1 General Setup Set tone or pulse dialling mode (not available in New Zealand) NOTE • This manual shows the LCD messages of the MFC-L9550CDW unless specified. • Most of the illustrations in this User’s Guide show the MFC-L8850CDW. Memory storage Your settings are stored permanently, and in the event of a power failure will not be lost. Temporary settings (for example, Contrast and Overseas Mode 1) will be lost.
Chapter 1 Set Daylight Saving Time You can set the machine to change for Daylight Saving Time. If you choose Forward Hour, it will reset the time forward one hour and if you choose Backward Hour, it will reset the time backward one hour. a Press b Press Time). c d Press Daylight Save. e Press 2 . General Setup Ecology features Toner Save You can save toner using this feature. When you set Toner Save to On, print appears lighter. The factory setting is Off. 1 1 Sleep Time 1 The Sleep Time setting can reduce power consumption. When the machine is in Sleep mode (Power Save mode) it acts as though it is turned off. The machine will wake up and start printing when it receives a print job. a Press b c Press All Settings.
Chapter 1 Deep Sleep mode 1 If the machine is in Sleep mode and does not receive any jobs for a certain length of time, the machine will go into Deep Sleep mode automatically. Deep Sleep mode uses less power than Sleep mode. The machine will wake up when it receives a job or if you press the Touchscreen. Quiet mode The Quiet mode setting can reduce noise while printing. When Quiet Mode is turned On, the print speed becomes slower. The default setting is Off.
General Setup Touchscreen Setting the backlight brightness You can adjust the brightness of the Touchscreen LCD backlight. Chapter 2 Before you begin to use Secure Function Lock 3.0 2 You can configure the Secure Function Lock settings using a web browser. Before configuration, the following preparations are needed. a b Start your web browser. Type “vmachine’s IP address/” into your browser’s address bar (where “machine’s IP address” is the IP address of the Brother machine). For example: v192.168.1.2/ NOTE You can find the machine’s IP address in the Network Configuration List (see Software and Network User's Guide).
Security features Configure Secure Function Lock 3.0 Using Web Based Management Set up groups with restrictions and users with a password and card ID (NFC ID) 1. You can set up to 100 restricted groups and 100 users. Configure these settings using a web browser. To set up the web page, see Before you begin to use Secure Function Lock 3.0 on page 8. Then follow these steps: 1 i (For MFC-L9550CDW) In the Card ID (NFC ID) box, type the card number (up to 16 characters.

Chapter 2 Active Directory Authentication Active Directory Authentication restricts the use of the Brother machine. If Active Directory Authentication is enabled, the machine's control panel will be locked. The machine's settings cannot be changed until the user enters the user ID, domain name and password.
Security features IPSec 2 Setting Lock 2 IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) is a security protocol that uses an optional Internet Protocol function to prevent manipulation and ensure the confidentiality of data transmitted as IP packets. IPsec encrypts data carried over the network, such as print jobs sent from computers to a printer. Because the data is encrypted at the network layer, applications that use a higher-level protocol use IPsec even if the user is not aware of its use.

Chapter 3 Changing a 2-sided fax layout (MFC-L8850CDW and MFC-L9550CDW) You must choose a 2-sided scanning format before you send a 2-sided fax. Sending a fax (MFC models only) Contrast 3 Changing Fax Resolution 3 For most documents the default setting of Auto will give the best results. Auto automatically chooses the appropriate contrast for your document. The quality of a fax can be improved by changing the Fax Resolution. This is a temporary setting that will only be active for your next fax. If your document is very light or very dark, changing the contrast may improve the quality of the fax.
Chapter 3 Additional sending operations Sending a fax manually Manual transmission Manual transmission lets you hear the dialling, ringing and fax-receiving tones while sending a fax. a b 3 3 You can dial a number and start scanning the fax into memory—even when the machine is sending from memory, receiving faxes or printing computer jobs. The Touchscreen displays the new job number. The number of pages you can scan into the memory will vary depending on the type of information that is printed on them.
Sending a fax (MFC models only) Broadcasting 3 How to broadcast a fax a b Broadcasting lets you send the same fax message to more than one fax number. You can include Groups, Address Book numbers and up to 50 manually dialled numbers in the same broadcast. Load your document. Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off, press You can broadcast up to 350 different numbers. Before you begin the broadcast 3 (Fax). When Fax Preview is set to On, press (Fax) and Sending Faxes.

After the broadcast is finished, the machine will print a broadcast report to let you know the results. NOTE Cancelling a Broadcast in progress 3 While broadcasting you can cancel the fax currently being sent or the whole broadcast job. a Press b Do one of the following: . • If you did not use up any of the numbers for Groups, you can broadcast faxes to as many as 350 different numbers.
Sending a fax (MFC models only) Real Time Transmission When you are sending a fax, the machine will scan the document into the memory before sending it. As soon as the telephone line is free, the machine will start dialling and sending. Sometimes, you may want to send an important document immediately without waiting for memory transmission. You can turn on Real Time TX. 3 Overseas Mode If you are having difficulty sending a fax overseas due to a bad connection, then turning on Overseas Mode may help.
Chapter 3 Delayed Fax 3 You can store up to 50 faxes in the memory to be sent within a 24-hour period. a b Load your document. Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off, press (Fax). Chapter 3 Restoring all fax settings to the factory settings 3 You can restore all the fax settings you have changed to the factory settings. Your cover page includes your Station ID, a comment, and the name stored in the Address Book. You can retrieve stored fax messages from a fax machine at another location using the remote retrieval commands (see Retrieving fax messages on page 35). To make your code inactive, press and hold at step g to restore the default setting – – –l, and then press OK. You can call your machine from any touchtone phone or fax machine and then use the remote access code and remote commands to retrieve fax messages.
Chapter 4 Remote fax commands 4 Follow the commands in the table to access features when you are away from the machine. When you call the machine and enter your remote access code (3 digits followed by l), the system will give two short beeps and you must enter a remote command. Remote commands 95 Change the Fax Forwarding or Fax Storage Settings 1 OFF You can choose Off after you have retrieved or erased all your messages. 2 Fax Forwarding One long beep means the change is accepted.

