2 Install the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly e Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the printer until it clicks into place. IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the interface cable yet. f a b Close the front cover of the printer. Remove the packing tape from the outside of the printer. Press the front cover release button and open the front cover a. 11 c d Unpack the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
a 3 Load paper in the paper tray c Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds. Pull the paper tray completely out of the printer. d Put paper in the tray, and make sure that the paper is below the maximum paper mark a. The side to be printed on must be face down. 11 b While pressing the blue paper-guide release lever a, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you are loading in the tray. Make sure that the guides are firmly in the slots.
4 Print a test page d After the printer has finished warming up, the Status LED stops blinking and stays green. IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the interface cable yet. a b Make sure that the printer power switch is off. Connect the AC power cord to the printer. e Press Go. The printer prints a test page. Check that the test page has printed correctly. Turn on the printer power switch. Note This function will not be available after the first print job you send from your computer.

USB Windows® For USB Interface Cable Users 6 Install the printer driver and connect the printer to your computer d Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will appear automatically. Choose your printer model and the language. IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the USB interface cable yet. Note If the Brother screen does not appear automatically, go to My Computer (Computer), double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then double-click start.exe.
USB Note i When this screen appears, make sure the printer power switch is on. Connect the USB cable to the USB connector marked with a symbol, and then connect the cable to the computer. Click Next. g h When the License Agreement window appears, click Yes if you agree to the License Agreement. Remove the label covering the USB interface connector. 9 Macintosh USB • If you want to install the PS driver (Brother’s BR-Script Driver), choose Custom setup and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Note • If you want to register your product on-line, check On-Line Registration. • If you do not want to set your printer as Default printer, uncheck Set as Default Printer. • If you want to disable the Status Monitor, uncheck Enable Status Monitor. Finish The installation is now complete.
USB Macintosh For USB Interface Cable Users Remove the label covering the USB interface connector. Click Install Printer Driver on the menu screen. Connect the USB cable to the USB connector marked with a symbol, and then connect the cable to your Macintosh. g Click USB cable users and follow the on-screen instructions. Then, restart your Macintosh. IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the printer to a USB port on a keyboard or a non-powered USB hub. c d Note Make sure the printer power switch is on.
USB i j Choose the printer you wish to connect, and then click OK. When this screen appears, click OK. Finish 12 The installation is now complete.
Parallel Windows® For Parallel Interface Cable Users 6 Install the driver and connect the printer to your computer d Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Note i Connect the parallel interface cable to your computer, and then connect it to your printer. • For Windows Vista®, when the User Account Control screen appears, click Continue. • If you want to install the PS driver (Brother’s BR-Script Driver), choose Custom setup and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS (PostScript Emulation) Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions.

Or enter your printer's IP Address or its node name. Click Next. Note • For Windows Vista®, when the User Account Control screen appears, click Continue. Note • You can find your printer’s IP Address and the node name by printing out the Printer Settings Page. See Print the Printer Settings Page on page 43.
Wired Network k Windows® Click Finish. Note • If you want to register your product on-line, check On-Line Registration. • If you do not want to set your printer as Default printer, uncheck Set as Default Printer. • If you want to disable the Status Monitor, uncheck Enable Status Monitor. • If you disabled your Personal Firewall software (e.g. Windows® Firewall), turn it back on. Finish The installation is now complete.

