Quick Setup Guide Start Here MFC-253CW MFC-255CW MFC-257CW MFC-295CN Before you can use the machine, please read this Quick Setup Guide for the correct setup and installation. WARNING Warnings tell you what to do to prevent possible personal injury. CAUTION Cautions specify procedures you must follow or avoid to prevent possible minor injuries. a b c 2 Load plain A4 paper e Check that the paper is flat in the tray. IMPORTANT DO NOT push the paper in too far. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine. Lift the output paper tray cover. With both hands, gently press and slide the paper side guides a and then the paper length guide b to fit the paper size you are loading in the tray. Make sure that the triangular marks c on the paper side guides a and paper length guide b line up with the mark for the paper size you are using.
4 Connect the power cord and telephone line CAUTION IMPORTANT DO NOT connect the USB cable yet (if you are using a USB cable). a Connect the power cord. WARNING Install the ink cartridges If ink gets in your eyes, wash them out with water at once, and if irritation occurs consult a doctor. a b Make sure that the power is turned on. Open the ink cartridge cover. The machine must be fitted with an earthed plug. b c d e Remove the green protective part. Unpack the ink cartridge.

a b c d 8 9 Set the date and time Press Menu, 0, 2. Enter the last two digits of the year on the dial pad, and then press OK. Repeat for Month and Day, and Hours and Minutes in 24-hour format. Press Stop/Exit. Enter personal information (Station ID) You should store your name and fax number to be printed on all fax pages that you send. a b c d Press Menu, 0, 3. Enter your fax number (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press OK. To enter a “+” for international codes, press l.
10 a b c Press Menu, 0, 4. Press a or b to choose Pulse (or Tone). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. 11 a b c Set tone or pulse dialling mode Set the telephone line type Press Menu, 0, 6. Press a or b to choose Normal, PBX or ISDN. Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. 12 Set the phone line compatibility If you are connecting the machine to a VoIP service you need to change the compatibility setting. Note If you are just using a normal telephone line you can skip this step. a b Press Menu, 0, 7.

USB Macintosh For USB interface users (Mac OS X 10.3.9 - 10.4.x - 10.5.x) 14 a Before you install c Make sure your machine is connected to the power and your Macintosh is ON. You must be logged on with Administrator rights. 15 Connect the USB cable IMPORTANT IMPORTANT • DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a non-powered USB hub. • Connect the machine directly to your Macintosh. Make sure that the cable does not restrict the cover from closing, or an error may occur.

For Wireless Network Users For wireless network interface users (MFC-253CW/255CW/257CW only) 14 Before you begin IMPORTANT If you have previously configured the wireless settings of the machine you must reset the network (LAN) settings before you can configure the wireless settings again. On your machine, press Menu. Press 5 to choose 5.Network. Press 0 to choose 0.Network Reset. Press 1 twice to choose Reset and Yes.
For Wireless Network Users 15 Confirm your network environment (Infrastructure Mode) The following instructions will offer two methods for installing your Brother machine in a wireless network environment. Both methods are for infrastructure mode, using a wireless access point/router that uses DHCP to assign IP addresses. Choose a configuration method and proceed to the page indicated.
For Wireless Network Users Connecting the Brother machine to the wireless network 16 a b Configure the wireless settings (typical Wireless Setup in infrastructure mode) On your machine, press Menu. Press 5 to choose 5.Network. Press 2 to choose 2.Setup Wizard. When WLAN Enable ? is displayed, press 1 to accept. This will start the wireless setup wizard. To cancel, press Stop/Exit. The machine will search for available SSIDs.

For Network Users Restore the network settings to factory default To restore all network settings of the internal Print/Scan server to factory default, please follow the steps below. a b c d e Make sure the machine is not operating, then disconnect all the cables from the machine (except the power cord). Press Menu, 5, 0. Press 1 to choose 1.Reset. Press 1 to choose 1.Yes. The machine will restart, re-connect cables once this is complete.
Safety and Legal Choosing a location Put your machine on a flat, stable surface that is free of vibration and shocks, such as a desk. Put the machine near a telephone socket and a standard, grounded electrical socket. Choose a location where the temperature remains between 10°C and 35°C. WARNING • DO NOT put the machine near heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators, medical equipment, chemicals or water.
