1 General Setup Set tone or pulse dialing mode (Canada only) NOTE • This manual shows the LCD messages of the MFC-L9550CDW unless specified. • Most of the illustrations in this User’s Guide show the MFC-L8850CDW. Memory storage Your settings are stored permanently, and in the event of a power failure will not be lost. Temporary settings (for example, Contrast and Overseas Mode) will be lost.

Chapter 1 Set the Time Zone You can set the time zone on the machine for your location. Press OK. . 1 Ecology features Toner Save You can save toner using this feature. When you set Toner Save to On, print appears lighter. The factory setting is Off.
General Setup Sleep Time 1 The Sleep Time setting can reduce power consumption. When the machine is in Sleep mode (Power Save mode) it acts as though it is turned off. The machine will wake up and start printing when it receives a print job. You can choose how long the machine must be idle before it goes into Sleep mode. The timer will restart if any operation is carried out on the machine, such as receiving a fax or a print job. The factory setting is three minutes.
Chapter 1 Quiet mode feature Quiet mode The Quiet mode setting can reduce noise while printing. When Quiet Mode is turned On, the print speed becomes slower. The default setting is Off. a Press b c Press All Settings. d e 1 Touchscreen Setting the backlight brightness You can adjust the brightness of the Touchscreen LCD backlight. If you are having difficulty reading the Touchscreen, try changing the brightness setting. . Swipe up or down, or press a or b to display General Setup.
General Setup Setting the Dim Timer for the backlight You can set how long the Touchscreen LCD backlight stays on after you go back to your Home screen. Dial Prefix The Dial Prefix setting will automatically dial a predefined number before every fax number you dial. For example: If your telephone system requires a 9 to dial an outside number, use this setting to automatically dial 9 for every fax you send. Press b c Press All Settings.

2 Security features Secure Function Lock 3.0 2 NOTE • Secure Function Lock can be set by using Web Based Management or BRAdmin Professional 3 (Windows® only). 2 Secure Function Lock lets you restrict Public access to the following machine operations: • Only administrators can set limitations and make changes for each user.
Chapter 2 Before you begin to use Secure Function Lock 3.0 2 You can configure the Secure Function Lock settings using a web browser. Before configuration, the following preparations are needed. a b Start your web browser. Type “vmachine’s IP address/” into your browser’s address bar (where “machine’s IP address” is the IP address of the Brother machine). For example: v192.168.1.2/ NOTE You can find the machine’s IP address in the Network Configuration List (see Software and Network User's Guide).
Security features Configure Secure Function Lock 3.0 Using Web Based Management Set up groups with restrictions and users with a password and card ID (NFC ID) 1. You can set up to 100 restricted groups and 100 users. Configure these settings using a web browser. To set up the web page, see Before you begin to use Secure Function Lock 3.0 on page 10. Then follow these steps: 1 i (For MFC-L9550CDW) In the Card ID (NFC ID) box, type the card number (up to 16 characters.
Chapter 2 Setting up the card authentication users (For MFC-L9550CDW) Setting up and changing the Public user mode 2 Before setting up the card authentication users, you must set up restricted operations and a user list using the web browser. Chapter 2 Active Directory Authentication Active Directory Authentication restricts the use of the Brother machine. If Active Directory Authentication is enabled, the machine's control panel will be locked. The machine's settings cannot be changed until the user enters the user ID, domain name and password.
Security features IPSec 2 Setting Lock 2 IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) is a security protocol that uses an optional Internet Protocol function to prevent manipulation and ensure the confidentiality of data transmitted as IP packets. IPsec encrypts data carried over the network, such as print jobs sent from computers to a printer. Because the data is encrypted at the network layer, applications that use a higher-level protocol use IPsec even if the user is not aware of its use.

