5.4 Record Data
The Record Data function records PIDs while vehicle is
parked or being driven. The Record Data function is
mainly used for diagnosing intermittent driveability
problems that cannot be isolated by any other method.
The recording time varies. A recording consists of frames
of data before the trigger and several frames after the
trigger.
CAUTION
Two people must be in vehicle when driv-
ing. One to drive and the other to operate
the scan tool.
From Heavy Duty Standard menu:
1. Select Record Data.
• Use the UP and DOWN keys until Record
Data is highlighted.
• Press .

2. A module menu is displayed.
• Use the UP and DOWN keys until the
designed choice is highlighted.
• Press .
• The menu is divided into two sections, a J1587
Module section and a J1939 Module section
depending on the modules supported (if avail-
able).
• The bottom line displays information for the
highlighted module: Protocol, module address
(Module Identifier=MID and Source Address =
SA) and full module description.

3. The Scan Tool identifies available data items (PIDs
or SPNs) to view. There are two identification meth-
ods:
• The quick method: The Scan Tool can take
approximately 15 seconds to identify available
PIDs/SPNs. It may not get every or any available
PIDs/SPNs.
• The long method: The Scan Tool could take up
to 2 minutes to identify available PIDs/SPNs.
This method is more thorough and will identify
more PIDs/SPNs to view.
If you are not prompted with the following screen, then
the Scan Tool has completed identifying all PIDs/SPNs
supported using the long method.
On the Screen below, select “No” to perform the quick
methor or select “Yes” to perform the long method.

4. Follow all instructions on display.
• The scan tool can maintain 5 recordings per
vehicle. If there are already 5 recordings stored,
the scan tool will ask which recording to over-
write.
• Scan tool validates PIDs from vehicle.
5. Refer to “5.3 View Data” on page 22 to
setup Custom List or View Entire List and Pre-Trig-
ger Setup to set the number of frames to keep prior
to triggering the recording.

6. Press to begin recording.
• Data continues to be saved until either:
– Record memory is full.
– Operator presses .
• Scan tool recording times vary. A recording
consists of frames of data before trigger and
several frames after trigger.
