I. INTRODUCTION The Brookfield KU-1 and KU-1Q Viscometers measure fluid viscosity in Krebs Units. The digital display shows the viscosity reading in either Krebs units (KU) or the associated gram value. A paddle type spindle is driven at 200 rpm by a direct current motor. The current required to maintain 200 rpm is the measure of torque and is converted to viscosity in Krebs Units. The Viscometers will measure viscosity from 53 to 140 KU, at weights from 70 to 1,090 grams.
The KU-1Q Viscometer package includes: 1) KU-1Q Viscometer, upright rod and base 2) Paddle spindle 3) Operating instructions manual 4) U.S. pint can 5) U.S. pint and 1/2 pint can adapters The KU-1Q Viscometer is a variation of the KU-1 Viscometer which primarily measures in U.S. 1 quart cans rather than the U.S. 1 pint can used with the KU-1. The KU-1Q is supplied with two adapters which will allow measurements in U.S. 1 pint and U.S. 1/2 pint cans, as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
Please check to be sure that you have received all components, and that there is no damage. If you are missing any parts, please notify Brookfield or your local Brookfield agent immediately. Any shipping damage must be reported to the carrier. I.5 Set-Up 1) Insert the paddle spindle into the viscometer spindle adapter as far as it will go. Line up the “groove” on the spindle with the thumb wheel and tighten the thumb wheel (Figure 4). Spindle Adapter Thumb Wheel Paddle Spindle Figure 4: Attaching the Paddle Spindle 2) Be sure that the power switch is in the “off” position. Attach the power cord to the appropriate power source. II. OPERATION 1) Pour thoroughly mixed sample into the container to within 3/4 inch (20 mm) of the container top.
4) Turn on main power switch and select either Krebs Units (KU) or gram (gm) display. Be sure that the Hold Reading switch is in the up position (refer to Figure 6). 5) Allow ten minutes for the instrument to warm up before proceeding.
III. OPTIONS III.1 Air Purge The air purge option (Brookfield Part No. KU-1A) allows the interior of the KU-1or KU-1Q to be pressurized with air (or an inert gas) when the instrument is to be used in a hazardous environment (Figure 8). A built-in pressure switch turns the instrument off when the pressure drops below 2.0 PSI (falling). The switch comes on at 10.0 PSI (rising). Connect a regulated clean air supply which is non-corrosive to brass to the fitting shown in Figure 8.
III.2 Signal Output The signal output option includes parallel printer interface and analog voltage using a 25 pin, Type D (male) connector (Brookfield Part No.
Appendix A - KU-1 and KU-1Q Calibration Each KU-1 or KU-1Q Viscometer is supplied with a Certificate of Calibration. The viscometers are certified traceable to NIST calibration fluids which are available from Brookfield. The following fluids are recommended for use in performing a calibration check. NIST Viscosity Standard Viscosity (KU) T (°C) KU64 KU79 KU84 KU95 KU115 64 79 84 95 115 25 25 25 25 25 Select two of the above fluids to run a calibration test on your KU-1 or KU-1Q viscometer.
Appendix G - Warranty Repair and Service Warranty Brookfield Viscometers are guaranteed for one year from date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship. They are certified against primary viscosity standards traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The Viscometer must be returned to Brookfield Engineering Laboratories, Inc. or the Brookfield dealer from whom it was purchased for no charge warranty service. Transportation is at the purchaser’s expense.
