to know about maintaining your cast iron
cooking grids.
YOU MUST SEASON CAST IRON COOKING GRIDS
Just like a cast iron frying pan, it is necessary to season and re-season cast iron
cooking grids. The oil will help protect the porcelain coating, prevent food from
sticking and protect the cooking grids from rusting.
FIRST TIME USE SEASONING YOUR CAST IRON COOKING GRIDS
Before you cook for the first time, you need to preheat your barbecue grill for 10
minutes on HIGH. This will burn off any residue from the manufacturing process.
Now, turn off your grill. When the cooking grids have cooled, you are ready to season
your new cooking grids.
A solid, unsalted vegetable shortening is
recommended for the initial seasoning.
Apply a thin coating over entire surface of
the cast iron grids and rub it in with a paper
towel. You can also melt the shortening in
the microwave and apply with a silicone
basting brush. If you don’t want to use
unsalted vegetable shortening, grape seed
or olive oil will work as well. As an option,
you can apply these oils with a Broil King
oil mister.
Broil Kings cast iron cooking grids are
two-sided so apply a generous coating of
oil to both sides. Make sure you cover the
entire surface of the grids including the
corners. DO NOT use salted fat such
as margarine or butter. Non-stick
cooking sprays are less effective as
they burn off at low heat.
Now that you have applied oil to your new
cast iron grids, preheat the barbecue grill
for 10 minutes on HIGH. Turn the control
knobs to MEDIUM and heat for 30 minutes
with the lid closed. The oil becomes baked-
on and creates a non-stick protective layer. Now turn the control knobs OFF. After the
cooking grids have cooled, your cast iron cooking grids are seasoned and ready to use.
