OBJECTIVE:
To use the throwing batons to first knock down the kubbs and knock down the King
last.
PLEASE READ this WARNING and all rules before playing.
WARNING: ADULT SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED TO PLAY THIS GAME. NOT
RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN UNDER 13 YEARS OF AGE. Only use the
product as directed and obey all of the safety rules noted below. Store the
product so that it is inaccessible and out of reach of young children. The
owner of the game is responsible for ensuring that the warnings and rules are
provided to all players. Mis-thrown batons or kubbs may cause property
damage. All players are responsible to ensure that Kubb is played safely.
PLEASE PLAY THE GAME CAREFULLY. ALWAYS ERR ON THE SIDE OF
SAFETY.
Preparing to Play:
1. Ensure that the playing field is flat and clear of all obstructions.
2. Ensure that there are no objects behind the target. If there is a wall behind
the target, ensure that the wall has no windows or that the wall is composed
of materials that could not be damaged by the throwing batons or kubbs.
3. The lines at either end of the court are called Baselines. The imaginary line
parallel with the baselines through the middle of the court will be referred to
as the Middle Line.
4. Place the king in the center of the playing field, with 5 Kubbs placed at
regular intervals along each baseline - one at either end, one in the middle
and two equal distance between the first three.
5. Kubbs in their starting position on the baseline are called “Baseline Kubbs”.
As part of the game, Kubbs are thrown into the middle of the playing field
and are erected where they end up. These Kubbs are then called "Field
Kubbs".
6. Kubb is played by one team against another. You can have as many as 6
players per team and as few as 1 player per team.
SAFETY RULES:
1. Always obey the safety rules.
2. Ensure that the playing field is clear of all obstructions.
3. All participants and non-participants (including pets) must stay behind and at a
safe distance from the playing field.
4. No person should be between a player and the target at any time.
5. KEEP AWAY FROM YOUNG CHILDREN.
6. All players and non-participants should always be attentive and observe the
game at ALL times in order to avoid injury caused by mis-thrown batons or
kubbs and other such hazards.
How to Play:
1. Before beginning to play Kubb read and obey the SAFETY RULES.
DO NOT CROSS THE PATH OF THE THROWING BATONS OR
KUBBS WHILE IN PLAY.
2. Batons must always be thrown vertically and underarm. Sideways throws are not
allowed! To decide which team starts, one person from each team throws a baton as
close to the king as possible without hitting it. The team with the baton closest to the
king starts. When throwing the batons at the Kubbs it must be thrown from behind the
throwing line which is behind the Field/Baseline Kubb closest to the opponent's side.
3. The Throwing Line is a line parallel with the baseline that passes through the nearest
Kubb to the Middle Line on the player's side. If there are no field Kubbs upright then
the nearest Kubb to the King is on the baseline and so the throwing line is the
baseline.
4. Players collect any Kubbs that were knocked over during the opponent's turn. These
Kubbs are then thrown from the baseline into the opponents half of the court. If a Kubb
comes to rest outside the opponent's half of the court, players have one more chance
to toss it onto the court. If a Kubb fails to land in the required area for a second time,
then the opponents can place the Kubb anywhere they want on their side of the court,
although it must be at least one baton length away from the King.
5. In doing this, players are usually aiming to make the Kubbs land just beyond the
middle line because the nearer the Kubbs are, the easier they are to topple in the next
phase of the turn.
6. The next step is to throw the batons at the opponents Field Kubbs first (the Kubbs that
are not on the baseline). Once the Field Kubbs have been knocked down the players
can toss the batons at the Baseline Kubbs. Players must throw from behind the
Throwing Line.
7. If a baseline Kubb is toppled before all the field Kubbs have been toppled, then the
baseline Kubb is immediately returned to an upright position. It’s important to note that
all Field Kubbs must be toppled first because otherwise, the opponents will be able to
throw from a much closer point (behind the nearest Field Kubb instead of the
Baseline) during their next turn. For that reason, a good strategy is to aim at the
nearest Kubbs first - so that if any Field Kubbs are not toppled, at least the opponents
will be as far away as possible.
8. If there are any batons left over once all the Kubbs (field and baseline) on the
opponents side have been toppled, then players may aim at the King. When throwing
at the King, players must throw from behind the baseline.
9. When the team has thrown its 6 batons, the turn passes back to the first team, and the
entire procedure is repeated.