Chapter 3 Changing a 2-sided fax layout (MFC-L8850CDW and MFC-L9550CDW) You must choose the 2-sided scanning format before you send a 2-sided fax. The format you choose will depend on the layout of your 2-sided document. a b Load your document in the ADF. Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off, press (Fax). Sending a fax Contrast 3 Changing Fax Resolution 3 For most documents the default setting of Auto will give the best results. Auto automatically chooses the appropriate contrast for your document. The quality of a fax can be improved by changing the Fax Resolution. This is a temporary setting that will only be active for your next fax. If your document is very light or very dark, changing the contrast may improve the quality of the fax.
Chapter 3 Additional sending operations Sending a fax manually Manual transmission Manual transmission lets you hear the dialing, ringing and fax-receiving tones while sending a fax. a b Load your document. press (Fax). When Fax Preview is set to On, press (Fax) and Sending Fax(es). Press Hook and listen for a dial tone. Dial the fax number. When you hear the fax tones, press Fax Start. If you are using the scanner glass, press Send.
Sending a fax Dual access 3 Broadcasting 3 You can dial a number and start scanning the fax into memory—even when the machine is sending from memory, receiving faxes or printing computer jobs. The Touchscreen displays the new job number. Broadcasting lets you send the same fax message to more than one fax number. You can include Groups, Address Book numbers and up to 50 manually dialed numbers in the same broadcast.

NOTE If you downloaded Internet Fax: If you want to broadcast using an E-mail address, press , enter the E-mail address (see Basic User's Guide), and press OK. g You can add numbers to the broadcast in the following ways: Press Add Number and enter a number using the Touchscreen's keyboard (see Basic User's Guide). Sending a fax Real Time Transmission When you are sending a fax, the machine will scan the document into the memory before sending it. As soon as the telephone line is free, the machine will start dialing and sending. Sometimes, you may want to send an important document immediately without waiting for memory transmission. You can turn on Real Time TX. 3 Overseas Mode If you are having difficulty sending a fax overseas due to a bad connection, then turning on Overseas Mode may help.
Chapter 3 Delayed Fax 3 You can store up to 50 faxes in the memory to be sent within a 24-hour period. a b Load your document. Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off, press (Fax). Sending a fax Checking and canceling waiting jobs Check which jobs are still waiting in the memory to be sent. If there are no jobs, the Touchscreen displays No Jobs Waiting. You can cancel a fax job that is stored and waiting in the memory. a Press b c Press All Settings. . Press Fax. f Press Remaining Jobs. Jobs that are waiting will appear on the Touchscreen. g Swipe up or down, or press a or b to scroll through the waiting jobs and press the job you want to cancel. h i Press Cancel.
Chapter 3 Restoring all fax settings to the factory settings Saving fax options as a Shortcut 3 3 You can restore all the fax settings you have changed to the factory settings. These settings will stay until you change them again. a You can store all the new fax options you use frequently by saving them as a Shortcut. a When Fax Preview is set to Off, Do one of the following: press When Fax Preview is set to Off, press (Fax) and Sending When Fax Preview is set to On, press Fax(es).
Sending a fax Electronic cover page This feature will not work unless you have programmed your Station ID (see Basic User's Guide). 3 Composing your own comments You can set up two comments of your own. a Press b c Press All Settings. d e Press Fax. Chapter 3 Send a cover page for the next fax If you want to send a cover page for the next fax, you can add the cover page. a Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off, press (Fax). Sending a fax Destination Display 3 When you send a fax, the machine displays the information from the Address Book or the number you dialed. 4 Receiving a fax Memory Receive Options 4 j Do one of the following: Press Manual to enter the forwarding fax number (up to 20 characters) using the Touchscreen's keyboard (see Basic User's Guide). 4 Memory Receive lets you receive faxes while you are away from the machine. Press OK. You can use only one Memory Receive option at a time: Press Address Book. Swipe up or down, or press a or b to scroll until you find the fax number where you want your faxes forwarded.
Receiving a fax Paging 4 k If you are programming a cell phone number, press OK. When Paging is chosen, the machine dials the cell phone or pager number you programmed. This activates your cell phone or pager so you will know there is a fax message in the machine’s memory. If your pager needs a PIN, enter the PIN, press #, press Pause, enter your fax number followed by ##. Press OK.
Chapter 4 Fax Storage The Fax Storage feature lets you store your received faxes in the machine’s memory. You can retrieve stored fax messages from a fax machine at another location using the remote retrieval commands (see Retrieving fax messages on page 38). Chapter 4 Remote retrieval 4 You can change your code at any time. To make your code inactive, press and hold at step g to restore the inactive setting – – –l, and then press OK. You can call your machine from any touchtone telephone or fax machine and then use the remote access code and remote commands to retrieve fax messages. Setting a Remote Access Code NOTE Using your Remote Access Code 4 The Remote Access Code lets you access the remote retrieval features when you are away from your machine.
Receiving a fax Remote fax commands 4 Follow the commands in the table to access features when you are away from the machine. When you call the machine and enter your remote access code (3 digits followed by l), the system will give two short beeps and you must enter a remote command. Remote commands 95 Change the Fax Forwarding, Paging or Fax Storage settings 1 OFF You can choose Off after you retrieve or erase all your messages. 2 Fax Forwarding One long beep means the change is accepted.
Chapter 4 Retrieving fax messages You can call your machine from any touchtone telephone or fax machine and have your fax messages sent to another machine. Before you use this feature, you have to turn on Fax Storage or Fax Preview (see Fax Storage on page 34 or Basic User's Guide). a b c d You can change your fax forwarding number from another touch-tone telephone or fax machine. Receiving a fax Additional receiving operations Printing a reduced incoming fax If you choose On, the machine reduces each page of an incoming fax to fit on one page of Letter, A4, Legal or Folio sized paper. 2-sided printing for Fax mode 4 4 Your machine prints received faxes on both sides of the paper when 2-sided is set to On. Use Letter, Legal or Folio (8.5 in. 13 in.) sized paper for this setting [16 to 28 lb (60 to 105 g/m2)]. a Press b c Press All Settings. d e Press Fax.