Rates may vary depending on the time and destination. To take advantage of low rates, you can store the access codes of longdistance carriers and credit card numbers as Address Book numbers.

The machine will print the report at the chosen time and then erase all jobs from its memory.
Printing reports Reports 6 The following reports are available: 1 XMIT Verify (MFC models only) Displays the Transmission Verification Report for your last outgoing 200 faxes and prints the last report. 7 Making copies Copy settings 7 7 Improving copy quality You can choose from a range of quality settings. The factory setting is Auto. You can change the copy settings for the next copy. Auto These settings are temporary. The machine returns to its default settings one minute after copying. Auto is the recommended mode for ordinary printouts. Appropriate for documents that contain both text and photographs. Press Copy and then press Options.

The layout of your document determines which 2-sided copy layout you should choose. (MFC-L8650CDW, MFC-L8850CDW, MFC-L9550CDW and DCP-L8450CDW) If you want to use the automatic 2-sided copy feature, load your document in the ADF.

Chapter 7 Making N in 1 copies (page layout) If you are using the scanner glass, go to step k. 7 You can reduce the amount of paper used when copying by using the N in 1 copy feature. This allows you to copy two or four pages onto one page. If you want to copy both sides of an ID card onto one page, see 2 in 1 ID Copy on page 52. k After the machine scans the page, press Yes to scan the next page. l Place the next page on the scanner glass. m Press OK.

NOTE You can copy an identification card to the extent permitted under applicable laws (see Product Safety Guide). a Place your identification card face down near the left corner of the scanner glass. 1 1 4 mm or greater (top, left) Even if a document is placed on the ADF, the machine scans from the scanner glass when in this mode.

Removing Background Colour f Select 2in1(P), 2in1(L), 4in1(P) or 4in1(L) in Page Layout (see Making N in 1 copies (page layout) on page 50). Remove Background Colour removes the background colour of the document when copying. Routine maintenance Replacing periodic maintenance parts A The periodic maintenance parts must be replaced regularly to maintain the print quality. The parts listed in the table must be replaced after printing approximately 50,000 pages 1 for PF Kit MP and 100,000 pages 1 for PF Kit 1, PF Kit 2 2, Fuser and Laser. Contact Brother customer service when these messages appear on the Touchscreen. Touchscreen message Description Replace Fuser Replace the fuser unit. Replace Laser Replace the laser unit.
Packing and shipping the machine WARNING This machine is heavy and weighs more than 29.0 kg. To prevent possible injuries, at least two people should lift the machine. One person should hold the front of the machine, and one person should hold the back, as shown in the illustration. Be careful not to trap your fingers when you put the machine down. a Press and hold down to turn off the machine. Leave the machine turned off for at least 10 minutes to cool down.
Routine maintenance d Wrap the machine in a plastic bag, then place it on the bottom packing material (1). e Place the packing material (2) marked “RIGHT” on the right of the machine. Place the packing material (3) marked “LEFT” on the left of the machine. Place the AC power cord and printed materials in the original carton as shown in the illustration. Optional paper tray (For DCP-L8400CDN, DCP-L8450CDW, MFC-L8600CDW, MFC-L8650CDW and MFC-L8850CDW (LT-320CL)) (For MFC-L9550CDW (LT-325CL)) Memory board Your machine has 256 MB of standard memory and one slot for optional memory expansion. You can increase the memory up to maximum of 512 MB by installing one SODIMM (Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module).

Unplug the telephone line cord. b Disconnect the interface cable from the machine, and then unplug the power cord from the AC power outlet. B e Hold the SO-DIMM by the edges and align the notches in the SO-DIMM with the protrusions in the slot. Insert the SODIMM diagonally (1), then tilt it toward the interface board until it locks into place (2).
g Plug the machine’s power cord back into the AC power outlet first, and then connect the interface cable. h Plug in the telephone line cord. Turn on the machine’s power switch. NOTE To make sure that you have installed the SO-DIMM correctly, you can print the User Settings List that shows the current RAM SIZE, (see How to print a report on page 43.

Address Book Names and numbers you have stored for easy dialling. Cancel Job Cancels a programmed print job and clears it from the machine’s memory. Address Book List A listing of names and numbers stored in the Address Book memory, in alphabetical order.
Density Changing the Density makes the whole image lighter or darker. Fax Forwarding Sends a fax received into the memory to another pre-programmed fax number. Distinctive Ring A subscriber service purchased from the telephone company that gives you another telephone number on an existing telephone line. The Brother machine uses the new number to simulate a dedicated fax line. Fax Journal Lists information about the last 200 incoming and outgoing faxes. TX means Transmit. RX means Receive.
Glossary Out of Paper Reception Receives faxes into the machine’s memory when the machine is out of paper. Resolution The number of vertical and horizontal lines per inch. Overseas Mode Makes temporary changes to the fax tones to accommodate noise and static on overseas telephone lines. Ring Delay The number of rings before the machine answers in Fax and Fax/Tel modes. Pause Allows you to place a 3.
Transmission The process of sending faxes over the telephone lines from your machine to the receiving fax machine. User Settings List A printed report that shows the current settings of the machine. Xmit Report (Transmission Verification Report) A listing for each transmission, that shows its date, time and number.
