Most child seats are detected by the system, especially child seats required by the NHTSA at the time of vehicle production. After mounting a child seat, ensure that the indicator lamp for the front passenger airbag is lit. It indicates that the child seat has been detected and that the front passenger airbags are deactivated.
Technology for driving comfort and safety As a supplementary system to the reinforced windshield frame, the rollover protection system ensures that the necessary headroom is maintained for all vehicle occupants. Always keep the area of movement of the rollover protection system clear. In minor accidents, you are protected by the fastened safety belt and, depending on accident severity, by the safety belt tensioner and multi-phase airbag retention system.

Things to remember when driving Things to remember when driving Break-in period Moving parts need breaking-in time to adjust to each other. Please follow the instructions below in order to achieve the optimal service life and economy of operation for your vehicle. Engine and differential Always obey all official speed limits. Up to 1,200 miles/2,000 km Drive at varying engine and road speeds, but do not exceed an engine speed of 4500 rpm or a road speed of 100 mph/160 km/h.
Coasting When approaching a red light, take your foot off the accelerator and coast to a stop in the highest applicable gear. On a downhill slope, take your foot off the accelerator and coast in a suitable gear. The fuel supply is interrupted when coasting. Switch off the engine during lengthy stops Switch off the engine when stopping for lengthy periods, e.g. at traffic lights, railroad crossings or in traffic congestions. You achieve fuel savings even if standing time is as short as approx. 4 seconds.
Things to remember when driving The risk of hydroplaning increases with declining tread depth on the tires, refer also to Minimum tread depth on page 206. Driving through water Drive through water on the road only if it is not deeper than 1 ft/30 cm, and then only at walking speed at the most. Otherwise, the vehicle's engine, the electrical systems and the transmission may be damaged.
Make sure that no liquids are spilled or leak from their containers in the cargo bay, as this could result in damage to the vehicle.< 6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, part of the load from your trailer will be transferred to your vehicle. Consult the manual for transporting a trailer to determine how this may reduce the available cargo and luggage load capacity of your vehicle. The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kg or YYY lbs.
Things to remember when driving Convertible weight or either of the approved axle loads, refer to page 233, as excessive loads can pose a safety hazard, and may also place you in violation of traffic safety laws. Heavy or hard objects should not be carried loose inside the car, since they could be thrown around, for example as a result of heavy braking, sudden swerves, etc., and endanger the occupants.
At a glance Fasten roof-mounted cargo correctly and securely to prevent it from shifting or falling off during the trip. Drive smoothly. Avoid sudden acceleration and braking maneuvers. Take corners gently. Controls Rear-mounted luggage rack* Driving tips A rear-mounted luggage rack is available as a special accessory for your BMW. Comply with the directions given in the installation instructions.

Wheels and tires Wheels and tires Tire inflation pressures Information for your safety It is not merely the tires' service life, but also driving comfort and, to a great extent, driving safety that depend on the condition of the tires and the maintenance of the specified tire pressure. Check the tire inflation pressure regularly and correct it, if necessary: at least twice a month and before starting long trips.
At a glance Coupe: tire inflation pressures for the 128i Tire size Pressure specifications in psi/kPa Traveling speeds up to a max.
Wheels and tires Convertible: tire inflation pressures for the 128i Tire size Pressure specifications in psi/kPa Traveling speeds up to a max. of 100 mph / 160 km/h Traveling speeds including those exceeding 100 mph / 160 km/h All pressure specifications in the table are indicated in psi/kilopascal with cold tires.
Tread wear Traction AA A B C Temperature A B C Speed code letter The tread wear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one-half (1γ) times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100.
Wheels and tires heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corresponds to a level of performance which all passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109.
The symbol identifying Run-Flat Tires is a circle with the letters RSC on the sidewall. Run-Flat Tires comprise a conditionally selfsupporting tire and a special rim. The reinforcement in the sidewalls ensures that the tire can continue to be used subject to certain restrictions, even if depressurized. For information on continuing to drive with a flat tire, refer to Indication of a flat tire on page 84.
Wheels and tires Recommended tire brands Swapping wheels between axles BMW advises against swapping wheels between the front and rear axles, even if all tires have the same size, as this could impair driving characteristics. If the tires are of mixed sizes, swapping wheels between the axles is not permissible. Snow chains* Certain makes of tire are recommended by BMW for each tire size. They are marked with a clearly visible BMW designation on the sidewall of the tire.