Receiving a fax Printing a fax from the memory 4 Receiving faxes into memory when the paper tray is empty If you choose Paging or Fax Storage, you can still print a fax from the memory when you are at your machine (see Fax Storage on page 34). As soon as the paper tray becomes displays during fax reception, the Touchscreen displays No Paper and begins receiving faxes into the machine’s memory. Load paper in the paper tray (see Basic User's Guide). a Press b c Press All Settings.

Dialing and storing numbers Converting telephone wall outlets 5 There are three ways to convert to an RJ11 jack. The first two ways may require assistance from the telephone company. You can change the wall outlets from one RJ14 jack to two RJ11 jacks. Or, you can have an RJ11 wall outlet installed and slave or jump one of the telephone numbers to it. The third way is the easiest: Buy a triplex adapter. You can plug a triplex adapter into an RJ14 outlet.
Chapter 5 Additional dialing operations Dialing access codes and credit card numbers 5 5 Sometimes you may want to choose from several long-distance carriers when you send a fax. Rates may vary depending on the time and destination. To take advantage of low rates, you can store the access codes of longdistance carriers and credit card numbers as Address Book numbers. You can store these long dialing sequences by dividing them and setting them up as separate Address Book numbers in any combination.

Setting up Groups for Broadcasting 5 5 5 A Group, which can be stored in the Address Book, allows you to send the same fax message to many fax numbers by pressing Fax, Address Book, Group name, Apply and Fax Start.

6 Printing reports Fax reports Press i 6 on the Touchscreen to set up the The machine will print the report at the chosen time and then erase all jobs from its memory. If the machine’s memory becomes full with 200 jobs before the time you chose has passed, the machine will print the Journal early and then erase all jobs from the memory. If you want an extra report before it is due to print, you can print it without erasing the jobs from the memory.

