Overview About this book This book provides you the main information about various components in your Joybook and demonstrates how to use them. The following are the major chapters of this book.
Typographics Control Panel options mentioned are organized by the default category view. Getting started Depending on the model of your Joybook, the appearance may be different from the illustrations shown in this manual. Package contents Getting your Joybook ready for use 1. Installing the battery pack Before using your Joybook for the first time, please check if you have all the items with you. For details about what should be included in the package, refer to the Product Specification label on the product carton.
2. Connecting the power a. Connect the power cord to the power adapter. b. Connect the power adapter to the power jack on your Joybook. c. Connect the power cord to a power outlet. The Joybook will automatically start charging the battery. • The battery pack is shipped with low charge from the factory. You can still use your Joybook while the battery is charging. • Power systems and plug types may vary depending on your country/region.
4. Performing initial setup Press the Power button to start up your Joybook, the Power button indicator then lights up in blue. And then follow the onscreen instructions to complete the initial Windows 7 setup. • Your Joybook works best with Windows 7. Installing other operating systems that have not been tested is not recommended, and may not only void your warranty but also affect the functionality of your Joybook. • The actual operating system that comes with your Joybook may vary.
Expanding the capabilities of your Joybook Pay attention to the plug direction when making the following connections. Incorrect direction may cause damage to the device. Access local area network (LAN) by connecting a network cable to the LAN port of your Joybook. Connect an external display device (such as a monitor or projector) to the 15-pin D-sub video jack of your Joybook with a VGA cable. To switch to the external display device or simultaneous display, press the + hotkey combination.
Connect a separate audio or video device that has an HDMI interface, such as an HDMI-capable display device, projector, AV receiver, or any compatible device. Insert an ExpressCard/34 module or ExpressCard/54 module to further expand the capabilities of your Joybook. For details, refer to "HDMI-output port (Version 1.3a; Type A connector)" on page 13 and "Using the HDMI-output port" on page 32.
Connect an earphone to the audio output jack to output sounds. Connect USB peripherals to the USB port(s) of your Joybook. Connect a microphone to the microphone input jack to record sounds. For example, do not use the Joybook in bed where a blanket may inadvertently cover the vents and block the airflow. (6) HDMI-output port (Version 1.3a; Type A connector) HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the digital interface standard for connecting highdefinition (HD) consumer electronics components, which enhances the quality of your HD experience. With this HDMI-output port, you can connect a separate audio or video device that has an HDMI interface, such as an HDMI-capable display device, projector, AV receiver, or any compatible device.
Right side view (4) eSATA port Connects an external hard disk or a device that has an eSATA interface to the eSATA port of your Joybook. (5) DVD Super-Multi drive (varying by model) The type of the optical drive varies by model, and the support of disc types depends on the optical drive that comes with your Joybook. Getting started with Windows 7 If you are using Windows 7 on your Joybook, you may want to find information about the following topics. Refer to the user manual that is supplied with your operating system, or search from Help and Support in the Start menu. Turning off Joybook properly or selecting other options • How to set the system region settings, date, and time. • How to set system administrator and user security logins and settings. • How to install, setup and run anti-virus software.
5. Double-click Lid close action and Power button action to expand these items. 6. To specify the action to take when you close the lid of your Joybook or press the Power button, click On battery or Plugged in, and then select the desired setting from the drop-down list. Using Windows Mobility Center Windows Mobility Center is a convenient location where you can quickly access your Joybook's settings, such as volume, battery status, and wireless network, etc.
Using your Joybook Using the touchpad (1) (2) (3) The touchpad with its buttons is a pointing device that functions as an optional external mouse, which can perform navigation, scrolling and selection functions. Using the keyboard Function hotkeys You can use the function hotkeys to access commonly used functions or make quick settings. To use the hotkeys, press and hold the (Function) key at the lower left corner of the keyboard, and then press the desired hotkey (highlighted below in red). Using built-in wireless connectivity With the built-in wireless connectivity of your Joybook, you can access other wireless network enabled devices (such as Access Point network stations, Notebook computers, Personal Digital Assistants, or digital projectors) wirelessly without the constraints of network cables. 3. Click the WLAN icon in the notification area (located at the lower right corner of the desktop). A list of available wireless networks will be displayed.
there will be a successful message showing that you have connected to the network. • To connect to some networks that require security authentication, you may have to undergo another authorization process and enter username and password. For details, please consult your network administrator. • For more information, refer to Start > Help and Support in Windows 7. • For data security, it is strongly recommended to connect to security-enabled wireless networks whenever possible.
