Passenger safety systems Airbags Protective effect The front airbags supplement the threepoint safety belts by providing additional protection in the event of a severe frontal collision in which the protection afforded by the belts alone may no longer be sufficient. The side airbags provide protection in the event of a collision from the side. They help support the respective seat occupant's upper body. For information on the correct sitting posture, refer to page 52.
Airbags At all times, occupants should sit upright and be properly restrained – infants and small children in appropriate child-restraint systems; larger children and adults using the safety belts. Never let an occupant's head rest near or on a side airbag because the inflating airbag could cause a serious or fatal injury. Please note that the word Airbag imprinted on the door trim panel indicates the airbag's location.
Airbags This is the right way a larger child should sit wearing the seat belt when rear side airbags are provided. Maintenance Controls If there is a system malfunction, there is a risk that the airbags will not be triggered within their normal response range, even if the level of impact would normally have triggered them. Have your BMW center inspect the airbag system immediately.
Transporting children safely To avoid undesired movement at high speeds, always store the rear safety belts in their retainers when they are not in use.< Commercially available child-restraint systems are designed to be secured with a lap belt or with the lap belt portion of a combination lap/shoulder belt. Improperly or inadequately installed restraint systems can increase the risk of injury to children. Always read and follow the instructions that come with the system.

Special operating instructions 124 Break-in procedures To ensure that your vehicle continues to provide maximum economy throughout an extended service life, we request that you devote careful attention to the following instructions. Tires Engine and differential Owing to technical factors associated with their manufacture, tires do not achieve their full traction potential until an initial break-in period has elapsed. We thus ask you to drive with extra care during the first 200 miles/300 km.
Braking with ABS Cornering Brake Control (CBC) If you are in a situation that requires full braking, you will exploit the full benefits of ABS system if you apply maximum pedal pressure – panic stop. CBC is an advanced engineering development of ABS. When braking during cornering with high lateral acceleration, or when braking during a lane change, vehicle stability is improved and the steering response is enhanced.
Brake system Brake fluid level If the brake fluid level is too low and brake pedal travel has become longer, there may be a defect in one of the brake system's hydraulic circuits. Proceed to the nearest authorized BMW center. It may be necessary to apply higher levels of pressure to the pedal when stopping and braking distances may also be longer. Please remember to adapt your driving style accordingly.
Hardtop* 127 To facilitate hardtop installation or removal, you can obtain a specially designed hardtop lift* or hardtop rack* at your BMW center. Controls 1. Lower the side windows completely and flip the sun blinds down. If necessary, remove the antenna rod to avoid any damage 2. Hardtop* 7. Position the hardtop onto the supports with the help of a second person. Be sure to put the mountings exactly into the proper brackets Lift the hardtop carefully. Be extremely careful not to shift the seals. Seals that have been shifted out of place or actually pulled out cause leaks.< 4. Open the two locking levers at the front. Press on the buttons to do so. The levers will release slightly. Open the levers as far as possible 5.
Wheels and tires Tire condition Information for your safety wall with TWI – Tread Wear Indicator. At a tread depth of 1/16 in / 1.6 mm, the indicators signal that the legally permissible wear limit has been reached. The factory-approved tires are matched to your vehicle and have been selected to provide optimum safety and driving comfort when used properly. Tread depth should not be allowed to go below 1/8 in / 3 mm, even though the legally specified minimum tread depth is 1/16 in / 1.6 mm.
Tire condition Tire replacement Do not drive on a deflated – flat – tire unless your vehicle is equipped with Run Flat tires. A flat tire greatly impairs steering and braking response, and can lead to complete loss of control over the vehicle. Avoid overloading the vehicle so that the permitted load on the tires is not exceeded. Overloading can lead to overheating and internal tire damage. The ultimate result can assume the form of a sudden air loss.
Tire replacement DOT... 3603 indicates that the tire was manufactured in week 36 of the year 2003. BMW recommends the replacement of all tires – including the spare tire* – when the tires are no more than 6 years old, even if a tire life of 10 years is possible. Uniform Tire Quality Grading Quality grades can be found where applicable on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width.
Wheel and tire combinations Winter tires The right choice Storage Choosing the right tire BMW recommends using only wheels and tires that have been approved by BMW for your particular vehicle model, as otherwise body contact and serious accidents can result despite the use of the same nominal size, e.g. due to manufacturing tolerances.
Winter tires 133 You cannot mount snow chains with the following tires: Tire condition, tire pressure 225/40 R 18 At tread depths below approx. 3/16 in / 4 mm, winter tires display a perceptible decrease in their ability to cope with winter driving conditions, and should be replaced in the interest of safety. 245/40 R 17 225/45 R 17 255/35 R 18 Do not initialize the Flat Tire Monitor after mounting snow chains to the tires.
In the engine compartment 134 Hood To release To open To close Pull the lever located under the lefthand side of the instrument panel. Pull the release handle and open the hood. Allow the hood to fall from a height of about 1 ft/30 cm so that it audibly engages. Do not attempt to service your vehicle if you do not have the required technical background.