7 Making copies Copy settings 7 7 Improving copy quality You can choose from a range of quality settings. The factory setting is Auto. You can change the copy settings for the next copy. Auto These settings are temporary. The machine returns to its default settings one minute after copying. Auto is the recommended mode for ordinary printouts. Appropriate for documents that contain both text and photographs. Press Copy and then press Options.

The layout of your document determines which 2-sided copy layout you should choose. Sorting copies You can sort multiple copies. Pages will be sorted in the order 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3, and so on.
Making copies Making N in 1 copies (page layout) If you are using the scanner glass, go to step k. 7 You can reduce the amount of paper used when copying by using the N in 1 copy feature. This allows you to copy two or four pages onto one page. If you want to copy both sides of an ID card onto one page, see 2 in 1 ID Copy on page 59. k After the machine scans the page, press Yes to scan the next page. l Place the next page on the scanner glass. m Press OK.

The machine starts scanning one side of the identification card. k After the machine has scanned one side, press Yes.

When you make 2-sided N in 1 copies from a 2-sided document, you must choose a layout option in 2-sided Copy Page Layout. You will be able to access 2-sided Copy Page Layout after selecting 2-sided2-sided for 2-sided Copy and any N in 1 layout for Page Layout. Press Options.

A Routine maintenance Cleaning and checking the machine Clean the outside and inside of the machine regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When you replace the toner cartridge or the drum unit, make sure you clean the inside of the machine. If printed pages are stained with toner, clean the inside of the machine with a dry, lint-free cloth. A IMPORTANT A • Use neutral detergents. Cleaning with volatile liquids such as thinner or benzine will damage the surface of the machine.
Cleaning the outside of the machine b Wipe the outside of the machine with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust. c Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine. d If paper is loaded in the paper tray, remove it. e Remove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray. A IMPORTANT DO NOT use any type of liquid cleaners (including ethanol). Clean the Touchscreen as follows: a Press and hold down machine. b Clean the Touchscreen with a dry, soft lint-free cloth.

Cleaning the scanner A a Press and hold down machine. b (MFC-L8850CDW and MFC-L9550CDW) to turn off the Unfold the ADF document support (1) and then open the ADF cover (2). Clean the white bar (3) and the scanner glass strip (4) underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water. Close the ADF cover (2) and fold the ADF document support (1).

d Turn the blue lock lever (1) at the left of the machine counterclockwise to the release position. Holding the blue handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit and remove it from the machine. • We recommend that you place the drum unit on a clean, flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. • To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.

Make sure the blue lock lever (1) is in the release position as shown in the illustration.

Cleaning the corona wires If you have print quality problems or the Touchscreen displays Drum !, clean the corona wires as follows: j k 70 Close the front cover of the machine. Turn on the machine’s power switch. a Make sure that the machine is turned on. b Press the front cover release button and pull open the front cover.
Routine maintenance c Hold the blue handle of the drum unit. Pull the drum unit out until it stops. d Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and gently push it toward the machine to unlock it. Then pull it out of the drum unit. Repeat this for all the toner cartridges. IMPORTANT • We recommend that you place the toner cartridges on a clean, flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. • Handle the toner cartridge carefully.
e Clean the corona wires inside the drum by gently sliding the blue tabs from left to right and right to left several times. IMPORTANT Be sure to return the tab to the home position (1). If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe. NOTE We recommend that you clean the corona wire for each color. If you want to clean only the corona wire of the color that caused the print quality problem, see the illustration below to identify the position of each of the corona wires.
Routine maintenance f Repeat steps e to clean each of three remaining corona wires. g Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slide the toner cartridge into the drum unit, then gently pull it toward you until you hear it lock into place. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum unit. Repeat this for all the toner cartridges. h Push the drum unit in until it stops. Cleaning the drum unit A If your printout has black or white dots or other repeating marks at 3.7 in. (94 mm) intervals, the drum may have foreign material, such as glue from a label, stuck on the drum surface. Follow these steps to solve the problem: a Make sure the machine is in the Ready mode. b Press c d Press All Settings. e f Press Print Reports. g h Press Drum Dot Print. i The machine will print the Drum Dot . Swipe up or down, or press a or b to display Print Reports.

