At a glance Adjustments Always maintain an adequate distance between yourself and the airbags. Always grip the steering wheel on the rim, with your hands in the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions, to minimize the risk of injury to the hands or arms in the event of the airbag being triggered off. No one and nothing is to come between the airbags and the seat occupant. Do not use the cover of the front airbag on the front passenger side as a storage area.
Adjustments Seats Backrest Note before adjusting Never attempt to adjust your seat while the vehicle is moving. The seat could respond with unexpected movement, and the ensuing loss of vehicle control could lead to an accident. On the front passenger seat as well, do not incline the backrest too far to the rear while the vehicle is being driven, otherwise there is a danger in the event of an accident of sliding under the safety belt, eliminating the protection normally provided by the belt.

Also, vehicles traveling in a staggered manner on a highway may cause a delay in the system's reaction to a vehicle in front of you or may cause the system to react to a vehicle actually in the lane next to you. Always be ready to take action or apply the brakes if necessary. While active cruise control is capable of braking your vehicle automatically when you approach a slower vehicle ahead, it is important to be aware that the ability of the system to apply the brakes is also limited, e.g.
Driving In approaching a curve, it is possible that active cruise control would react briefly to a vehicle in the adjacent lane. In addition, the system can sense if your vehicle is in a curve and may not accelerate. If your vehicle decelerates in either case, you can choose to overcome the deceleration by briefly pressing the accelerator pedal. Your responsibility Your actions have priority at all times.

Things to remember when driving Things to remember when driving Break-in period Moving parts need breaking-in time to adjust to each other. Please follow the instructions below in order to achieve the optimal service life and economy of operation for your vehicle. Engine and differential Always obey all official speed limits. Up to 1,200 miles/2,000 km Drive at varying engine and road speeds, but do not exceed an engine speed of 4500 rpm or a road speed of 100 mph/160 km/h.
Avoid high engine speeds Only use first gear when setting off. In second and higher gears, accelerate without hesitation or pauses. When accelerating, shift up before reaching high engine speeds. General driving notes Close the luggage compartment lid/ tailgate When you reach the desired speed, shift into the highest applicable gear and drive with the engine speed as low as possible and at a constant speed. Operate the vehicle only when the luggage compartment lid/tailgate and rear window are closed.
Things to remember when driving The risk of hydroplaning increases with declining tread depth on the tires, refer also to Minimum tread depth on page 218. Driving through water Drive through water on the road only if it is not deeper than 1 ft/30 cm, and then only at walking speed at the most. Otherwise, the vehicle's engine, the electrical systems and the transmission may be damaged.
To avoid loading the tires beyond their approved carrying capacity, never overload the vehicle. Overloading can lead to overheating and increases the rate at which damage develops inside the tires. This can ultimately result in a sudden blow-out.< Make sure that no liquids are spilled or leak from their containers in the cargo bay, as this could result in damage to the vehicle.< 6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, part of the load from your trailer will be transferred to your vehicle.
Things to remember when driving Sedan provided for attaching the cargo straps. Two are located on the cargo bay sidewalls 1, two more are on the rear cargo bay panel 2. Please comply with the information supplied with the cargo straps. Always position and secure the cargo as described above, so that it cannot endanger the car's occupants, for example if sudden braking or swerving is necessary.
At a glance approved gross vehicle weight or the axle loads when loading the rack. You can find the applicable data under Weights on page 245. Controls The roof load must be distributed uniformly and should not be too large in area. Heavy items should always be placed at the bottom. Be sure that adequate clearance is maintained for raising the glass roof, and that objects do not project into the opening path of the luggage compartment lid/tailgate.

Wheels and tires Wheels and tires Tire inflation pressures Information for your safety It is not merely the tires' service life, but also driving comfort and, to a great extent, driving safety that depend on the condition of the tires and the maintenance of the specified tire pressure. Check the tire inflation pressure regularly and correct it, if necessary: at least twice a month and before starting long trips.

Tread wear Traction AA A B C Temperature A B C Speed code letter The tread wear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one-half (1γ) times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100.
Wheels and tires heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corresponds to a level of performance which all passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109.
For information on continuing to drive with a flat tire, refer to Indication of a flat tire, page 90. New wheels and tires Have new wheels and tires installed only by your BMW center or tire shop that works according to BMW repair procedures with correspondingly trained personnel. If this work is not carried out properly, there is a danger of subsequent damage and related safety hazards. Make sure that the new wheels are balanced.
Wheels and tires Recommended tire brands Swapping wheels between axles BMW advises against swapping wheels between the front and rear axles, even if all tires have the same size, as this could impair driving characteristics. If the tires are of mixed sizes, swapping wheels between the axles is not permissible. Snow chains* Certain makes of tire are recommended by BMW for each tire size. They are marked with a clearly visible BMW designation on the sidewall of the tire.