Using Bluetooth (optional accessory) The Bluetooth function allows you to get connected to various devices and services that support Bluetooth transmission. You can connect wirelessly without the need for data cables when printing documents, synchronizing your Personal Information Management (PIM) data with your Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or another Personal Computer (PC), mobile phone or even sharing a network connection. 3.
4. Right-click and select Add a Device. Wait for a while and the found active Bluetooth devices will show. 5. Select a Bluetooth device and click Next. 6. Windows generates a random code number shown on the screen. Type in this code number into the Bluetooth device your Joybook is trying to connecting to. • For details about how to activate the device's Bluetooth function, please refer to its documentation.
7. Once the Bluetooth device is connected to your Joybook, the following dialog box shows. Click Close. Meanwhile, another dialog box (also shown below) opens and provides more options (available options may vary depending on the type of the Bluetooth device). • The code number is used for pairing and identifying Bluetooth devices. • The code entered on your device and another device with Bluetooth connectivity must be identical.
Sending a file to a Bluetooth device 3. Click Send files to your phone (S88). If your Bluetooth device is capable of sending and receiving data, such as a mobile handset, you can use the Bluetooth connectivity to transfer data wirelessly between your Bluetooth device and Joybook. 1. Right-click and select Show Bluetooth Devices. 4. Click Browse Files to select files to transfer, and then click Send. 2. In this example, double-click the S88 icon (the S88 handset can transfer data via Bluetooth).
5. The selected files are now sending to the S88 handset. Once the transfer is done, the Sending Items dialog box will automatically close. The example shown above is specifically for connecting to a mobile handset. When connecting to other types of a Bluetooth device, the steps may vary. Downloaded from LpManual.
Using the HDMI-output port HDMI supports uncompressed video data transmission between compatible devices. With the HDMI-output port on your Joybook, you can connect a separate audio or video device that has an HDMI interface, such as an HDMI-capable display device, projector, AV receiver, or any compatible device. To make the connection, you need to purchase an HDMI cable separately, available in most electronics stores.
Adjusting the video output The screen resolution of your Joybook may not be supported on your connected HDMI-capable LCD TV. Therefore, you may encounter situations like a blank or flickering screen. To fix the problem, refer to the documentation that came with your TV, or try to adjust the screen refresh rate of your Joybook by following the steps below. 1. Right-click on the desktop, and then select Screen resolution. Downloaded from LpManual.

Determining the display settings for the LCD TV 3. Select Basic and click Next. The desktop of your Joybook may not fit into the connected HDMI-capable TV due to different aspect ratio. You can follow the steps below for proper display adjustment. 1. Switch the image to the LCD TV by pressing the + hotkey combination until the Joybook desktop is displayed only on the TV screen. 2. 5. Select the main and the second display devices, and then click Next. 6. Select a desktop mode you wan to use. In this example, select Duplicate and click Next. 7. Click Finish. Downloaded from LpManual.
Using the built-in webcam Your Joybook comes with a built-in webcam on the inside top of the lid, above the screen. With the webcam, you can capture still images, record videos, and chat online. Activating WebCam Companion 3 To launch "WebCam Companion 3", select Start > All Programs > ArcSoft WebCam Companion 3 > Launch Utility. You can install a free instant messaging program provided to start video chat online, or activate "WebCam Companion 3" by clicking Launch Arcsoft WebCam Companion.
Using WebCam Companion 3 "WebCam Companion 3" features four modules below that helps you get the most out of your webcam. Switching to different modules On the top left corner of the Main screen in any module, there are two icons that allow you to switch to another module easily. returns to the Home screen to select other modules. shows the current module. To switch to another module, click the arrow to display other modules, and select a desired one.
By default, image and video files are saved under Documents > WebCam Media > Capture. • The “Burst” and “Record Video” functions are available when the snapshot resolution is set to 640 x 480 pixels or lower. • The snapshot resolution is set to 320 x 240 by default. To change the setting, click the arrow next to the resolution and select from the drop-down list. Photo Booth You can select and personalize the selected frames added to your pictures.
