To prevent injuries, be careful not to put your fingers in the area shown in the illustrations. DO NOT use a vacuum cleaner to clean up scattered toner. Doing this might cause the toner dust to ignite inside the vacuum cleaner, potentially starting a fire. Please carefully clean the toner dust with a dry, lint-free cloth and dispose of it according to local regulations. When you move the machine, grasp the side hand holds that are under the scanner. DO NOT carry the machine by holding it at the bottom.
Safety and Legal CAUTION Lightning and power surges can damage this product! We recommend that you use a quality surge protection device on the AC power line or unplug the cord during a lightning storm.

C Troubleshooting and routine maintenance C Troubleshooting C IMPORTANT For technical help, you must call the country where you bought the machine. Calls must be made from within that country. If you are having difficulty with your machine C If you think there is a problem with the way your faxes look, make a copy first. If the copy looks good, the problem is probably not your machine. Check the chart below and follow the troubleshooting tips. You can solve most problems by yourself.
Printing Difficulties (Continued) Difficulties The machine prints unexpectedly or it prints garbage. Suggestions Turn off the machine’s power switch and then turn it on again. If the error message continues leave the machine for several minutes and then try it again. Check the settings in your application to make sure it is set up to work with your machine. If you are using the parallel port connection, check that the port is BRMFC and not LPT1.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance Software Difficulties (Continued) Difficulties Suggestions ‘Unable to write to LPT1’, ‘LPT1 already in use’ or ‘MFC is Busy’ error message appears. Make sure that the machine is on (plugged into the AC power outlet and the power switch turned on) and that it is connected directly to the computer using the IEEE-1284 bi-directional parallel cable. The cable must not go through another peripheral device (such as a Zip Drive, External CD-ROM Drive, or Switch box).
Print Quality Difficulties (Continued) Difficulties Printouts are too light. Suggestions If this problem occurs when making copies turn Toner Save mode to off in the machine menu setting. (See Toner save on page 19.) Set Toner Save mode to off in the Advanced tab in the printer driver. (See Advanced tab in the Software User’s Guide on the CD-ROM.) Network Difficulties (DCP–8065DN only) Difficulties Cannot print over a wired Network.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance Improving the print quality Examples of poor print quality ABCDEFGH CDEF abcdefghijk defg ABCD abcde 01234 Faint C Recommendation Check the machine’s environment. Conditions such as humidity, high temperatures, and so on, may cause this print fault. (See Choosing a location on page 38.) If the whole page is too light, Toner Save mode may be on. Turn off Toner Save mode in the machine’s menu settings or in the printer Properties of the driver.
Examples of poor print quality Recommendation Make sure that you use paper that meets our specifications. (See Acceptable paper and other media on page 11.) Choose Thick paper mode in the printer driver or in the machine’s Paper Type menu setting, or use thinner paper than you are currently using. (See Paper Type on page 17 and Basic tab in the Software User’s Guide on the CD-ROM.) Hollow print Check the machine’s environment. Conditions such as high humidity can cause hollow print.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance Examples of poor print quality ABCDEFGH abcdefghijk ABCD abcde 01234 White lines across the page Recommendation Make sure that you use paper that meets our specifications. A rough surfaced paper or thick print media can cause the problem. (See Acceptable paper and other media on page 11.) Make sure that you choose the proper media type in the printer driver or in the machine’s Paper Type menu setting.
Examples of poor print quality Recommendation Check the paper type and quality. High temperatures and high humidity will cause paper to curl. If you do not use the machine often, the paper may have been in the paper tray too long. Turn over the stack of paper in the paper tray. Also, fan the paper stack and then rotate the paper 180° in the paper tray. Curled or wave Make sure that paper is loaded properly.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance Error messages C As with any sophisticated office product, errors may occur. If this happens, your machine will identify the error and display an error message. The most common error messages are shown below. Error Message Cause Action Check Paper Size Paper is not the correct size. Load the correct size of paper and then set the Paper Size (Menu, 1, 2). (See Paper Size on page 17.
Error Message Cause Action Drum Near End The drum unit is near the end of its life. Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem; then replace the drum unit with a new one. See Replacing the drum unit (DR-520) on page 76 The drum counter was not reset when a new drum was installed. 1. Open the front cover, and then press Clear/Back. 2. Press 1 to reset.