Dot color problem: The color of printed dots is the color of the drum you should clean.
q Use the numbered markers next to the drum roller to find the mark. For example, a cyan dot in column 2 on the check sheet would mean that there is a mark in the “2” region of the cyan drum. r Identify the drum indicated by the colored dot in step q. Hold the drum unit frame with both hands, place your left thumb on the drum unit gear, and roll the drum toward you, as illustrated in the drawing below. Look in the numbered area identified in step q for any marks or scratches.
Routine maintenance s When you have found the mark on the drum that matches the drum dot check sheet, wipe the surface of the drum gently with a cotton swab until the mark on the surface comes off. t Turn the drum unit over by holding the blue handles. u Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slide the toner cartridge into the drum unit, then gently pull it toward you until you hear it locks into place. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum unit.

Routine maintenance Cleaning the paper pick-up rollers e A Cleaning the paper pick-up roller periodically may prevent paper jams by insuring the proper feeding of paper. Tightly wring out a lint-free cloth soaked in lukewarm water, and then wipe the separator pad (1) on the paper tray to remove dust. 1 If you have paper feed problems, clean the pick-up rollers as follows: a Press and hold down machine. b Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.
Calibration A The output density for each color may vary depending on the machine’s environment, such as temperature and humidity. Replacing periodic maintenance parts A The periodic maintenance parts must be replaced regularly to maintain the print quality. The parts listed in the table must be replaced after printing approximately 50,000 pages 1 for PF Kit MP and 100,000 pages 1 for PF Kit 1, PF Kit 2 2, Fuser and Laser. Routine maintenance Packing and shipping the machine WARNING This machine is heavy and weighs more than 63.5 lb (28.8 kg). To prevent possible injuries, at least two people should lift the machine. One person should hold the front of the machine, and one person should hold the back, as shown in the illustration. Be careful not to trap your fingers when you put the machine down. a Press and hold down to turn off the machine. Leave the machine turned off for at least 10 minutes to cool down.
d Wrap the machine in a plastic bag, then place it on the bottom packing material (1). e Place the packing material (2) marked “RIGHT” on the right of the machine. Options Optional paper tray (For MFC-L8600CDW and MFC-L8850CDW (LT-320CL)) (For MFC-L9550CDW (LT-325CL)) An optional lower tray can be installed on the MFC-L8600CDW, MFC-L8850CDW and MFC-L9550CDW, and it can hold up to 500 sheets of 20 lb (80 g/m2) paper. When an optional tray is installed, the machine can hold up to 800 sheets of plain paper. For setup, see the instructions that we have supplied with the lower tray unit. WARNING If you use a Lower Tray, DO NOT carry the machine with the Lower Tray.
Installing extra memory a Turn off the machine’s power switch. Unplug the telephone line cord. b Disconnect the interface cable from the machine, and then unplug the power cord from the AC power outlet. B e Hold the SO-DIMM by the edges and align the notches in the SO-DIMM with the protrusions in the slot. Insert the SODIMM diagonally (1), then tilt it toward the interface board until it locks into place (2).
Options g Plug the machine’s power cord back into the AC power outlet first, and then connect the interface cable. h Plug in the telephone line cord. Turn on the machine’s power switch. NOTE To make sure that you have installed the SO-DIMM correctly, you can print the User Settings List that shows the current RAM SIZE, (see How to print a report on page 50.

Dual Access Your machine can scan outgoing faxes or scheduled jobs into memory at the same time it is sending a fax or receiving or printing an incoming fax.