2. Under the Video Proc Amp tab, change PowerLine Frequency to 50Hz. Before you start using "Magic-i Visual Effects", click and input the values to change the settings appropriately by dragging the scroll bars. You can also click Auto in each setting and the program will set the calculated values automatically. Available settings may vary by module.
Using SRS 3. Click the SRS tab and customize the options as needed. You can enable or disable SRS TruSurround HD and CS Headphone technologies in the Speakers Properties dialog box: 1. Right-click and select Sounds. 2. Click the Playback tab > Speakers > Properties. Downloaded from LpManual.
Using BIOS setup BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is a layer of software, called firmware, that translates instructions from other layers of software into instructions that the Joybook hardware can understand. The BIOS settings are needed by the Joybook to identify the types of installed devices and establish special features. BIOS settings are specific to your Joybook hardware. Do NOT change existing BIOS settings unless you are sure they need to be changed, and are aware of the consequences.
• Keyboard instructions for moving around and making selections. Navigating the BIOS setup screen Keyboard information can be found on the bottom column of the screen. A brief description of keyboard usage is listed below: Main menu The Main menu contains the basic configuration settings of the system and shows some system information, such as the BIOS version, system date/time, system memory, etc. • System Time: allows you to set the time of the system.
• Password on boot: When you select Enabled, the Supervisor Password is required whenever starting up your Joybook. Select Disabled if you do not want to use the Supervisor Password. Boot menu The Boot menu contains the boot configuration settings of the system and sets the sequence of boot devices. The system will try to boot from the first device. If it is not available, the system will try the next boot device. a. Use or to select a device. b.
Recovering your system using QDataTrove • QDataTrove works on factory-installed Windows operating systems only. • It is strongly recommended to create Factory Recovery DVD immediately once your Joybook is ready for use. Refer to "Creating a Factory Recovery CD/DVD" on page 49 for details. Introduction to QDataTrove Your Joybook may come pre-installed with QDataTrove depending on your purchased model.
How to launch QDataTrove You can launch QDataTrove either from Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) or Windows 7. Launching QDataTrove from Windows PE only allows you to access partial functions of QDataTrove. To utilize the full functionality of QDataTrove, launch this application from Windows 7 instead. Launching QDataTrove from Windows PE 1. Start your Joybook. 2. During system startup, press the + keys when you see "Press Alt + F10 to enter QDataTrove 3...
4. A confirmation message appears. To proceed with the operation, click Yes. 5. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to complete the operation. Backing up your system into a disc QDataTrove allows you to back up your system drive (C: drive) into CD/DVD discs. It makes an exact copy of your entire system drive (C: drive), including the operating system, installed software programs, registry settings, etc. To perform the operation, follow the steps below: 1. In QDataTrove, click the Back up tab. 2.
2. Click the button to select Create a Restore Point. 3. To create a restore point manually, click the button and follow the remaining on-screen instructions to add a new restore point. Restoring your system The Restore feature helps to bring your Joybook back to its factory default settings or to an earlier state. In order to restore, you need to back up your system drive, or create a restore point first.
2. A System Restore wizard then appears on the screen. Follow the step-by-step on-screen instructions to complete system restore. For more information about System Restore, refer to Start > Help and Support in Windows 7. Reinstalling bundled applications and drivers QDataTrove allows you to reinstall the applications and drivers that are bundled with the Joybook you purchased. 1. Click the button to select Reinstall Applications and Drivers. 2.
5. The disc burning process starts. A Create Factory Recovery CD/DVD window appears on the screen and displays the current status. Please note that the burning process cannot be interrupted once started. 6. Continue to create a factory default Application and Driver DVD. Repeat Step 2 to Step 5 to complete the disc burning process. 7. After disc burning finishes (the progress bar shows 100% completion), click at the upper right corner of the window to proceed. 8. Click Exit > Yes to leave the application.

Store the discs in a safe place for future use. Store the USB flash disk in a safe place for future use. For more information about how to use QDataTrove, refer to the online help. Creating bootable USB flash disk You can use QDataTrove to create a bootable USB flash disk to recover your system to the factory settings.
