteswhichrequireausernameand
passwordtoaccessyouraccount
Secureconnectionscanbeinterruptedbyacomputer’spower
managementsetting,whichcausesitto“gotosleep.”Thesimplest
solutiontoavoidthisistosimplyreconnectbyre-runningtheVPNor
AOLsoftware,orbyre-loggingintothesecurewebsite.
Asecondalternativeistochangeyourcomputer’spower
managementsettingssoitdoesnotgotosleep;however,thismay
notbeappropriateforportablecomputers.Tochangeyourpower
managementsettingunderWindows,seethe“PowerOptions”itemin
theControlPanel.