Finish g Choose your printer's queue, and then click OK.
Wired Network Macintosh For Wired Network Interface Cable Users 6 a Connect the printer to your Macintosh and install the driver e Connect the network interface cable to the LAN connector marked with a symbol and then connect it to a free port on your hub. f b c Click Install Printer Driver on the menu screen. Click Network cable users and follow the on-screen instructions. Then, restart your Macintosh. Make sure the printer power switch is on. Turn on your Macintosh.
Wired Network h Macintosh Choose the printer you wish to connect, and then click OK. Note • If there is more than one of the same printer model connected on your network, the MAC Address (Ethernet Address) will be displayed after the model name. You can also confirm your IP Address by scrolling to the right. • You can find your printer’s MAC Address (Ethernet Address) and the IP Address by printing out the Printer Settings Page. See Print the Printer Settings Page on page 43.
For Wireless Network Users For Wireless Network Interface Users 6 Before you begin First you must configure the wireless network settings of your printer to communicate with your network access point/router. After the printer is configured to communicate with your access point/router computers on your network will have access to the printer. To use the printer from these computers, you will need to install the printer driver.
For Wireless Network Users 7 Confirm your network environment (Infrastructure Mode) Choose a configuration method and proceed to the page indicated. Configuration using the Brother installer application on the CD-ROM (Recommended) Configuration temporarily using a network cable You need to temporarily use an Ethernet cable when you configure your Brother printer with this method. The Ethernet cable is not a standard accessory.
Wireless Network Windows® Configuration in Infrastructure mode, using the Brother installer application 8 Configure the wireless settings You must know your wireless network settings before you proceed with this installation. Make sure you take notes on all the current settings such as SSID, authentication and encryption of your wireless network environment. If you do not know them, contact your network administrator or the manufacture of your access point/router.
Wireless Network f Note Windows® Choose Wireless Setup and Driver Install (Recommended), and then click Next. If the Brother screen does not appear automatically, go to My Computer (Computer), double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then double-click start.exe. d Click Install Printer Driver on the menu screen. Note Choose the Install Printer Driver icon for your region. e Click Wireless Network users. Note ® For Windows Vista , when the User Account Control screen appears, click Allow.
Wireless Network j Choose the printer you wish to configure, and click Next. If the list is blank, check if the access point and the printer are powered on, and then click Refresh. l If your network is not configured for Authentication and Encryption, the following screen will appear. To continue configuration, click OK and go to n. m Note • The default node name is “BRNxxxxxxxxxxxx”. • You can find your printer’s MAC Address (Ethernet Address) by printing out the Printer Settings Page.
Wireless Network n Click Next. The settings will be sent to your printer. The settings will remain unchanged if you click Cancel. The Network Configuration page will be printed. p q Windows® Click Finish. Wireless setup was unable to associate with a wireless network. This is probably due to incorrect security settings. Reset the network settings to the factory default (see page 43).
Wireless Network s Choose Standard Installation, and then click Next. Note If you want to install the PS driver (Brother’s BRScript Driver), choose Custom Installation and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS (PostScript Emulation) Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions. t Choose Search the network for devices and choose from a list of discovered devices (Recommended). Or enter your printer's IP Address or its node name.
Wireless Network Windows® Configuration using the automatic wireless (one-push) method 8 Configure the wireless settings If your wireless access point/router supports either SecureEasySetup™, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (PBC 1) or AOSS™, you can configure the printer easily without knowing your wireless network settings.Your Brother printer has one-push wireless setting mode.
Wireless Network e Click Wireless Network users. Note For Windows Vista®, when the User Account Control screen appears, click Allow. f g Choose Wireless Setup and Driver Install (Recommended), and then click Next. h i Windows® Confirm the on-screen message and click Next. Remove the label covering the USB interface connector to press the wireless setup button. j Press the wireless setup button located at the back of the printer for less than 2 seconds as shown in the illustration below.
Wireless Network l m Put your access point in the SecureEasySetup™ mode, the Wi-Fi Protected Setup mode or the AOSS™ mode, depending on what is supported by your access point. Please refer to the instruction manual that came with your access point. Wait until the Status LED of your printer indicates Connected. The Status LED will turn on for 5 minutes.
Wireless Network q Choose Standard Installation, and then click Next. Windows® Note If your printer takes a long time to appear on the list, 1 minute or more, then click Refresh. If your printer still fails to appear, reset the print server back to its default factory settings (see page 43) and go back to step e on page 30 and try the wireless setup again. t Click Finish.

If the list is blank, check if the access point and the printer are powered on, and then click Refresh.
Wireless Network k The wizard will search for wireless networks available from your printer. Choose the access point you wish to associate the printer with, and then click Next. m Macintosh If your network is configured for Authentication and Encryption, the following screen will appear. When configuring your Brother wireless printer, you must configure your printer to match the Authentication and Encryption settings you wrote down on page 33 for your existing wireless network.
Wireless Network n Click Next. The settings will be sent to your printer. The Network Configuration page will be printed. The settings will remain unchanged if you click Cancel. p q Macintosh Click Finish. Wireless setup failed as it was unable to associate with a wireless network. This is probably due to incorrect security settings. Reset the print server back to its factory default settings (see page 43).
Wireless Network s t Macintosh The Brother software will search for the Brother printer. During this time the following screen will appear. Choose the printer you wish to connect, and then click OK. Note • If there is more than one of the same printer model connected on your network, the MAC Address (Ethernet Address) will be displayed after the model name. You can also confirm your IP Address by scrolling to the right.

Wireless Network If the LED indicates Connection Error (See LED indications when using the one-push wireless setting mode on page 53), the printer has detected more than 2 access points/routers on your network that have the SecureEasySetup™, the Wi-Fi Protected Setup mode or the AOSS™ mode enabled. Make sure that only one access point/router has the SecureEasySetup™ mode, Wi-Fi Protected Setup mode or the AOSS™ mode enabled and try starting from j on page 39 again.
For Network Users BRAdmin Light utility (For Windows® users) The BRAdmin Light is a utility for initial setup of Brother network connected devices. It can also search for Brother products in a TCP/IP environment, view the status and configure basic network settings, such as IP Address. For more information on BRAdmin Light, visit us at http://solutions.brother.com/.
For Network Users BRAdmin Light utility (For Mac OS X users) The BRAdmin Light is a utility for initial setup of Brother network connected devices. It can also search for Brother products on your network, view the status and configure basic network settings, such as IP Address from a computer running Mac OS X 10.3.9 or greater. The BRAdmin Light software will be installed automatically when you install the printer driver. If you have already installed the printer driver, you don’t have to install it again.
For Network Users Web Based Management (web browser) Reset the network settings to the factory default The Brother print server is equipped with a web server that allows you to monitor its status or change some of its configuration settings, using HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol). To reset all network settings of the print server to its factory default, follow the steps below. Note • The login name for the Administrator is ‘admin’ (case sensitive) and the default password is ‘access’.
Other Information Safety precautions To use the printer safely If you DO NOT follow these safety instructions, there is a possibility of a fire, electrical shock, burn or suffocation. Please keep these instructions for later reference and read them before attempting any maintenance. WARNING There are high voltage electrodes inside the printer. Before you clean the inside of the printer, make sure that you have turned off the power switch and unplugged the printer from the AC power outlet.