Protecting your Joybook from viruses and other security threats Your Joybook may come pre-installed with an anti-virus software, which can help you avoid unexpected destruction of your precious data in the Joybook and keeps your privacy against any unauthorized access from other computers. The anti-virus software protects your computer against Internet threats, such as viruses, Spyware, hackers, and spam.
Upgrading or replacing the memory You can replace the existing memory module with a highercapacity one. Before you upgrade or replace memory, please check on the BenQ web site to determine the module which can be used, or contact BenQ distributor or customer service center. It is recommended that you take your Joybook to the BenQ distributor or customer service center for the upgrade or memory replacement. For details about the limit of maximum memory, refer to the product information from http://www.BenQ.
3. Slide “Battery retainer A” to the right (1) and, while still holding the retainer, remove the battery from its compartment (2). 4. The memory cover is secured with several screws (indicated by the arrows shown below). Use a screwdriver to remove them. 5. Remove the back cover. Ground yourself to your Joybook with professional grounding equipment like an anti-static wristband, or touch the metal surface on the inside of your Joybook to discharge any static electricity. 6. Align the memory module with the slot, and then insert it. When inserting, pay attention to the direction of the memory module. 7. Push the memory module in place. • Handle the memory module by its edge and avoid touching the contacts.

FAQ and troubleshooting The chapter describes situations that you may encounter during use of the Joybook, along with basic troubleshooting steps. If you are not able to resolve the issue, contact a nearest BenQ service center for assistance immediately. The battery icon in the notification area on my Joybook suggests that the battery is fully charged. However, when I check it from the Power Manager in Windows, the battery level is only about 95%-99%.
What should I do if the battery gets hot in my Joybook? Take the battery out and let it cool down for a while. If the problem persists when the battery is inserted again into your Joybook later, the battery could be defective and it may need to be replaced. Consult your BenQ dealer for help and maintenance. I have pressed the Power button, but my Joybook cannot start up. Check the Power button indicator.
4. The Properties window will pop up. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Speed & Duplex item on the left. 5. Select the appropriate mode according to the settings of your LAN service from the Value drop-down menu on the right, and then click OK. If the situation persists, press + and turn on Bluetooth only to disable WLAN to reduce interference of different network connection modes. I have a problem setting up wireless network.
1. Press + R to display the Run dialog box. 2. Type "msconfig" in the Open field. The system configuration utility will appears. 3. Click the Startup tab, and then uncheck any task that is unwanted. 4. Click Apply > OK. Restart your Joybook. • Remove programs from the Startup folder. Removing programs from the Startup folder also helps prevent programs from running when Windows starts up. To do so, follow the steps below: 1. Right-click anywhere in the open area on the desktop and select New > Folder.
2. Right-click the hard disk's icon and select Properties. 3. Click the Tools tab and then the Defragment Now button. 4. Click the Defragment Now button. It may take a long time to complete. If Disk Defragmenter start itself over and over, it means that some hidden background software program is still accessing the hard disk. Restart your Joybook and try again. USB devices quit working unexpectedly in Windows 7.
Why is the hard disk capacity displayed by the OS different from its nominated capacity? You may have discovered that the capacity of a 10GB hard disk becomes 9GB when displayed from the OS, and 20GB becomes 19GB, etc. The bigger the capacity, the bigger the difference. It is because hard disk manufacturers and OS developers calculate hard disk capacity in different ways. As a result, the nominated capacity is different from the exact capacity displayed by the OS.

Why does my Joybook seem to turn off itself after a certain period of inactivity? This is the default setting of the Joybook to conserve battery power. The Joybook is configured to use the power saving feature. You can go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options to select your preferred power plan.
How can I judge if my LCD panel is out of order and what should I do if this happens? If your Joybook cannot display images at the default resolution, please visit the BenQ web site to download and update the latest Joybook display drivers. Contact your BenQ dealer if you encounter the following situations: • The screen flickers when the system starts up normally. • Fonts displayed on the screen are unclear and strange codes appear. • There is no display when the hard disk is running normally.
Cleaning and battery maintenance Battery maintenance Cleaning your Joybook 1. Fully charge/discharge battery up to 4 cycles before achieving full capacity of a new battery. 2. Fully discharge and then fully charge the battery every two to three weeks for battery conditions. 3. Remove from the device and stored in a cool, dry, clean place if the battery will not be in use for a month or longer and recharge the battery after a storage period. 4. Do not short-circuit.
